Streamlined art deco van. This design is a slightly modified version of Flickr user snaillad's van, which you can find in his photostream. I wanted to do a different colour and add a more rounded rear - and I think I achieved the last part quite nicely. First created in MLCad, then built with real bricks.

Originally manufactured in 1926 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO), no. 4915 and her sister no. 4917 were streamlined in 1936 to lead The New York Central’s most luxurious experience on rails.

 

This project is my first MOC and has taken about a year and a half to complete with many challenges arising in trying to obtain the beautiful "streamline moderne" styling. Perseverance paid off however and through 1/2 steps, 1/3 steps and even 1/6 steps I have ended with a final version that I hope you all will enjoy.

 

The model is 8-wide, built to 1:48 scale and is designed to fit all standard lego track geometry. The locomotive is powered by two Power Functions M motors.

The Canada Science and Technology Museum has a compact but impressive display of Canadian steam engines in their main building (with more in storage). Probably the most impressive is CN 6400, one of 5 streamlined engines the Montreal Locomotive Works (GTW also had similarly streamlined engines built by Lima).

1930's Micheline streamlined railcar at the Citi du Train (National Railway Museum) in Mulhouse, France. These cars utilized a set of special flanged rubber tires with aluminum safety rings inside.(see the 3rd and 4th photos in this set). Sir Nigel Gresley - LNER Class A4

 

As promised, some more photos! :-) Me and www.flickr.com/photos/50428574@N08/ went out for a photoshoot and we went to Falling Foss but sadly we could not get down to the waterfall (well not safely with all our camera gear) to take any photos so I heard that there was a steam gala on at the North Yorkshire Moors railway so we had a trip up to Grosmont station where the North Yorkshire Moors railway runs through from Pickering to Whitby.

 

To our surprise there was the Sir Nigel Gresley doing runs back and forth between Whitby and Pickering. What else was good was that it was not too busy at this station so prime photo taking spots were plenty.

 

This photo was achieved by first putting the 3 images going to be used into PTLens and then stitching them together 3 in Photoshop Elements 9 and then re-imported back into Lightroom for a bit of post processing and thats it! I do wish the sky had a bit more detail in but it was completely clear and blue (believe it or not). I do have a few more from this day that I want to upload so keep visiting my photostream for updates :-)

The Class A4 is a class of streamlined 4-6-2 steam locomotive, designed by Nigel Gresley for the London and North Eastern Railway in 1935. Their streamlined design gave them high-speed capability as well as making them instantly recognizable, and one of the class, 4468 Mallard, still claims the official record as the fastest steam locomotive in the world. 35 of the class were built to haul passenger express trains on the East Coast Main Line route from London Kings Cross to the north of England and to Scotland. They remained in service until the early 1960s when they were replaced by Deltic diesel locomotives.

Stylish tramcar recently appeared at Beamish museum.

The gloriously streamlined art-deco Duchess of Hamilton sits outside the National Railway Museum for Railfest.

 

Built in 1938 and one of thee Princess Coronation class, the train sports a streamlined design by Sir William Stanier and is the most powerful express passenger locomotive built in Britain.

 

The train was destreamlined in 1947 and only restored in 2009 after a sustained appeal.

 

Railfest 2012 was a nine-day celebration of all things train-related, held at the National Railway Museum in York during the period of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

 

Famous locomotives such as Mallard, the Flying Scotsman and even the Hogwarts Express all lined up out on the tracks, with thousands of visitors taking the chance to admire them up close or even climb aboard.

 

Several trains were operating over the course of the festival, with steam puffing into the sky as they carried visitors up and down small stretches of track.

 

The National Railway Museum in York is the largest railway museum in the world and houses a collection of more than three million items, from ticket machines and platform signs to bullet trains and steam locomotives.

 

The museum charts the rise of the railways in the 19th century, their use in the transportation of goods and people, their role in the Industrial Revolution and their overall effect on the world, especially England.

