Granada Hills Fire Kills One, Destroys Home by Los Angeles Fire Department

GRANADA HILLS - Just after 5 a.m. on September 28, 2019, firefighters found a one-story home engulfed in flames on the 10400 block of Densmore Ave. Excessive storage conditions inside and out impeded efforts to quickly access the burning structure. It took 72 firefighters 50 minutes to extinguish the blaze. Firefighters combed through the excessive storage conditions inside the destroyed structure after the flames were extinguished and discovered one deceased occupant (73-year-old female). Mayor's Crisis Response Team and Red Cross responded for on scene support.

Commercial Fire in Chatsworth by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 1:23PM on September 21, 2019 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 9500 block of N Owensmouth Av in Chatsworth. A one story, industrial building (with six units) had fire showing from one unit. A closely coordinated roof ventilation and interior fire attack operation resulted in the stubborn fire being primarily contained to one unit. 39 firefighters fully extinguished the blaze in 29 minutes.

Apartments Protected From Ensuing Blaze by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 4:04AM the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to 4659 W Fountain Ave to find a 2 story strip mall with heavy fire in one unit on the 2nd floor which was impinging on a 4 story apartment building butted up next to it. Over 100 firefighters took 51 mins to gain a knockdown and protected all 31 apartment units from any damage. No injuries reported and the cause of the fire is "undetermined, nothing suspicious in nature"

Reseda Fire Kills Occupant by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 6:53PM on July 7, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 7700 block of N Aura Av for a reported structure fire. 36 firefighters fully extinguished the fire in 14 minutes. Firefighters encountered excessive storage conditions inside which delayed access. Crews located and rescued one patient (65yo M) in grave condition and provided rapid transport with advanced life saving measures. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. LAFD Arson Section is actively investigating, per protocol for a fatality.

LAFD Fights Second Tarzana Greater Alarm Fire of the Day by Los Angeles Fire Department

TARZANA - Less than four hours after a Greater Alarm residential fire in Tarzana on Saturday, May 9, 2020, another Greater Alarm fire broke out in a commercial structure. LAFD battled fire in a one-story commercial building. After performing forcible entry to gain access, firefighters deployed hose lines into the structure, as truck companies ascended ladders to the roof. It took 59 firefighters 32 minutes to extinguish the flames. One firefighter sustained a non-life-threatening injury. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters began the attack in defensive mode (from the exterior only), and later transitioned to offensive (inside the structure) to finish tracking down all of the fire within. Ultimately, it took 57 LAFD firefighters 33 minutes to extinguish the flames and keep a larger brush fire from ignition. The family escaped unharmed, but four will be displaced. No reported injuries.

Greater Alarm Commercial Fire in Harvard Park by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 5:22AM on September 16, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 1700 block of W Florence Av. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire showing through the roof of a mixed one and two story dry cleaning plant. 90 LAFD firefighters extinguished the blaze in one hour and 35 minutes. Firefighters initially made entry, but intense fire behavior drove them back out. Using ladder pipes and large hand lines from the exterior, firefighters extinguished the fire and successfully protected nearby structures. There were no injuries reported.

Public Storage Fire in Sylmar by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 6:58AM on March 19, 2022 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 12600 block of W Foothill Blvd in Sylmar for a reported structure fire.

The first fire company arrived to find a two story, Public Storage complex with heavy smoke showing.

Over 80 firefighters extinguished the fire in 43 minutes with no injuries reported. The fire appears to have started on the 1st floor and extended up to the 2nd and through a common void space (similar to an attic) horizontally to additional units. A total of four units on the first floor and five units on the 2nd floor sustained heavy fire damage. A portion of the 2nd story floor burned through. The fire was in one, isolated building (they are not connected) in the complex of storage buildings. Firefighters quickly opened units and accessed the void space from the interior and the roof to stop the spread and save the rest of the units.

Four Injures, Five Structures Damaged in Hollywood Fire

HOLLYWOOD - Fast moving flames damaged five residential buildings and led to four persons sustaining injury in the Hollywood Studio District Friday morning.

The Los Angeles Fire Department was notified by a 9-1-1 caller at 9:08 AM on Friday, January 22, 2021 of a structure fire at 1245 North Bronson Avenue in Hollywood.

