CHICAGO - October 11, 2012. Governor Pat Quinn joined representatives of The Resurrection Project and local legislators today to announce the opening of the La Casa Student Housing development, an innovative community-based residence hall for area college students. Located in Chicagoâs Pilsen neighborhood, the six-story residence hall will provide local students with the benefits of on-campus housing, including live-in resident advisors for ongoing academic support. The development project created 95 construction jobs and includes a resource center featuring an onsite computer lab and academic advisors to provide career guidance and access to financial resources.
Building on Governor Quinnâs efforts to increase access to higher education, the state provided more than $8.4 million of the $12.2 million total project cost to build the La Casa Student Housing development and resource center. The state grant funds were used for the purchase of land and costs associated with the design and construction of both the residence hall, which will house 100 students and five resident aides, and the resource center.

This is a photo that I took just shortly after a fire house that was put out in the student area around Queen's University. Thankfully nobody had been injured.

The demolition of housing in Kents Hill, Milton Keynes, England that was not much more than 10 years old. That this was done is a shame because the buildings could have been renovated and used as council housing or shared ownership for people getting on the property ladder. Instead, Milton Keynes Council thought it would be best to allow a developer to come in and destroy the houses and not even require that the materials be salvaged so as not to be so wasteful.
In addition, much of the greenery - shrubs, plants and trees were torn up, dumped on and ruined at exactly the time of year when birds and other wildlife are nesting and trying to raise young. Their homes would have also been blighted in this process.
Seeing this made us angry. We didn't know what else to do except get photos and document it.
Shame on the Council, the developers and English Partnerships, all of whom were complicit in allowing this to happen. In the name of Greed.
