I chose this photo because looking at this mural made me truly feel the weight of being a global citizen. This photo was taken on a tour of Brixton in London, an area of the city that is incredibility diverse with its own unique influences and history. I loved this painting because it blended together different perspectives on the same issue in a way that I had never seen. The mural depicts Death reigning over a city as American and English politicians hide in a bunker. Inspired by the Cold War it was able to portray that for all of the grande scheming that takes place far away it is neighborhoods and areas like Brixton that suffer. For the nine students who made the 21-day trip in January 2017, the scarcity and simplicity of life in Cuba – from the 1950s cars to the empty supermarket shelves to the limited Internet service - challenged every convention of their lives back home.
The study abroad trip combined two classes: Journeys through Latin America: Contemporary Cuba, taught by Murillo, and Health, Culture and Elder Care in Cuba, taught by Kirby Veevers, an adjunct professor of Health Professions who specializes in palliative care, aging and long-term care.