Firefighters arrived quickly to find a vacant and boarded one story home in a large unkempt lot, fully involved with fire, with flames extending to a vacant home on the same parcel.

Fire was simultaneously taking hold of the attic at an occupied two story Craftsman-style home on a neighboring property to the north, and yet another vacant home on the same parcel, behind that structure. Flames also threatened an occupied three story garden-style apartment building to the south.

The fierce and well-coordinated firefight by 97 firefighters under the command of Assistant Chief Dean Zipperman extinguished the flames in just 39 minutes.

Damage to the apartment building was kept largely superficial, with some broken windows and damage to a balcony. The effort of LAFD responders also largely limited fire within the attic of the Craftsman-style home.

The trio of other vacant structures, including the building of fire origin and the somewhat dilapidated buildings to the rear of each home, were destroyed by the flames, which also damaged at least one vehicle.

Three civilians and one firefighter sustained non-life threatening injuries related to the fire, with the three civilians taken to area hospitals for further care, including an adult male resident of the apartment building with burns to his arm, and a pair of adult females from the Craftsman-style home - one of whom sustained minor burn injury, and the other, who had no obvious injury, but was carried from the premises by passersby prior to LAFD arrival.

The firefighter, who sustained facial trauma at the peak of the firefight, was briefly assessed and treated at scene before returning quickly to the battle.

No other injuries were reported.

Fire loss to the five buildings, three of which were vacant, is still being tabulated. The cause of the greater alarm fire remains under active investigation.

At 2:38 PM on October 16, 2018 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 17700 block of W Devonshire St in #Northridge. Firefighters initially saw very light smoke and found workers in kitchen of 2 story condo. Upon further investigation, crews determine a fire was in the walls of the kitchen and moving up towards the 2nd floor. Working quickly to locate the fire, firefighters it from extending and damaging the entire structure.

Quick Knockdown on Small Commercial Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

Multiple Businesses Saved in Pacoima by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 9:08PM on March 29, 2022 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 13200 block of W Van Nuys Blvd in Pacoima. The first arriving fire company found a row of one story commercial units with fire showing through the roof and quickly requested additional resources.

With the bulk of the fire in one unit (2nd in from the end), the focus was to prevent the horizontal spread to adjoining businesses. The truck company went to the roof and placed themselves ahead of the fire to initiate a strip ventilation operation. Strip ventilation extends the entire width of the unit and creates a fire break which slows the fire's progress.

Meanwhile, an interior attack began but quickly encountered excessive storage conditions inside, hampering their progress. With the fire intensifying, the Incident Commander shifted strategies to a transitional attack, pulling all companies out of the building. Once officers confirmed all crews were out, large amounts of water were applied from the exterior, using both hand lines and wagon batteries (fixed appliance atop the fire engine). This tactic provides a brief 'break of the fire triangle' by cooling the environment which allows firefighters to resume an interior fire attack.

The bulk of the fire was at the rear (Charlie side) of the unit and while the preferred approach is to move from the 'uninvolved to the involved' portion of the building, the excessive storage conditions forced crews to make entry and conduct fire attack from the back.

Ultimately, over 70 firefighters, working under the command of Assistant Chief Corey Rose, extinguished the fire in 42 minutes with no injuries reported.

They contained the fire to the unit of origin (13289 Van Nuys Blvd, 3,400 sq ft unit built in 1955) with minimal damage to the adjoining business on the Alpha (southwest) side (13293 Van Nuys Blvd) and some damage to the roof members of the opposite adjoining unit (13287 Van Nuys Blvd). The rest of the businesses were defended from any fire damage.

Per protocol, LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section responded and it remains an active, open investigation.

East Hollywood Fire Destroys Building by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 8:33AM on October 27, 2019 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 4760 W Melrose Ave in East Hollywood. Firefighters arrived to find a two story, vacant center hall apartment building with heavy fire showing.

Interior fire attack immediately made entry while the truck company went to the roof to provide vertical ventilation. Heavy fire was encountered both on the first and second floors. As firefighters successfully extinguished the bulk of the fire on the first floor, the structural integrity of the building started to falter. With visible signs of pending collapse, Incident Commander Asssitant Chief Kristina Kepner made the call to transition to a defensive operation.

