I had a chance to visit Kamimoto Strings in San Jose's Japantown yesterday. One of the interns on the Web team at SCU works there part-time. She showed the owners my portfolio and they were curious about how I might shoot their shop. I spent about an hour shooting around the shop with the TtV rig, the Lensbaby Composer/Sweet 35 combo, the GF1 and Pinwide, and the E-PL3 with the Oly 17mm 2.8 and Panny 7-14mm f4. I took a few iPhone shots, too. They were pretty busy, and I tried not to get in the way, but I think I captured the essence of their business...

All shots straight from camera as is, I have no time to edit.

I'd seen the recent suggestion for strings on the Tanglepatterns website, so yesterday lunchtime I pencilled them all onto a piece of A5 Bristol board.

They were great fun! I limited myself to 3 tangles per square and no more than two "fillers"

I especially like Sandra's "Weequash" tangle. Thank you for sharing Sandra "Molossus"! ;@) Fi

My best attempt to take a creative shot of my bass guitar with my new speedlites and wescott boxes. As you can see, the guitar's gone unused for a while...

Side lighting, point of interest and contrast of colour against black. Theme is to represent the feel of how acoustic guitars sound visually rather than in stereo.

Title of photo: Strings

Objective 2: Creative Exposure

The camera mode (P, Tv, Av, M) and why I chose it: P, chosen at this time due to the fact that we had not completely gone over other modes.

f stop used: 9.0

shutter speed used: 1/200

ISO used: 200

Exposure compensation: 0EV

Focal length: 18mm

Objective 3: Elements and Principles of Design

The principles of design demonstrated: Unity, balance, contrast

The elements of design demonstrated: Form, Shape, Space, Value/Tone

Objective 4: Lighting

Type of lighting: Diagonal semi-diffused lighting

Objective 5: Post Production (ex. dust/spot removal, contrast, white balance, sharpening, borders, etc.)

Corrections/adjustments made: Curves/contrast upped to make the wood on the guitar more textured and vibrant, showing shadows and the reflection on the surface more vividly-- Fully blacked out the background so the background wouldn't take away from the vibrant guitar, washed out slightly to diffuse the darkness of the black so it wouldn't overpower the guitar's colour, unsharp mask to help make details (such as guitar strings) appear more crisp

Objective 7: Photographic Styles (ex. portrait, landscape, etc.)

Type/style of photography: Still life,

The camera mode (P, Tv, Av, M) and why I chose it: P-- wasn't taught the other modes at this particular time, although having the automatic setting helped keep the guitar in the main focus which was difficult to achieve at this time with any other setting

f stop used: 9.0

shutter speed used: 1/200

ISO used: 200

Exposure compensation: 0EV

Today I finally decided to head down to Guitar Center and get some more bass strings (if you're a bassist you know this isn't the happiest moment). While I was there I saw and played my future bass (a five string one-piece body Ocean, a guitar center exclusive, extremely well made 700$) that at least lifted my spirits.

Winding new string on for me is so gratifying, it's like getting a new instrument every time you do!

I bought these because I want to record a song this upcoming week for when one of my more recent friends comes over. She has a great singing voice and I want to write a song for her to sing with. I was thinking something around the lines of pop/rock, and David Bowie is a huge influence on me there so you can it expect it to sound similar.

P.S. Check the EXIF data for a laugh :P

A friend started playing the guitar and I had to take a fast shot.

Durga Puja in Kolkata

I took this picture in a Puja Pandal in Central Kolkata. The pandal was mostly made of strings and the base material other than string was plaster.

Here I tried to frame the face of the idol through the strings...trying to experiment with framing & DOF.

I did a photo-shoot for DR Strings a week ago to help them introduce their new and amazing guitar and base strings. These strings are very cool. I posted my 5 favorite photographs from that shoot.

We had Thanksgiving at Jean Ritchie's house (www.jeanritchie.com). Her house is like an antiques shop- everywhere you look there are old instruments and interesting things.

the headlining band had strings with parts written out and arranged and everything. what i always wanted. but what i have (improvisation) is nice, too.

Stills from SAGA's recent shoot

Taken with a 200mm zoom + 2x extender. I a little blurrier than I would like, but for reasons I can't explain, I like this photo.