 

The current museum was founded in 1975 and is housed in a former steam engine shed, an old goods depot and numerous other buildings close to York station.

 

The main structure, the Great Hall, holds everything from a replica of Stephenson’s Rocket, the first steam train from 1829, to the Flying Scotsman, from the Mallard to a modern-day bullet train – one of a very select group of bullet trains outside of Japan.

 

There is also a workshop where visitors can see museum volunteers and engineers working on trains and the station hall, where trains sit on old platforms and you can step in and out of carriages.

More photos of my brass locomotive collection - a model of the M-10000 Union Pacific Streamlined Unit train from the 1930's. This factory painted brass model was imported by AHM in the 1960's or '70s and has a motor in the front and rear cars. AHM imported many brass models, but, they are best known for importing Italian made Rivarossi plastic steam engines from the 1960's until the 1980's.

This former Illinois Central observation car was on stored on a siding waiting to be transferred to a private owner in Tampa, Florida, 1973. This car appears to have been built by the Pullman Company as a smooth side, welded steel, streamlined, lightweight observation car. This location is a few blocks to the West of Tampa Union station. The old car appears to be in fairly good shape with only a small amount of rust, but has quite a bit of pealing paint and some broken windows that are boarded up.

A circular, streamlined, bakelite box, made in the 1930's. It was made by the American Insulator Corporation, and used either as a cigarette or jewelry box. (This information was discovered in an old plastic's advertisement).

 

It can also be seen on page 42 of the Keresztury's book, "Art Deco Bakelite and Jewelry Boxes." I also have this same box in a dark brown bakelite.

The streamlined 4-8-2 "Mountain" steam engine & it's five car train is painted in distinctive reddish brown hue. The train is named 909 National Limited.

 

The loco was inspired by the South Australian Railways 520 class 4-8-4 and the hover mono-rail engine from the Legend of Korra TV Show, while the train coaches were inspired by a vintage 2009 LEGO model of "Galaxy Express 999". (Link to Brickshelf: www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=374748 ) The real story behind the of the name 909 Limited is a combination of this fantasy train and the Beatles song "One after 909", which is sort-of about a train.

Norfolk Southern operated N&W J-class 4-8-4 Northern steam locomotive # 611, with railfan excursion train is seen as it passes through a yard on it's return trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee, November 1989. A smooth side all steel streamlined baggage car follows the water canteen car, with it being followed by a Budd stainless steel lightweight P&B and the heavyweight dinner "Travelers Fare," owned by the TVRRM. This car has been semi-streamlined and is a modernized heavyweight car that includes thermopane windows, turtle back roof and roller bearings along with modernized A/C equipment plus other internal interior improvements.

Often considered the last of the great traditional Pony Cars before the 80's brought in either blandness or a more streamlined 'Japanese' look, the Camaro Z28 of 1970 was one of the longest running Pony Car generations in automotive history, with a production life of 11 years over which very little in the design changed.

 

Dubbed 'Super Hugger', the 2nd generation Camaro was developed without the drawback of haste, unlike the original Camaro that was rushed to the showrooms to ward off the Ford Mustang. In addition, a greater budget was also available to the new Camaro as the rewards were reaped for the original's immediate success.

 

Although it was an all-new car, the basic mechanical layout of the new Camaro was familiar, engineered much like its predecessor with a unibody structure utilizing a front subframe, A-arm and coil spring front suspension, and rear leaf springs. The chassis and suspension of the second generation were greatly refined in both performance and comfort; base models offered significant advances in sound-proofing, ride isolation, and road-holding. Extensive experience Chevrolet engineers had gained racing the first-generation led directly to advances in second-generation Camaro steering, braking, and balance.