All firefighters safely exited the structure and left the roof to establish ladder pipe operations and hand lines for an exterior fire attack. 81 firefighters achieved a knockdown of the fire in 1 hour and 22 minutes with no injuries reported. A human remains detection K9 team responded to the incident to conduct a thorough search to ensure no victims were hidden under the debris. The cause of the fire is under active investigation by the LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section.

Studio City Blazes Destroys Home by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 3:40AM on March 13, 2020 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 3700 block of N Eureka Drive. Firefighters found a large, one story home well involved in fire exposing two additional residences. After a battle spanning one hour and 18 minutes, the 52 firefighters on scene fully extinguished the fire. The two adjacent homes were defending from the fire extending, limiting it to some minor exterior damage to one home. Two firefighters were transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Due to the size of the building, LAFD Arson section responded to investigate the cause.

Midnight Blaze in South Los Angeles by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 10:55PM on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the 1700 block of E 57th Street for a reported structure fire. The first arriving companies found a large (approximately 300’ x 500’) pallet yard with heavy fire showing. Additional resources were quickly requested as crews moved into the defensive mode.

Firefighters went to work on all four sides of this incident, conducting fire attack against several outbuildings in the compound of the yard while simultaneously establishing master streams to drown out the pallet fire. Downed, high voltage power lines created an additional safety hazard for crews to work around.

116 LAFD firefighters, assisted by several companies from Los Angeles County Fire Department, working under the command of Assistant Chief Antoine McKnight, declared a knockdown of the fire in one hour and four minutes, with no injuries reported. No residential homes outside of the compound were damaged.

This was a Major Emergency status structure fire and thus, per protocol, LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section (ACTS) responded and are actively investigating the cause of the fire.

At 2:21AM on September 14, 2019 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the 13100 block of W Eustace St in Pacoima for a reported structure fire. Firefighters arrived to find a vacant single family dwelling well involved in fire. Despite initial unconfirmed reports of a person trapped inside, no injuries were reported and no victims located. 28 firefighters extinguished the blaze in 19 minutes, defending the adjacent homes from damage.

Major Emergency Blaze Consumes Building by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 7:48PM on November 25, 2021 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 1820 E 48th Place in the Central-Alameda area. The address, site of a Greater Alarm fire two nights prior, included four large, adjoining buildings which housed multiple businesses. Heavy fire was showing from one building, already through the roof upon LAFD arrival.

Truck companies deployed ladder pipes and engine companies flowed wagon batteries while establishing large diameter hand lines. Forcible entry was required to open all the rolling steel doors and give firefighters access to the blaze from the exterior.

An entrenched battle continued through the night with 115 firefighters, under the command of Assistant Chief Kristina Kepner, working aggressively to defend the adjoining structures. Their efforts prevented the fire from extending and protected numerous businesses.

LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section had an open investigation into the cause of the fire at this address on November 23, 2021 and were on scene to conduct the cause investigation into this fire as well, which remains ongoing.

Pacoima Fire Damages Church, Threatens Motel by Los Angeles Fire Department

PACOIMA - It took 71 Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters little more than an hour to stop a fast-moving outdoor rubbish fire that extended into and heavily damaged a one-story church in the 10200 block of North San Fernando Road shortly after noon on Sunday, May 15, 2022. An adjacent residential motel, threatened by the stubborn flames, was temporarily evacuated by LAFD responders,. before the fire was extinguished and they could be rehoused. No injuries were reported.

Greater Alarm Fire in Fashion District by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 4:19AM on July 11, 2019 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 1220 S Wall St in Downtown Los Angeles. Firefighters arrived to find a 50’ x 100’ row of commercial units with heavy smoke showing. Immediately, crews initiated simultaneous operations with truck companies going to the roof, firefighters working on forcible entry to gain access and hand lines being prepared for interior fire attack.

The 6,900 square foot building, built in 1924, is deep and presented challenges reaching the fire. After approximately 20 minutes of working to locate the seat of the fire while it continued to rage, the conditions were too precarious for the offensive operation to continue. Incident Commander, Battalion Chief Michael Castillo, declared the transition to a defensive operation and all firefighters withdrew both from the interior and the roof.

