2-Alarm Structure Fire -- 112 Scarboro Place, San Ramon by Jamie West

Units of the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District responded a full-first alarm to a reported structure fire on Scarboro Place in San Ramon on March 17th, 2014. First due Engine 39 arrived and confirmed a working structure fire with smoke and flames showing and established Scarboro IC and requested all incoming units continue in Code 3. IC was taken over by Battalion 31 (3112) upon arrival on scene. The fire was out by the time I arrived on scene, but all apparatus (with the exception of Engine 32A) were still on scene. A second alarm was struck summoning more engines, more battalion units, and the Breathing Support Unit to the scene. Responding units included Trucks 31 and 35, Engines 34, 38, 32, 30, 39, Paramedic 39, Rescue Medic 31, Battalion 31, 3110, 3112, 3113, and Breathing Support 31.

3112 is a mid 2000s-era Chevrolet Suburban.

Breathing Support 31 is a Hi-Tech SVI rescue rig built on a Spartan Gladiator chassis.

Truck 35 is a 2006 American-LaFrance tiller truck with a 100 ft. LTI aerial ladder.

LAFD Douses Studio City Attic Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

NORTH HILLS - On Saturday, December 12, 2020, LAFD firefighters were summoned to 259 North Vermont Avenue at 12:03 AM (the first incident of the new day) for a structure fire. Thirty-four LAFD firefighters extinguished fire in the attic, walls, and floor of a descending hillside home in 32 minutes. Companies inside protected belongings prior to applying water, while firefighters on the roof cut ventilation holes, but left the roofing in place until water was ready to be applied (then pulled the previously cut roofing to open the hole at the right time). The coordinated effort minimized damage from water, fire, and smoke. There were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Heavy Fire Damages Van Nuys Home by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 3:09PM on August 21, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 7100 block of N Mammoth Av for a reported structure fire. Crews arrived to find a single story dwelling with heavy fire showing. 83 firefighters extinguished the fire in 46 minutes with no injuries reported. The excessive storage inside the structure presented a challenge in safely reaching the seat of the fire. The fire extended into the attic but was prevented from spreading to a neighboring residence. The cause is under investigation by LAFD Arson Section.

Multiple Businesses Saved in Woodland Hills by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 5:26PM on June 14, 2019 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 20934 W Victory Blvd in Woodland Hills. Firefighters arrived to find a large (16,544 sq ft), one story row of commercials with fire showing from the end unit. The truck company went to the roof as fire attack intiated their entry through the front. An additional company went around to the back of the structure to evaluate possible access points. While roof division began cutting ventilation holes, fire attack reported difficulty in locating the seat of the fire. Firefighters continued pushing into the unit but the intense heat prevented their advance before reaching the (still not located) fire. With fire in the building's common attic, it became an untenable position for interior fire attack. Incident Commander, Assistant Chief Corey Rose, made the call to transition to a defensive operation. The companies at the back of the structure were able to open up a rolling steel door and using large diameter handlines, hit the fire from the outside.

Once the bulk of the flames abated, the incident reverted to an offensive operation and firefighters moved inside to pull ceiling and ensure no extension through the attic. Official 'knockdown' was achieved by 106 firefighters at the 49 minute mark. Their diligent efforts stopped this fire from moving across businesses and leaving a trail of destruction. The business adjacent to the fire unit suffered water/smoke damage and the two additional units only sustained smoke damage.

Paramedics evaluated one civilian patient who declined LAFD transport. Two firefighters were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. LAFD Arson responded and this remains an active investigation with cause and dollar loss to be determined.

At 2:04AM, April 15, 2020, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 1500 block of S Carmona Av. Firefighters arrived to find a vacant, one story single family dwelling with heavy fire showing. Firefighters extinguished the blaze in 16 minutes with no injuries reported.