 

The original Camaro of 1970 was powered by a 4.1L Straight-Six engine which produced 155hp. However, a mixture of the oil crisis and legislative change to reduce emissions meant that the compromises had to begin in earnest. The first major change came in 1974 with alterations to the external styling, which brought the headlights inboard. This was followed by another major change in 1978, with colour coded bumpers being added and a new engine which came in the form of a 5.7L V8 which produced 185hp. Prior to this, a Catalytic Converter had been added to the 1975 along with many other tweaks and changes internally that made the cars more reliable and miles between maintenance increased, all being placed under the aptly named "Chevrolet's new Efficiency System."

 

This particular version is a 1980 model, which shows many of the changes made during the 1979 model year that truly brought this car into the style of the late-70's. The biggest changes for 1979 were the introduction of the luxury-oriented Berlinetta model, replacing the Type LT, and a restyled instrument panel with a much flatter appearance than the previous wraparound design. The base models, RS and Z28 remained, the Z28's now came with a front spoiler and fender flares much like its Pontiac Trans Am twin had, and now came with "Z28" decals that ran from the beginning of the front flares to the bottoms of the doors. Electric rear window defroster became optional this year, replacing the old blower type.

 

Sales for 1979 were the highest ever for any generation Camaro before or since, numbering 282,571 units. These cars came with the base engine of a 4.4L V8 engine producing 120hp, although a limited edition 5.7L V8 was also available for 1980 model year.

 

By 1981 though the gig was up for the 1970 Camaro, it's style starting to look quite tired and increasing legislation on emissions labouring it heavily. The 1981 model was fitted for the first time with a CCC (Computer Command Control) unit, and minor tweaks to the styling and engine were carried out, largely to reduce the horsepower of the hungry V8 to comply with demands.

 

Eventually the 2nd Generation Camaro met its end in 1981, being replaced by the Camaro of 1982 which took on a much more radical and somewhat Japanese style. Although many Camaro fans recoiled at the comparatively mundane looking car, at least General Motors got it right, still giving the machine a raunchy personality as well as a powerful 5.0L V8, unlike what was going on at Ford where the Mustang of 1984 was intended to be based on a Mazda, to which enthusiasts recoiled!

 

Today this generation of the Camaro has become a monster hit in the retro Pony Car Classics, being tough, reliable but also incredibly well styled, retaining the basic ingredients that made it such a motoring icon of the early 70's. Many believe that this particular version after 1979 was when the car was at its peak, mixing style with substance even in the face of legislative adversity.

 

From what my American friends tell me, much like old Mustangs and Pontiacs, you can pick up these cars for apparently next to nothing in the USA, and are often the first cars teenagers drive after they pass their test!

 

If only that were so here in the UK!

1933 Marvels of the Auto Speed World

 

Great things are stirring in the speed world! Streamlined race cars, modified stock car speed creations, incredibly fast custom-built racers for assaults against time, are all parts of the changing picture of the most heart-gripping, thrilling sport in the world today—auto racing!

WITH a new automobile speed record of 273 miles an hour recently established by Malcolm Campbell, the internationally famous British speed king, and with several new speed creations along novel lines being groomed for entry in the forthcoming Memorial Day racing classic at Indianapolis, 1933 seems destined to be written down large in speedway history.

 

Just how extensive has been the influence of such ultra-speed cars as Campbell’s Blue Bird, Segrave’s Golden Arrow, and Kaye Don’s Silver Bullet, can be learned from a study of the pictures which accompany this article. On the opposite page is the latest creation of Harry Hartz, American speed pilot, which he calls “The Spirit of ’76.”

 

This name derives out of the fact that Hartz is going after Malcolm Campbell’s speed record with the intention of restoring the record to American hands. Several well known automotive engineers are behind Hartz in his effort. Trials will be conducted at Muroc Dry Lake in California.

 

Particular features of “The Spirit of ’76” are the streamlined body, the small radiator opening, the use of a vertical fin to stabilize steering control, and the top enclosure of half the cockpit opposite the driver to offer as slight air resistance as possible.

 

Much smaller in all dimensions than the Blue Bird, Hartz believes that his creation has an excellent chance to better Campbell’s record because the car is built to do just that one thing. It is much better streamlined than the Blue Bird, and has considerably less weight to push.

