On 13 September 2016, Peres, then 93 years old, suffered a "massive stroke" and was hospitalized at the Sheba Medical Center in Israel. His condition stabilized, but on 27 September 2016 it was reported that he had suffered irreversible brain damage and organ failure and was reportedly in terminal condition. He died the following day in hospital. Peres was described by the New York Times as having done "more than anyone to build up his country’s formidable military might, then [having] worked as hard to establish a lasting peace with Israel’s Arab neighbors."
