Pickard Road Farm
I have painted this farm a few times, and have actually been on the property with permission during the Audubon Christmas bird count. However I could never see it close enough from this view off of Littlefield Road to do it justice. Problem solved-I recently bought a DSLR camera with a telephoto lens which gave me enough information to do a more detailed painting.
The original photo is bland and monochromatic, like the winter days we have been having lately. The colors in the sky are purely imagination.

This painting was made at an art class in Montsalvat, an artist colony on the outskirts of Melbourne. Photos of Montsalvat can be found in my album "Closer to home".
You can imagine who I was thinking of when I made this painting, but if you put that aside the result is half decent.
stage 4) I added in the dogwood flowering branches as well as the peony leaf. Also I wiped out the upper right corner background that I had considering using earlier
2) second part of this painting was build up using mop, or large round brushes and applying various different mixes. My approach at this stage was more detailed and less free/ loose then the initial paint splattering
12 x 16" watercolor on arches cold press paper. This piece was inspired by a still life set up of fresh flowers (including roses, tulips, and freesia, as well as other random flowers!) The vibrant colors combine with dry brush technique to create texture and dimension create a lovely composition that captures the beauty of the subject. this painting is in the initial stages and started off with a rather loose approach. I wet the paper and lightly circled the border of the paper 1) primary yellow 2) scarlet lake and quadricone red 3) cobalt blue. Then the paper dried and I later came back and splattered the approximate local colors of the major masses in the composition. As you can see it produced some interesteing results. Also I continued to build up washes on some of the more vivid flowers.