 

Because of its wide departure from A.A.A. specifications for speedway racers, it is unlikely that the Hartz machine will take part in the 500-mile Indianapolis race. But unquestionably it foreshadows the trend of race car development.

 

Three Types of Racing

 

Auto racing as it now stands falls into three general classes—races of custom-built superspeed cars against time (such as Campbell’s Blue Bird, which develops such terrific speeds that it would be suicidal to race a companion car simultaneously on the same track); races such as the Memorial Day classic, on speedways whose car specifications are rigidly specified by racing associations; and dirt track racing—likewise

 

controlled, to a certain degree, by associations, but allowing much more latitude to the individual driver.

 

In this latter field modified stock car racing is at present enjoying much popularity. Usually the races are run on a percentage basis, 40% of the gate receipts being appropriated as prizes. Stock car racing gives the amateur driver a chance to demonstrate his ability, and it is from these races that owners of high-priced racing cars pick the drivers to pilot their machines on the big-time speedways.

 

Modified Stock Car Races

 

Are modified stock cars fast? They most decidedly are. At Funk’s Motor Speedway, Winchester, Indiana, the fastest half-mile dirt track in the country, a Model A 1929 Ford turned one lap just under 26 seconds. Plenty of big time race cars can’t turn in as flashy a performance on the same track.

 

Certain well known machines are specially suited for modified stock car racing: Fords (Models A, T, and V8), four and six-cylinder Chevrolets, Plymouths, DeSotos, and Studebakers. Pontiacs also are adaptable.

 

Since this type of race gives the amateur his best chance, requiring nothing very expensive in the way of equipment, a few details will be given. On the morning of the race day stock cars must qualify for their positions in the race. Usually the ten fastest cars are allowed in the main event, the slower ones in a consolation race which gives them a chance to win some money to defray traveling expenses.

 

Two 10-mile sprints and a 20 or 30-mile feature race usually comprise the program, with a stunt such as a blindfold race occasionally added. In the latter the driver has a black hood completely covering his head, and he steers his race car entirely by sense of feel—that is, he is so familiar with the race track layout, and can sense position so accurately from the banked turns, that vision is unnecessary. When two blindfold drivers start tearing around the track at the same time, the roaring crowd realizes that it’s looking on a real thrill treat.

 

A white flag is used to start the regular race. The green flag means the driver is starting the last lap, and the checkered flag is the one the boys all hope for, signifying a winner.

 

Conduct of Dirt Track Races

 

When starting a race the drivers are lined up in the order they qualified for. The fastest qualifying car is the pole car, which leads the pack around the track until they are lined up for a flying start. The first lap is the most dangerous, as each driver strives to get into the turn first. After this lap they scatter out and the nerve tension of the drivers is somewhat relaxed.

 

In modifying stock cars for racing, all fenders, headlights, windshields, tops, and other parts that would cause resistance are removed. Beyond this, procedure varies with each model car. Valve ports of the engine are usually bored out, special valves and aluminum racing pistons installed, high compression obtained through use of special heads, and downdraft carburetor and oversize manifold added.

 

Ignition systems usually require some changes. Every driver knows that the magneto system is faster than the usual battery type. A special racing coil, which has a double winding with 30,000 turns, is usually used in conjunction with the double-breaker Mallory distributor. This combination generates a very hot and fast spark which requires a special metric racing spark plug to withstand it.

 

Special fuels are, of course, required to get the most out of the cars. High test gasoline would burn up the valves, so a special dope is added to regular gas.

 

Modified stock car racing has penetrated to all parts of the world. The Grand Prix Race at Stockholm, Sweden, traveling over mountains, frozen lakes, and dangerous passages, is run with stock cars. Even in far away Madagascar, an island off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean, modified stock car races are held.

