"Mulholland Drive" Session

Über das Album „Kind Of Blue“, das das Sextett von Miles Davis an zwei Tagen im März und April 1959 eingespielt hatte, ist viel geschrieben und gesagt worden. Dass zum Beispiel der Trompeter begonnen hatte, mit einem im Jazz dieser Zeit neuen harmonischen Konzept zu experimentieren: mit den Kirchentonarten, wie sie in der polyphonen Vokalmusik des Mittelalters üblich sind. Oder dass Davis die verhangene Atmosphäre der modalen Jazzmusik von „Kind Of Blue“ seinem Pianisten Bill Evans regelrecht auf den Leib „konzipiert“ hatte. Oder dass John Coltrane und Julian „Cannonball“ Adderley die geheimnisvolle Stimmung kontrastierten: mit der bluesig geerdeten Exaltiertheit des Altsaxofonisten einerseits und der expressiv im Geschwindigkeitsrausch vorgetragenen Exegese des Tenorsaxofonisten andererseits.
Dabei wird oftmals die Bedeutung des „Kind Of Blue“-Schlagzeugers Jimmy Cobb überlesen. Wie ökonomisch Cobb spielt, um mit wenigen Mitteln den größtmöglichen Ausdruck erzeugen zu können. Wie er beispielsweise nach dem Bass-Riff-Thema von „So What“ mit zwei, drei Schlägen auf die Tomtoms seines Drumsets in den Chorus von Davis überleitet oder das Trompetensolo nur deshalb einen völlig neuen Charakter bekommt, weil er vom Ride- auf das Crashbecken wechselt. Und auch wenn man meint, die „Skipnote“ in dem „Ting-ting-te-ting“ auf dem Becken zu hören, so schlägt Cobb ausschließlich die Viertel durch. Dadurch swingt er gleichermaßen subtil wie offensiv – und kann rhythmisch mit größter Flexibilität auf die improvisatorischen Eingebungen seiner Bandkollegen reagieren.
Cobb selbst urteilt über „Kind Of Blue“ recht pragmatisch: „Miles hat immer gute Platten eingespielt und ,Kind Of Blue‘ war eine Studiosession wie jede andere. Niemand von uns ahnte, dass es je ein so legendäres Album werden würde. Aber das weiß man doch nie, oder? Wenn Miles das damals schon gewusst hätte, dann hätte er sicherlich viel mehr Honorar eingefordert“, erzählte er Arne Reimer, als der ihn vor einigen Jahren für den ersten Band von „American Jazz Heroes“ in New York besuchte und sprach.
Vor 60 Jahren war Cobb, 1929 in Washington geboren, vor allem mit der „anderen“ Rhythmusgruppe der Davis-Band mit dem Pianisten Wynton Kelly und dem Bassisten Paul Chambers berühmt. Als zum Beispiel Wes Montgomery 1962 ein Konzert im Tsubo’s im kalifornischen Berkeley spielen wollte, „lieh“ sich der Gitarrist diese Davis-Rhythmusgruppe einfach aus, mit der der Trompeter zur gleichen Zeit einen Auftritt im nahen San Francisco hatte. Das dabei entstandene „Full House“ ist nicht nur das einzige, zu Lebzeiten Montgomerys erschienene Live-Album, sondern auch ein erstes Highlight in der kurzen Karriere dieses legendären Gitarristen. Als Drummer nahm Cobb mit dem Kelly-Trio in den 1960ern insgesamt acht Platten auf, zudem arbeitete er für Coltrane und spielte oft in den Bands von Julian und Nat Adderley. Als Leader eigener Bands trat der Schlagzeuger recht spät in Erscheinung. Und obwohl er von der amerikanischen Stiftung „National Endowment For The Arts“ 2009 zum „NEA Jazz Master“ ernannt wurde, verdiente er sich seinen Lebensunterhalt zumeist mit Konzerttourneen außerhalb seiner Heimat USA.
Im vergangenen Jahre wurde bei Cobb Lungenkrebs diagnostiziert. Rasch waren die finanziellen Rücklagen des damals 90-Jährigen für die medizinische Versorgung aufgebracht. Deshalb entschloss sich seine Tochter Serena im Januar, mit einer Crowdfunding-Kampagne Geld für ihren Vater zu sammeln. „Wir haben einen ganzheitlichen Ansatz gewählt“, schrieb Serena. „Sowohl Behandlung als auch Pflege und Lebensunterhalt müssen wir aus eigener Tasche bezahlen.“ Am 24. Mai ist Wilbur James „Jimmy“ Cobb im Alter von 91 Jahren in New York gestorben.

Sooooo....I was sitting at the studio yesterday, staring off into space, and noticed this basket...I used it in a newbie session a few weeks ago, and now it was just sitting there with extra blankets in it. I was sending an email to a client about her baby's birthday session and asked if she wanted balloons...
Balloons? I got on the phone, called a fave client and begged her to bring in Baby G for a little while today.
I'm not claiming orginality, but I love it, and this photo makes me happy. :-D

Okay, I really wanted to title this Santa Baby....
I took this one without looking through the viewfinder - I focused then held the camera below my chin (well, sorta) , then got her attention by saying "hahahahhaa!" and she started cracking up. Not bad, I'll have to try that again.
In expectation of next weekend… another one of the beautiful @carla_sonre from previous session @paul_meulemans. Hopefully Covid-19 will contain itself in the Wroclaw area…