East Hollywood Fire Destroys Building by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 8:33AM on October 27, 2019 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 4760 W Melrose Ave in East Hollywood. Firefighters arrived to find a two story, vacant center hall apartment building with heavy fire showing.

Interior fire attack immediately made entry while the truck company went to the roof to provide vertical ventilation. Heavy fire was encountered both on the first and second floors. As firefighters successfully extinguished the bulk of the fire on the first floor, the structural integrity of the building started to falter. With visible signs of pending collapse, Incident Commander Asssitant Chief Kristina Kepner made the call to transition to a defensive operation.

All firefighters safely exited the structure and left the roof to establish ladder pipe operations and hand lines for an exterior fire attack. 81 firefighters achieved a knockdown of the fire in 1 hour and 22 minutes with no injuries reported. A human remains detection K9 team responded to the incident to conduct a thorough search to ensure no victims were hidden under the debris. The cause of the fire is under active investigation by the LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section.

Firefighters found a one story bungalow with smoke showing. The first arriving fire companies extinguished the fire in 15 minutes with no injuries reported.

Stubborn Commercial Fire in Pico-Robertson by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 11:32AM on July 24, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 9041 W Pico Blvd. Firefighters arrived to find a 100’ x 50’ commercial building with heavy smoke showing.

Firefighters quickly threw ground ladders to the building, took a fire attack line inside and ascended the aerial ladder to initiate vertical ventilation. After working an aggressive, offensive attack for 28 minutes the conditions continued to deteriorate and the Incident Commander made the call to move to a defensive operation.

With master streams applying copious amounts of water into the structure, using the collapsed roof as a way to access the pockets of fire, crews gained the upper hand. 115 firefighters, working under the command of Assistant Chief Dean Zipperman, extinguished this Greater Alarm structure fire in two hours and 13 minutes. One firefighter was transported to the hospital for a non-life threatening heat related illness.

While no evacuations of the area were required, there was one home to the rear of the fire unit which was blanketed with the smoke. An elderly couple was sheltered in place and two paramedics stayed with them to ensure they were safe. They did not require any medical treatment and the home remained free of smoke.

One of the operations firefighters conduct at structure fire is called, Salvage. This entails covering, removing or otherwise protecting contents of a structure, as best as possible, from suffering damage during an emergency. This usually happens inside of a home; however, at this incident firefighters took the initiative to cover three vehicles with tarps. The cars were right in the middle of the fire ground and would likely be dinged or damaged in some way.

The initial stages of the cause investigation, by LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section, revealed evidence of a possible drug operation in the structure. The investigation remains active and on-going.

One Man Dies Overnight in a South LA Commercial Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

CENTRAL-ALAMEDA - A late-night commercial fire destroyed an industrial building and killed one man inside of his business.

In the last few remaining minutes of Monday, May 3, 2021, at 11:57 PM, the alarm went out to alert firefighters of a commercial building engulfed in flames on the 1800 block of East 57th Street. Firefighters immediately recognized the need to use defensive tactics and fight this fire with copious amounts of water from the exterior. The Incident Commander called for additional fire crews, making it a Greater Alarm incident. Firefighters positioned themselves on all sides of the building to protect the many surrounding structures. Firefighters protected adjacent buildings from all but minor flame impingement.

LAFD's robotic firefighting unit was utilized during the incident. RS3 was able to enter the structure and apply water to harder-to-reach areas without exposing firefighters to the collapse risk of the burned out structure. Ultimately, sixty-seven firefighters extinguished the flames in seventy-two minutes.

After the fire was out, firefighters discovered that, tragically, one man had perished inside. The Coroner responded and met with the family to verify his identity. The family reported that he was a carpenter and often worked during the late evening and early morning hours. The wood and materials from his business appear to have added to the intense fire load within the building, causing the fire to grow extremely fast. Crews remained on scene overnight to ensure the debris did not reignite.

The cause of the fire is under active investigation.