American Freedom Train steam locomotive # X4449, Southern Pacific semi-streamlined oil burning GS-4 class LIMA built 4-8-4 Northern, is seen along with it's display train at the Uceta Railroad Yard & Shop Complex on a foggy night in Tampa, Florida, 1976. The locomotive's tender and auxiliary tender are being replenished with water and you can see the hoses being used in the background. After spending some time in the yard for service and maintenance, the train will shortly depart to continue on it historical display trip. This locomotive and display train is operating on SCL rail lines in most of Florida.

An enjoyable and mammoth nine hours spent on the East Coast Mainline today, in excellent company and with a huge variety of rolling stock. The main attraction being the 'Gresley' Class A4 Pacific Streamlined 4-6-2 locomotive. This is actually 60019 'Bittern' in disguise, re-painted in the LNER blue, and named 'Dominion Of New Zealand'. As well as this, she is carrying a second tender, which apparently belongs to 4472 'Flying Scotsman'.

DRG Class 05 streamlined 4-6-4T No.05 001 (Borsig No.14552 of 1935) in its beautiful deep red livery at the DB Museum, Nurnberg, 10 May 2016. Two Class 05's were built by Borsig (Berlin-Tegel works) in 1935 and one cab-forward version in 1937 by Borsig (Hennigsdorf works). They had 7'6.5" wheels. No.05 002 attained the world speed record in 1935 at 119.1 mph and again in 1936 at 124.5 mph, with an output of 3,400 ihp. This loco also holds the non-stop record for steam when it did 70.1 mls (Wittenberge - Berlin Spandau) in 48 mins at an average speed of 86.66 mph. Krauss-Maffei rebuilt them in 1950-51 without streamlining and they hauled the 'Hanseat' and 'Domspatz' on the Hamburg - Koln - Frankfurt service of 703 km (436.8 miles), the longest German steam hauled service. There is an 'urban myth' that at the end of WWII British troops found DR documents which revealed that, on the eve of the war, one of the Class 05's built Mallard's world speed record but that was never publicised because of the immediate break out of war. In order to retain Mallard's record, the troops - which included some railway enthusiasts - allegedly destroyed the records! How true this is will never be known but the abilities of the 05's should not be underestinated. And after 05 002's high speed runs, it was in normal service the next day in contrast to Mallard's record run which destroyed it's inside valve gear!

The American Freedom Train was being lead by Southern Pacific steam locomotive # 4449, a GS-4 class Northern, on a large portion of its trip around the United States. The steam locomotive in this view was located at the SCL Uceta Railroad Yard in Tampa, Florida, December 1976, after arriving from Orlando. Later in the morning the train departed Tampa for the remainder of it's historic display tour trip in Florida. The night was foggy which helped to provide a late feel to the photo. The locomotive & tender was painted in a red, white & blue paint scheme for the AFT. The locomotive was a semi-streamlined, modern, powerful, high speed, oil burning, booster equiped steam locomotive built by Lima Locomotive Works during 1941.

DC Transit pre-PCC streamlined streetcar, National Capital Trolley Museum. Part of a 20-car order in 1935, split between Brill and St Louis Car Company. Sadly this car was lost to a carbarn fire at the museum in 2003.

The iconic, streamlined profile of the Intercity Swallow livery can be seen here in all its glory as 43102 'The Journey Shrinker 148.5MPH The Worlds Fastest Diesel Train' flies towards Melton Mowbray with the late running 5M17 St Pancras International - St Pancras International EMR route learning run. 43295 was out of sight on the rear. The location is Kirby Bellars, 30th March 2021.

The Gresley A4 Pacifics were a class of streamlined 4-6-2 steam locomotive designed by Nigel Gresley for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) and introduced in 1935. Their streamlined design gave them a high-speed capability, as well as making them instantly recognisable, and one of the class, 4468 'Mallard', holds the world speed record of 126 mph for a steam locomotive. Thirty-five of the class were built to haul express passenger trains on the East Coast Main Line (ECML) route from London Kings Cross via York to Newcastle, and later to Edinburgh. They remained in service on the ECML until the early 1960s, when they were replaced by the Deltics. Some of the A4s saw out their remaining days until 1966 in Scotland, particularly on the Aberdeen - Glasgow route.

