Ten zuiden van Alicante en niet ver van de bekende kustplaats Torrevieja ligt Elche. Dit stadje kent een bijzondere bezienswaardigheid: De schitterende palmentuinen.
De palmenplantages in Elche vormen al sinds meer dan 1.000 jaar een uniek landschap. Met meer dan 200.000 exemplaren, is het de grootste palmentuin van Europa. Hoewel het gezien vanaf een afstand op een bos lijkt, is het eigenlijk een plantage gemaakt voor agrarische doeleinden.
De oorsprong van de plantajes teruggaat tot de 10e eeuw, toen de Arabieren zich in het huide Elxe vestigden. Het systeem van de de plantages is dan ook Andalusische oorprong, dat heeft overleefd tot op de dag van vandaag.
In de jardín El Huerto del Cura vind je onder meer andere cactussen, agaven, granaatappelbomen en vijgenbomen. In het najaar worden de trossen dadels geoogst en worden deze bewerkt tot producten als jam, wijn en likeur.
Een bezienswaardigheid is de 'palmera imperial', een palm met zeven stammen die uit één hoofdstam groeien. Naar schatting is hij 175 jaar oud. De Keizerin Elisabeth van Oostenrijk-Hongarije (ook wel bekend als Sissi) gaf de palm deze naam toen zij in 1894 een bezoek aan Elche bracht.

Strelitzia reginae, known as 'Bird of Paradise' or 'Crane Flower', is a popular garden plant for obvious reason. Specimens in my Gold Coast hinterland garden grow prolifically but flowers (280mm) become scruffy quite quickly as spikes bloom sequentially from the shield and die off. Pollination is effected by birds attracted by the spectacular blooms. Note that nectar is seeping from this example.

Commonly known as Bird of Paradise, these flowers are striking against a blue sky. After two years of above average rain, they have more blooms than I have ever seen.

De naam paradijsvogelbloem is gegeven doordat de bonte kleuren doen denken aan paradijsvogels. De bloemen worden in hun oorsprongsgebied ook daadwerkelijk bestoven door vogels (honingzuigers). De paradijsvogelbloem is afkomstig uit Zuid-Afrika. Hij wordt wereldwijd in (sub)tropische gebieden gekweekt. In België en Nederland kan de paradijsvogelbloem in de gematigde of warme kas worden gekweekt.
Spikes of the popular Strelitzia species unfold from the sheath in this case from right to left. I think this is now the complete array. Note that the sequential unfolding means that the first petals may deteriorate before later ones fully unfold, a hazard for photographers. Still, I think image one passes muster. I like especially the tones and texture of the last purple spike as it emerges.
Our local gardens have copped a battering in some recent stormy weather (strong enough to blow a tile off our roof!) and a lot of flowers suffered as a result. This lovely Bird of Paradise flower (Strelitzia) was no exception, but still managed to look amazing anyway.

Strelitzia reginae is commonly known as the crane flower or bird of paradise is an evergreen perennial widely cultivated for its dramatic flowers.
Joseph Banks described the species in 1788. The specific epithet reginae means “of the queen”, and commemorates the British queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of George III.[3] Common names such as “crane flower” and “bird of paradise” reference the open flower’s resemblance to the head and beak of a colourful exotic bird.