Reseda Wind-Driven Vegetation and Structure Fires Threaten Homes by Los Angeles Fire Department

RESEDA - A wind-driven tree fire spread through several blocks burning structures and vegetation.

On Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 11:53 AM, LAFD responded to a structure fire at the 18000 block of Elkwood St. The fire appeared to have started in ornamental vegetation near Strathern St, then was fueled by wind and pushed several blocks to the south across Blythe, Arminta, Elkwood and Ingomar. A post-fire survey revealed that only two homes sustained minor fire damage, and four out buildings were damaged or destroyed. LAFD Firefighters were on scene just three minutes after being dispatched and acted quickly to prevent this situation from becoming much worse in the warm/windy conditions, with an attack that included water-dropping helicopters. It took 68 firefighters 49 minutes to extinguish all of the flames. There were no injuries. The fire is under investigation.

Fire Destroys Sun Valley Home by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 8:38PM on January 9, 2022 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 13300 block of W Arminta St for a reported structure fire. The first arriving fire company found a one story, single family dwelling with heavy fire showing. 46 firefighters took 30 minutes to extinguish heavy fire in a 2,147 square-foot home. All four occupants exited the structure safely prior to LAFD arrival. There were no injuries reported.

Valley Village Fire Claims Life of Two Pets by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 10:10PM on August 27, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 5300 block of N Radford Av in Valley Village.

Firefighters extinguished the fire in a two story multi-unit residential building in 30 minutes. Sadly, a pet dog and cat perished. No occupants or firefighters were injured.

Third Street Fire in Downtown Los Angeles by Los Angeles Fire Department

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Fire Department was summoned at 1:50 AM on June 8, 2021 to the 200 block of East 3rd Street in Downtown Los Angeles, where firefighters arrived quickly to find a century-old commercial building engulfed in flames.

One hundred-fifty firefighters under the command of Assistant Chief Ernst confined the fire to a 200' x 50' three-story commercial building, saving nearby multi-story residential structures. Firefighters battled for over three hours to knock down the bulk of the flames. The structural integrity of the building was too compromised for firefighters to enter and finish extinguishment. Heavy machinery was brought in to move debris and uncover the many remaining hot spots. Firefighters stayed for most of the day to monitor the smoldering debris and continue to apply water when possible.

There were no reported injuries to firefighters or civilians.

Volunteers from the American Red Cross assisted unhoused persons whose tents were destroyed by fire, while Inspectors from the City's Department of Building & Safety examined the fire building to determine its structural integrity and potential for repair. Monetary loss from the fire is still being tabulated.

LAFD Fire Investigators have concluded their investigation and the cause will remain "undetermined." Evidence confirmed that the fire began inside the structure and is not related to the individuals in tents outside the structure. Due to the compromised structural integrity of the fire unit and partial building collapse in the probable area of ignition, investigators were unable to determine anything further.

Hollywood Fire Stopped Quickly by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 1:27PM on April 9, 2020 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 5700 block of W Melrose Av in Hollywood. 75 firefighters took just 19 minutes to extinguish an exterior fire that extended to the walls and a portion of the 2nd floor and attic of a (well-secured and densely filled with storage) 1,832 square-foot 2 story craftsman-style home (built 1915) that had been converted to 1st floor commercial (plumbing supply) and 2nd floor office space. There were no injuries reported.

Boyd Street Incident by Los Angeles Fire Department

On Saturday, May 16, 2020 at 6:26 p.m., the LAFD responded to a reported structure fire at 327 E. Boyd St. in downtown Los Angeles. The first companies arrived on scene within four minutes to find a one-story commercial building with smoke showing. The businesses were not open at the time and firefighters had to force entry with power saws to make access.

They immediately initiated an aggressive interior fire attack with hose lines, and a truck company was sent to the roof to perform vertical ventilation. As firefighting operations continued, the firefighters encountered increased pressurized smoke and heard a rumbling high-pitched sound. Firefighters identified the changing conditions and immediately started exiting the building and the roof as the situation rapidly deteriorated.