 

Names - the first four locomotives built included the word 'silver' in their names because they were intended to haul the Silver Jubilee train. 2512 'Silver Fox' of this batch carried a stainless-steel fox near the centre of the streamline casing on each side, made by the Sheffield steelmakers Samuel Fox and Company. The next batch of A4s were named after birds, particularly those that were fast flyers, Gresley being a keen bird-watcher. Five of the class (4488–92) were named after British Empire countries to haul the new Anglo-Scottish Coronation train, and two (4495/6), intended to haul the new West Riding Limited, received names connected to the wool trade - 'Golden Fleece' and 'Golden Shuttle'. 4498 was the hundredth Gresley Pacific to be built, and was appropriately named after him. Subsequently, some other A4s were later renamed, usually to names of directors of the LNER.

 

Withdrawals - one locomotive, No. 4469 'Sir Ralph Wedgwood', was withdrawn and scrapped after being damaged beyond repair in a German bombing raid on York on 29 April 1942 during World War Two. The next five withdrawals, in Dec 1962, were: 60003 'Andrew K. McCosh', 60014 'Silver Link', 60028 'Walter K. Whigham', 60030 'Golden Fleece' and 60033 'Seagull'. The rest of the class was withdrawn between 1963 and 1966. The last six in service were: 60004 'William Whitelaw', 60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley', 60009 'Union of South Africa', 60019 'Bittern', 60024 'Kingfisher' and 60034 'Lord Faringdon'.

 

Preservation - six of the 35 locomotives were been preserved, four of which are based in the UK and have run on the BR main line at some point during their preservation career. Another two 'Dominion of Canada' and 'Dwight D. Eisenhower' were exported to museums in Canada and the US respectively, upon withdrawal by British Railways. During 2013, 4464 'Bittern' underwent a series of high-speed runs, partly in commemoration of Mallard's record, partly to see if mainline speeds for certain heritage steam locomotives could be increased (The current maximum is 75 mph). During the "Tyne Tees Streak" run, Bittern broke its own 91 mph speed record set just a few months prior by reaching a maximum speed of 93 mph (149.7 km/h).

 

From 2015 to 2020, 60009 'Union of South Africa' was the only A4 operational with a valid mainline certificate until it expired in 2020; 60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley' was withdrawn for overhaul on 20 Sep 2015 and 4464 'Bittern' operated until the end of 2015 at the Watercress Line, when it was withdrawn and placed on static display in 2018 at Crewe. 60009 'Union of South Africa' was withdrawn in Oct 2021 due to boiler issues, and with the coming expiration of its boiler certificate in early 2022. 60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley' finally returned to the mainline on 21 Apr 2022 following the completion of its major overhaul. Locomotive history - 4489 'Woodcock' The locomotive was built in Doncaster works in May 1937 as Works Number 1854. It was originally to be named 'Buzzard' but initially received the name 'Woodcock' instead until it was renamed 'Dominion of Canada' by High Commissioner of Canada, H. Vincent Massey on 15 June 1937. No. 4489 underwent trials, the only one of the 'Coronation' A4s so treated, and left in works grey lined in white. It had apple green painted coupled wheels. At this point it wore the name Woodcock, but this was removed before final painting and release to traffic. The Canadian Pacific Railway issue whistle was fitted 15 July 1937 for the unveiling and naming. The CPR-type bell fitted was steam operated and was actually used, as a photograph from 19 August 1939, illustrates. In 1937, locomotive 4489 was the locomotive used to try and take back the speed record previously taken by the LMS' passenger train, the Coronation Scot, which clocked at 114 mph (183 km/h). 4489 achieved 109.5 mph (176 km/h) down Stoke Bank. It suffered damage in a collision at Hatfield and required attention at Doncaster Works from 31 January to 18 March 1939. Allocated to Kings Cross from new, it was reallocated to Grantham on 7 April 1957. The next shed was Kings Cross again on 15 September 1957. New England was the next allocation on 16 June 1963, after the closure of Kings Cross. The final allocation was to Aberdeen on 20 October 1963 to be used, along with other displaced A4s, primarily for the three-hour Aberdeen to Glasgow express service. Locomotive history - 4496 'Golden Shuttle' was built by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) in 1937 at Doncaster Works. It was renamed Dwight D. Eisenhower after World War II and renumbered 8 on 23 November 1946, under Edward Thompson's LNER 1946 renumbering scheme. After nationalisation in 1948, British Railways renumbered it 60008 on 29 October 1948. It was retired from service in 1963 and was moved to the National Railroad Museum in Ashwaubenon, a suburb of Green Bay, Wisconsin, United States, where it is currently on display. It returned to England in 2012 for display at the National Railway Museum in York, when all surviving A4s were reunited. It returned to Green Bay in 2014. These are a few Streamlined and Semi-streamlined steam locomotives in HO scale. All are brass, except the two British LNER locomotives. Chicago and Northwestern RR (CNW) Class E-4 4-6-4 by Kumata for Nickel Plate Products.

