A stud---so I'm told---is a fastener whose shaft can be theaded (for use with a matching nut) or not (with some other securing device). One end, which could have a head, is concealed and inaccessible; during the fastening process a stud is held fast by the assembly of which it is a part or the material, such as concrete, surrounding it. In the picture, one end of the stud is encased in a concrete foundation. A bolt has a head that is accessible for holding with a tool.