Shortly thereafter, a significant explosion created a massive fireball that enveloped the firefighters descending from the roof via an aerial ladder. The searing heat melted helmets, burned through protective coats and hoods and blistered and charred nearby fire apparatus.

A MAYDAY was immediately broadcast over the radio and treatment began on the 11 firefighters that had been caught in the inferno. All of the injured were working at Fire Station 9 on Skid Row, one of the nation’s busiest. Dozens of additional fire and ambulance resources were dispatched to the scene to assist with medical treatment and fire suppression as the blaze continued to spread.

All 11 firefighters were rapidly transported to LAC+USC Medical Center for treatment. A 12th firefighter was later treated and released at the hospital for a minor extremity injury. All 11 burned firefighters were admitted to the hospital with injuries of varying severity. Thankfully, all are expected to survive and as of the morning of Saturday, May 17, three had already been released from the hospital.

At the peak of the incident, more than 230 LAFD firefighters were on scene and the Major Emergency blaze was declared extinguished at 8:08 p.m., one hour and 42 minutes after it was reported. LAFD Arson investigators are working in conjunction with their law enforcement partners to investigate the cause and origin of the fire, as well as the nature of the business at the incident address.

A one story, industrial building (with six units) had fire showing from one unit. A closely coordinated roof ventilation and interior fire attack operation resulted in the stubborn fire being primarily contained to one unit. 39 firefighters fully extinguished the blaze in 29 minutes.

Five Hospitalized After Panorama City Fire Burns Through Apartments by Los Angeles Fire Department

PANORAMA CITY - Early Monday morning, firefighters extinguished flames that burned through multiple units of a four-story apartment building, sending five to the hospital.

The Los Angeles City Fire Department was alerted to a structure fire in Panorama City on the 9000 block of North Tobias Street at 6:53 AM on Monday, March 20, 2023. First-arriving crews observed smoke coming from an apartment building that contained three floors of residential units over a ground-level parking garage. Residents had pulled several on-site fire hoses out of occupant-use hose cabinets, which are included as part of the building's fire protection system, and stretched them across the outdoor courtyard in an attempt to hamper the fire's progress.

LAFD Firefighters were met with a densely-occupied 200-unit apartment building with immediate fire-suppression and medical needs. Firefighters advanced long stretches of fire hose toward the involved units, while simultaneously helping residents evacuate to paramedics standing by at collection points outside for medical evaluations, for those that needed help.

It took approximately 100 LAFD personnel 44 minutes to extinguish the flames, while also providing medical care. A total of eleven patients were treated on scene, and five of those transported to local hospitals. One transported patient was in serious condition and the other four were in fair-to-moderate condition. Six patients declined transport and further care. Sadly, one canine was found dead at the scene.

A total of sixteen people from ten damaged units will be temporarily displaced. The American Red Cross responded to assist those displaced families. Firefighters on scene are escorting those residents back into their damaged units to retrieve important belongings and medications.

Per protocol on this type of incident, Fire Investigators are examining the scene in an attempt to determine the cause. This remains an active investigation.

Firefighters arrived to find a two story, garden style apartment building with smoke showing. With an aggressive interior fire attack, crews quickly extinguished the fire in just 11 minutes with no injuries reported.

At 2:20PM on April 21, 2020, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 13500 block of W Bromwich St in Arleta. A 1,236 sq-ft one-story single family home built in 1952 was found to have smoke showing from a fire in the attic. It took 30 firefighters 33 minutes to shield belongings in the living space below, and access/extinguish the flames in the attic

Studio City Blazes Destroys Home by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 3:40AM on March 13, 2020 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 3700 block of N Eureka Drive. Firefighters found a large, one story home well involved in fire exposing two additional residences. After a battle spanning one hour and 18 minutes, the 52 firefighters on scene fully extinguished the fire. The two adjacent homes were defending from the fire extending, limiting it to some minor exterior damage to one home. Two firefighters were transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Due to the size of the building, LAFD Arson section responded to investigate the cause.

