Scott Scoggin works to complete a mural he and his wife Jacqui are painting on a “happenings” board on Market Street near 13th Street. The art project is part of Spaceworks Tacoma — a joint program of the City of Tacoma and the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber. The program was launched in 2010 to “activate empty storefronts and vacant spaces,” according to its website. The board they are painting is one of two left from the 1950s, he said. They are destined to be removed by the city, he said, but they are determined to give the space a little color before that happens. “Our mural will be up for a year,” he said. The Scoggins started their project two days ago and are hoping to finnish by the end of the day. The couple are artists who own Year Round Co., a design business on the Hilltop neighborhood.
For this assignment, I decided to emulate the “pop art” style, with Andy Warhol being one of the most iconic artists of the Pop Art movement. His work was characterized by a focus on everyday consumer culture, portraits of celebrities, and mass production. When I reviewed his pop art style portraitures, I was very impressed by the vibrant, bold, and bizarre colors. The high contrast also makes this style look more captivating.
First, I chose my girlfriend to be my subject. Fortunately, the day I took the photo was her birthday, so the photo itself already had a vibe of happiness. The content of Andy Warhol’s pop art style usually evokes a sense of fun, happiness, and enjoyment, so I think taking my girlfriend’s birthday photo is very suitable for the pop art style.
After the shooting phase, I moved to the next steps: editing to transform the natural style image into a pop art style. First, I converted the photo to black and white. I increased the contrast significantly to make the photo look bold. I lowered the shadow bar and made the highlights brighter. This process increases the stroke weight and intensity of the outlines separating objects in the picture.
Next, I isolated the subject and the background into two layers. This made it easier to color the background and objects separately. Then, I applied colors to these layers. As a result, I chose blue for the subject and orange for the background. Orange and blue are complementary colors, meaning they are opposite each other on the color wheel. This creates a high contrast and visually striking combination. These colors are also my favorite, which further supported my decision.
In the final step, I added a dotted overlay to make the image look catchier and feel like it was printed on a canvas surface.
I know there are still a lot of things I could do to make this image look more “pop art style.” I hope to read all of your opinions. Thank you.
