The rounded overhanging architectural bits above windows in art deco buildings are called "eye brows" and the bit of palm tree looks like eye lashes to me - just having fun in Miami!

This pier was built in 1935 and is a fine example of the style of architecture which I believe is called Streamline Moderne, a development of late Art Deco.

No, we're not on an ocean liner, but this style of architecture was used for some.

The Adilman Building is Saskatoon's most identifiable Streamline Moderne building. The strong horizontal lines, large overhangs, rounded corners and use of glass block give it a very distinctive look.

Bright, sunny day. The gate was closed so I only got this side view of this historic art deco apartment building on Changshu Lu.. Cool portholes.

It wasn't a real project, just an exercise of abstraction. Nowadays, it's looks like a way to rescue old memories.

The Schaubühne is a moderne theater converted from an old cinema. It was designed by Erich Mendelsohn and completed in 1926. The theater's modern lines make it perhaps the first truly modern movie theater, as opposed to the movie palaces of the time, and it likely influenced the later streamline moderne style.

Film on Marquee: SCHÖN IST JEDER TAG DEN DU MIR SCHENKST, MARIE LOUISE (1934)

A clear look at the new facade by architect H. van Vreeswijk of the Rembrandt, from when there were still no trees planted. Inside a German film is shown, which was released in The Netherlands as MARIE LOUISE, which probably played here in October of 1934. Nicknamed "Het Open Boek" (The Open Book) by locals, due to the shape of the facade.

Keeping the place tidy—by the looks of it, consistently throughout the last 75 years.

Opened in 1931 on the 9th floor of Eaton's Montreal department store, this Art Deco landmark, designed by Jacques Carlu and inspired by the S.S. ÃŽle-de-France, remained in operation until Eaton's bankruptcy in 1999. Painstakingly restored, the space was reopened in May 2024.

Police station? School? Any guesses?

Farmers Valley, PA

Near the outskirts of town sits this sharp little late-deco building with a matching garage out back. It doesn't appear to be used in any public capacity at this time, and there were no identifying marks that I could see. Anyone know anything about its origins?

This was one of the streamline moderne hotels I had noted from other people's streams here at flickr that I wanted to spend some time photographing the minimalist angles, etc. but again I found more :>)!

A black and white version of a shot I posted yesterday. I really like the depth of the sky in this one. I think it converted well.

You can see clearly how the designers tried to create a smooth line that flows from the bridge to the stern. The design was meant to allow the great liner to slide smoothly through the wind and make it one of the fastest and most economical of it's day. The design was dubbed Streamline Moderne and began showing up in all forms of design from architecture to everyday household items.