Fire in Abandoned Westlake Apartments by Los Angeles Fire Department

WESTLAKE - At 2:05 p.m. on July 2, 2019, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 800 block of S Westlake Avenue. Firefighters extinguished this non-injury fire in 45 minutes.

Firefighters found a vacant, boarded-up, two-story apartment building with heavy smoke showing. Fire was on the first and second floors, as well as in the walls and attic. Firefighters took an offensive posture and took the fight inside the structure. The structure was well-secured and firefighters overcame forcible entry challenges to open up the building. While firefighters were establishing hose lines and advancing inside to the fire, firefighters were on the roof simultaneously cutting holes to release smoke and super-heated gases. Ultimately the fire was snuffed out in 45 minutes and there were no people inside. We are pleased to report no injuries and no adjacent building were damaged.

LAFD Firefighters Defend Business from Large Outside Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

PACOIMA - LAFD Firefighters were summoned to the 12800 block of West Foothill Boulevard at 7:20 PM on July 23, 2023 for reports of a structure fire. Firefighters found a large outside fire to the rear of a row of commercial buildings. Flames spread to the a power pole (causing wires to come down) and a 40-foot trailer, but firefighters quickly extinguished the flames to keep the fire from entering the nearby business. It took 49 firefighters 32 minutes to fully extinguish the flames. One firefighter was transported to the hospital in fair condition, with burns on one extremity. Cause under investigation.

LAFD Prevents Burning Hillside Home from Sparking Brush Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

TARZANA - At 6:24 PM on Monday, August 2, 2021, LAFD responded to the 19600 block of West Valdez Drive, where a two-story hillside home was engulfed in flames, with fire starting to ignite nearby brush. Firefighters began the attack in defensive mode (from the exterior only), and later transitioned to offensive (inside the structure) to finish tracking down all of the fire within. Ultimately, it took 57 LAFD firefighters 33 minutes to extinguish the flames and keep a larger brush fire from ignition. The family escaped unharmed, but four will be displaced. No reported injuries.

At 9:25PM on October 19, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 2200 block of S Gaffey St in San Pedro. 30 LAFD firefighters extinguished the fire, which destroyed a secondary house to the rear of the property, in 31 minutes, while protecting nearby homes on either side. There were no reported injuries.

LAFD Quickly Extinguishes Granada Hills House Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

GRANADA HILLS - Thanks to a prompt 9-1-1 call from a vigilant neighbor, the Los Angeles City Fire Department was able to quickly arrive and extinguish a contents fire within an unoccupied one story home in the 12100 block of Bambi Place late January 13, 2021.

Multiple Businesses Saved in Woodland Hills by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 5:26PM on June 14, 2019 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 20934 W Victory Blvd in Woodland Hills. Firefighters arrived to find a large (16,544 sq ft), one story row of commercials with fire showing from the end unit. The truck company went to the roof as fire attack intiated their entry through the front. An additional company went around to the back of the structure to evaluate possible access points. While roof division began cutting ventilation holes, fire attack reported difficulty in locating the seat of the fire. Firefighters continued pushing into the unit but the intense heat prevented their advance before reaching the (still not located) fire. With fire in the building's common attic, it became an untenable position for interior fire attack. Incident Commander, Assistant Chief Corey Rose, made the call to transition to a defensive operation. The companies at the back of the structure were able to open up a rolling steel door and using large diameter handlines, hit the fire from the outside.

Once the bulk of the flames abated, the incident reverted to an offensive operation and firefighters moved inside to pull ceiling and ensure no extension through the attic. Official 'knockdown' was achieved by 106 firefighters at the 49 minute mark. Their diligent efforts stopped this fire from moving across businesses and leaving a trail of destruction. The business adjacent to the fire unit suffered water/smoke damage and the two additional units only sustained smoke damage.