Built in 1935-1939, this Modern house, an example of Organic Architecture, was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the family of department store owner Edgar J. Kaufmann, Sr. to serve as a weekend retreat. The house was a catalyst for the revitalization of Frank Lloyd Wright’s career, who was in his mid-60s at the time, along with two other commissions around the same time, the Johnson Wax Headquarters and the Jacobs House I, which were critically acclaimed and explored a bold new direction of organic architecture that was heavily inspired from their natural surroundings, and were streamlined, dropping most of the ornamental pretenses of his earlier work. The house was built for department store owner Edgar J. Kaufmann, Sr., his wife, Liliane Kaufmann, and their only son, Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., to serve as the family’s weekend retreat, with room to accommodate a small staff and guests alongside the family. The Kaufmann family became acquainted with the work of Wright through Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., who read Frank Lloyd Wright’s autobiography in 1934, and was so impressed that he decided to intern at the Taliesin Fellowship, where Edgar, Sr. and Liliane first met Wright while visiting Edgar, Jr. The family, at the time, resided in a traditional-style mansion in Fox Chapel, near Pittsburgh, and had a small rustic cabin overlooking the waterfall at the Fallingwater site. The cabins were falling into disrepair in the mid-1930s, which prompted the Kaufmann family to contact Wright to design a replacement structure. Wright visited and surveyed the area around Bear Run in 1934, but shelved the project while pursuing other work for the next few months, thinking through the design, before being surprised by a visit from Edgar J. Kaufmann, Sr. in September 1935, which prompted Wright to quickly draw a concept for a house at Bear Run, producing the initial design drawings in two hours. Edgar, Sr., upon seeing the plans, was surprised to see the house soaring above the waterfall, as he had expected it to sit below the falls in order to view them from a distance, but Wright’s charisma convinced a skeptical Kaufmann to buy into the concept.

 

The house was designed by Wright with input from structural engineers Mendel Glickman and William Wesley Peters to feature large cantilevers, which allowed it to embrace the waterfall and topography below, while providing ample outdoor space and the desired number of bedrooms and living spaces within. A second wing was constructed above the main house, linked to it via a covered breezeway, which houses a carport, servants quarters, and a guest suite. The stone utilized in the house’s construction was quarried on the site, and it utilized reinforced concrete in its construction, a building technique with which Wright was inexperienced, but which the design would be impossible to implement without utilizing. Kaufmann was skeptical of Wright’s experience with the technique, as well as the cantilevered forms of the structure, and commissioned an engineering report, compiled by an engineering firm, which caused Wright to threaten to walk away from the incomplete project. Kaufmann relented in the face of Wright’s ultimatum, and had the documents buried. However, the contractor, feeling uneasy about the strength of Wright’s design, added extra reinforcement in secret, which was revealed during the building’s restoration. Other changes were made due to skepticism of the cantilevered design, but many of these were reversed, which proved the resiliency and strength of the design. The house came in far over budget, but despite these cost overruns and complications with the design, the Kaufmann family enjoyed it as a weekend retreat between 1937 and 1963. Liliane Kaufmann died in 1952, and Edgar Kaufmann, Sr. died in 1955, leaving the house to their son, Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., who continued to utilize the house as a weekend retreat, with his life partner, Paul Mayén, becoming a regular visitor to the house as well. In 1963, Edgar, Jr. donated the property to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, along with the surrounding property, which was converted into a nature reserve, and the house was opened for public tours.

