When the spring rains come, Dunedin turns mild and wet. I think it brings out the Scottish character very dramatically, and it's a good time to start photographing city scapes because of the added gloss everywhere. These images were taken in the student areas around the Polytechnic and university. I hope you appreciate that I got really, really drenched snapping these images. Haptchoo.

George Mason University. . Student residence hall, or simply put, dormitory. From a recently completed project. It is situated in the Shenandoah Valley, about two hours West of Washington DC. During the fall (autumn if you are Europe), the roads are jammed with people who want to enjoy the beautiful colors. Unfortunately, by the time the project was ready for photography, there were almost no leaves left on trees. I knew the colors will be brighter at sunrise and did not mind getting up before 5 in the morning . It paid off. The architect is the Texas firm PageSoutherlandPage.

This month, Jayhawk Kyle Berkley says goodbye to Dad and hello to his history when he moves to Stephenson Scholarship Hall, where his father lived as a KU student.

“I figured if my dad liked it, chances are that I would as well,” Kyle says.

He’s rooming with a friend, but more than a familiar face puts Kyle at ease.

“My dad only ever had good things to say about his scholarship hall and its community,” he says. “I think I'll have an easy time calling Stephenson home.”

From the college garden, behind the 17th century stone wall, you can see rising above it a series of ‘lantern like prospect towers’. Only a small gated opening in this old wall reminds you of an ‘Alice in wonderland’ like entrance offering secretive glimpses of a subterranean world.

Auditorium and Dining Room are on ground floor, directly behind this stone wall, all lit from circular openings or lanterns bringing natural light to this ‘underworld’.

A terrace forms an “Italianate” roof garden surrounded by residential towers and offering views of the gardens through gaps between the roof pavilions.

There is less use of precast concrete in this early example of this type of construction. The urban scale and context has been very successful.

This is the entrance area showing the staggered sitting bays clearly visible on tapered brick plinth on photo 2..

The concrete staircase is the pivotal feature as you enter.

This McDonalds has been here for ages since the presence of the metro. (1980's I'm guessing).

Just recently lots of housing was built in the neighborhood, so it will get even busier I think. The old Bijlmer bajes jail in the background has been sold for a new project.

The bend in the river and resulting staggering of blocks is unable to reproduce the serenity of the original but is functional. The service area, stairs and the Boat House shown before, are on the left at the end of this path.

The quality of daylight in this simple space is very impressive. The circular deep/tilted cut outs diffuse the light evenly.