Paramedics evaluated one civilian patient who declined LAFD transport. Two firefighters were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. LAFD Arson responded and this remains an active investigation with cause and dollar loss to be determined.

LAFD Incident: 061419-1138

Greater Alarm Commercial Fire in Harvard Park by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 5:22AM on September 16, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 1700 block of W Florence Av. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire showing through the roof of a mixed one and two story dry cleaning plant. 90 LAFD firefighters extinguished the blaze in one hour and 35 minutes. Firefighters initially made entry, but intense fire behavior drove them back out. Using ladder pipes and large hand lines from the exterior, firefighters extinguished the fire and successfully protected nearby structures. There were no injuries reported.

East Hollywood Fire Destroys Building by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 8:33AM on October 27, 2019 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 4760 W Melrose Ave in East Hollywood. Firefighters arrived to find a two story, vacant center hall apartment building with heavy fire showing.

Interior fire attack immediately made entry while the truck company went to the roof to provide vertical ventilation. Heavy fire was encountered both on the first and second floors. As firefighters successfully extinguished the bulk of the fire on the first floor, the structural integrity of the building started to falter. With visible signs of pending collapse, Incident Commander Asssitant Chief Kristina Kepner made the call to transition to a defensive operation.

All firefighters safely exited the structure and left the roof to establish ladder pipe operations and hand lines for an exterior fire attack. 81 firefighters achieved a knockdown of the fire in 1 hour and 22 minutes with no injuries reported. A human remains detection K9 team responded to the incident to conduct a thorough search to ensure no victims were hidden under the debris. The cause of the fire is under active investigation by the LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section.

Sun Valley Commercial Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 3:13PM on April 22, 2022 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 8200 block of N San Fernando Road in Sun Valley for a reported structure fire.

Firefighters arrived to find a one story, commercial building with fire showing. This was a vacant structure which had previously burned.

43 firefighters extinguished the fire in 20 minutes with no injuries reported. The fire was contained to the building of origin, prevented from extending to the attached businesses.

Major Blaze in Downtown Building by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 9:44PM on November 9, 2018 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 210 N Center Street in Downtown Los Angeles. The large, vacant building had numerous safety hazards from previous fires. While the building suffered extensive damage, firefighters defended the neighboring buildings from harm.

LAFD Incident: 110918-2060

LAFD Battles Flames in Tujunga Home by Los Angeles Fire Department

TUJUNGA - LAFD was summoned to 6461 West Valmont Street in Tujunga at 2:51 AM on Sunday, October 18, 2020, for a residential structure fire. Twenty-six firefighters engaged in battle, starting with a defensive attack from the exterior and transitioning to an offensive attack inside the structure, ultimately eliminating the flames in 33 minutes. There were no reported injuries.

Fire Attack via the Roof by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 6:18PM on February 20, 2021 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 1100 block of W Coronel St for a reported structure fire.

Firefighters found smoke showing from a single family dwelling and achieved a knockdown in 16 minutes with no injuries reported.

Midnight Blaze in South Los Angeles by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 10:55PM on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the 1700 block of E 57th Street for a reported structure fire. The first arriving companies found a large (approximately 300’ x 500’) pallet yard with heavy fire showing. Additional resources were quickly requested as crews moved into the defensive mode.

Firefighters went to work on all four sides of this incident, conducting fire attack against several outbuildings in the compound of the yard while simultaneously establishing master streams to drown out the pallet fire. Downed, high voltage power lines created an additional safety hazard for crews to work around.

116 LAFD firefighters, assisted by several companies from Los Angeles County Fire Department, working under the command of Assistant Chief Antoine McKnight, declared a knockdown of the fire in one hour and four minutes, with no injuries reported. No residential homes outside of the compound were damaged.