 

The house features multiple reinforced concrete cantilevers, wrap-around windows facing the falls and Bear Run, open, transparent corners on the side of the building facing the creek, stone cladding on the more opaque portions of the facade, large terraces on the cantilevered portions of the building, open tread staircases inside and outside the building, red metal trim, a suspended concrete canopy over the breezeway connecting the guest wing and carport with the main house, a swimming pool on the terrace outside the guest wing, rocks embedded into the floors of the interior of the house, a staircase from the living room down to Bear Run below, and red concrete floors inside. A driveway, following Bear Run, crosses a bridge next to the main wing of the house before following a narrow corridor between the main wing and an adjacent stone outcropping, before turning and arriving at the upper wing, which originally housed a four-bay carport on the lower floor. The interior of the house is very open to the exterior, with low furnishings that allow for maximization of the views out of the windows, and is home to art that was collected by Liliane, books collected by Edgar, Jr. and Paul, and furnishings collected by Edgar, Sr. The house’s kitchen features yellow-painted metal cabinets and appliances, and chrome handles, the living room features a fireplace with a spherical beverage warmer that is designed to swing over to the fireplace from its storage location next to the fireplace and coffered ceilings, and horizontal bands of trim, and various portions of the house feature built-in desks, cabinets, wooden slat screens, and bookshelves, simple beds featuring wooden headboards and nightstands in the bedrooms, and bathrooms with cork tiles, sunken bathtubs, ceiling-mounted shower heads, and toilets with wall-embedded tanks. The upper wing of the house has a carport and guest suite on the lower floor, with servants quarters above, and the main house features a living room, dining room, kitchen, terraces and lounge on the first floor, a primary suite and secondary bedroom and bathroom with large terraces on the second floor, and a suite intended for Edgar, Jr. on the third floor, which was later partially converted into an office. The house is very broad in the direction parallel to Bear Run and has a living room that cantilevers over the creek, but it is very thin, being rather thin, with primary interior spaces featuring windows that look out onto Bear Run below. The house, despite its size appearing massive due to its spatial arrangement, has only a small interior square footage, but the space is efficiently designed to offer maximum utility to the occupants, and allow a close connection with nature.

 

The house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It was designated as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, The 20th-Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, in 2019. A visitor center was constructed on the property in 1977-1979, designed by Paul Mayen. The most visible modification to the house since it was opened to the public were the enclosure of three carport bays to house a museum and presentation space for visitors. The house underwent major alterations to its structural systems in 1995-2002, involving analyzing the performance of the cantilevers over time since the house’s construction, as the bold cantilevered forms had insufficient reinforcement and had deflected substantially, nearing their failure points. Additional steel supports and post-tensioning in the form of steel cables were added to the building to support the cantilevers, which has halted the progression of the deflection of the structure, though it is monitored by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy in order to detect any further movement of the structure. The house today sees over one-hundred thousand visitors annually, and is one of the most well-known works of Wright, as well as being one of the best-known houses in the United States.

Built in 1946, this was originally the Ferman Oldsmobile car dealership in downtown Tampa, and is now a small parking garage. Located at 401 E Washington St at Florida Ave, just south of the Suntrust building. Too bad the windows are boarded over... looked much better in this 1948 Burgert Bros. photo.
