This is the view under the Dunlawton Bridge from the beachside in Port Orange, Florida. The massive pilings support the giant span across the Halifax River, over the boat channel. To the right you can see the end of the fishing pier. All of the concrete lying around has been there for years. For whatever reason, no one has ever cleared it away.
I have taken many shots from the top and other end of this bridge. One of them, a view down onto the deck of a sailboat, made Explore some time ago. It's a pretty neat place! I actually like the shots from Down Under a little more than those taken from the top. From here, you can see the pelican island, local restaurants and fishing boats, and these magnificent, powerful views of the bridge's construction, which never cease to amaze me.
Here in the Daytona area, the mainland, where most locals live, is separated from the beach areas by the Halifax River. There are six large bridges which span the river, some of which are still draw bridges, and a few, like this one, which have been replaced by huge, expansion bridges. Each bridge is different, and one even has two entirely separate expanses, one for northbound, and one for southbound, which begin or end at different places on the beachside, but join on the mainland. The prettiest of the bridges is the ISB, short for International Speedway Blvd., which is on the road where Daytona's Nascar track is. That bridge has mosaics of Florida wildlife done on the bases of its pilings, and on the bridge expanse's walls. I hope to start a set with pictures of all the area bridges in the near future.
Dunlawton Bridge is the southernmost bridge in the Daytona Beach area before Ponce Inlet. There are two large causeways to our south in New Smyrna Beach, as well. To our north, the next bridge is in Flagler Beach, at state road 100. From St. Augustine down much of the coast into Brevard County, there are intracoastal waterways like the St. Johns River, Tomoka River, Halifax, and Banana Rivers, which are spanned for beach access. The views are spectacular, and fishing is part of many peoples' lifestyles. What amazes me is the diversity of the architecture involved. From tiny to huge, old to new, Florida's bridges are works of art!