This was a Major Emergency status structure fire and thus, per protocol, LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section (ACTS) responded and are actively investigating the cause of the fire.

LAFD Extinguishes House Fire in Sun Valley by Los Angeles Fire Department

SUN VALLEY - Your Los Angeles Fire Department was summoned to 8730 N Bradley Avenue in Sun Valley at 11:53 P.M. on March 9, 2020, to find a one-story single family home with fire in the living space and extending into the attic. Thirty-one firefighters extinguished the fire in twenty minutes, keeping the fire from spreading to nearby homes, while avoiding arcing wires down in the street near a fire engine. There were no reported injuries. Cause and dollar loss TBD.

Strip Mall Fire Stopped by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 9:47PM, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 13600 block of W Vanowen St. Over 95 firefighters stopped this fire from destroying multiple units and achieved full extinguishment in just over an hour.

East Hollywood Structure Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 1:27PM on June 11, 2023 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 1030 block of N Vermont Ave in East Hollywood.

Firefighters arrived to a six story apartment building in the wood framing stage of construction with fire on the 3rd floor.

A surface fire was quickly extinguished before it extending into the framing of the structure. Workers were present conducting a tarring operation at the time.

No injuries were reported.

One Building Saved and One Destroyed by Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 9:20PM, on July 4, 2020, the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 8600 block of N Wilbur Ave in Northridge. Firefighters arrived to find a two-story apartment building with heavy fire showing on the 2nd floor.

Crews immediately initiated simultaneous evacuation and fire attack operations with four different critical actions needed; evacuate the structure, knock down the tree fire to stop the spread of dangerous embers, extinguish the structure fire and defend the second half of the complex from the encroaching flames.

The burning palm trees, known fire hazards due to the dead fronds which stay attached to the tree, released embers which carried onto the second building and started a fire on the roof. Firefighters were vigilant and quickly doused it with water to prevent the fire from taking root.

81 firefighters, under the command of Assistant Chief John Drake, battled for 43 minutes before declaring a knockdown. The two building complex suffered extensive damage in one building (8 units) while the dedicated efforts of all those involved defended the second building (8 units) from damage.

Firefighter/paramedics evaluated five patients and transported three for smoke related respiratory difficulties. Approximately 50 residents were displaced and Red Cross Los Angeles responded to provide them immediate assistance as needed.

LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section conducted an investigation and determined the cause of the fire was due to the use of illegal fireworks igniting the tree fire which extended into the structure.

LAFD Incident: 070420-1678

Winnetka Apartment Destroyed by Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 12:20PM on December 22, 2021 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 20200 block of W Cantara St in Winnetka. The first arriving 50 firefighters took just 36 minutes in a well coordinated offensive fire attack to access, confine and fully extinguish flames within a single three-story residential unit of two occupied floors above a ground level garage. Firefighters quickly and safely evacuated a mobility impaired female resident from a unit adjacent to the fire. No civilian or responder injuries have been reported.

LAFD Prevents Burning Hillside Home from Sparking Brush Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

TARZANA - At 6:24 PM on Monday, August 2, 2021, LAFD responded to the 19600 block of West Valdez Drive, where a two-story hillside home was engulfed in flames, with fire starting to ignite nearby brush. Firefighters began the attack in defensive mode (from the exterior only), and later transitioned to offensive (inside the structure) to finish tracking down all of the fire within. Ultimately, it took 57 LAFD firefighters 33 minutes to extinguish the flames and keep a larger brush fire from ignition. The family escaped unharmed, but four will be displaced. No reported injuries.

Pacoima Fire Quickly Handled by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 7:40PM on November 7, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire in the 12300 block of W Osborne St in Pacoima. 28 firefighters extinguished a contents-only fire in one upstairs bedroom in 13 minutes. A 60-year-old male was assessed and treated on scene by firefighter-paramedics for minor smoke inhalation, but declined transport to the hospital.