Crews quickly put multiple master streams in action, setting up ladder pipes and large diameter hand lines on the ground and the roofs of adjoined buildings. Their dedicated efforts in defending the two attached buildings on either side of the fire unit paid off and prevented any extension into those structures.

102 firefighters achieved full extinguishment of the fire in one hour and 49 minutes with no injuries reported. The three units in the main building suffered varying levels of damage with the central unit being most heavily affected. Overhaul Operations at South LA Structure Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

The first arriving 24 firefighers quickly extinguished a non-injury structure fire in the 7100 block of S Brynhurst Av in Hyde Park, South LA. The overhaul operations to ensure all hot spots were addressed and the roof cleaned up were captured by local photographer.

Multiple Autos Burn Into Buildings by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 4:48AM on April 23, 2020 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported auto fire in the 1300 block of S 2nd Av in Arlington Heights. While resources were enroute, the incident was upgraded to a structure fire response. Firefighters arrived on scene to find at least nine autos and three garages/carports burning, spreading flames to two other buildings. It took 71 firefighters 53 minutes to extinguish the flames across the multiple garages/autos and both residential occupancies. There were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is under active investigation

Major Emergency Blaze Consumes Building by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 7:48PM on November 25, 2021 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 1820 E 48th Place in the Central-Alameda area. The address, site of a Greater Alarm fire two nights prior, included four large, adjoining buildings which housed multiple businesses. Heavy fire was showing from one building, already through the roof upon LAFD arrival.

Truck companies deployed ladder pipes and engine companies flowed wagon batteries while establishing large diameter hand lines. Forcible entry was required to open all the rolling steel doors and give firefighters access to the blaze from the exterior.

An entrenched battle continued through the night with 115 firefighters, under the command of Assistant Chief Kristina Kepner, working aggressively to defend the adjoining structures. Their efforts prevented the fire from extending and protected numerous businesses.

LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section had an open investigation into the cause of the fire at this address on November 23, 2021 and were on scene to conduct the cause investigation into this fire as well, which remains ongoing.

Panorama City Fire in Apartment Building by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 11:13AM on December 10, 2019 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 8400 block N Willis Av in Panorama City. 35 firefighters achieved knockdown of fire on both first and second floors of a two story garden style apartment building in 15 mins. Crews conducted search on both floors and found no one requiring medical care. The person initially reported as a possible patient declined any medical care

Sun Valley Fire Head to One Unit by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 9:41PM on March 31, 2021 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 12500 block of W Sheldon St in Sun Valley. 31 firefighters extinguished the fire in 21 minutes. There are three structures on the property and firefighters contained the fire to the unit of origin. A primary and secondary search were clear with no injuries reported.

Pacoima Fire Quickly Handled by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 7:40PM on November 7, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire in the 12300 block of W Osborne St in Pacoima. 28 firefighters extinguished a contents-only fire in one upstairs bedroom in 13 minutes. A 60-year-old male was assessed and treated on scene by firefighter-paramedics for minor smoke inhalation, but declined transport to the hospital.

Hollywood Fire Stopped Quickly by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 1:27PM on April 9, 2020 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 5700 block of W Melrose Av in Hollywood. 75 firefighters took just 19 minutes to extinguish an exterior fire that extended to the walls and a portion of the 2nd floor and attic of a (well-secured and densely filled with storage) 1,832 square-foot 2 story craftsman-style home (built 1915) that had been converted to 1st floor commercial (plumbing supply) and 2nd floor office space. There were no injuries reported.

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - The Los Angeles City Fire Department responded quickly on the afternoon of August 2, 2020, to a well involved garage fire at 6146 Hazelhurst Place. The first arriving firefighters had the non-injury fire extinguished in less than 15 minutes, before flames could damage nearby structures.

LAFD Assists Alhambra Fire and Puts RS3 in Action by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 5:52PM on November 7, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded, mutual aid, to assist Alhambra Fire Department with a structure fire in a concrete building. Due to the scenario, the Incident Commander called for the RS3 Robotic Firefighting Vehicle which could enter into the below ground area to fight the fire while protecting firefighter safety.
