The Shape of Speed

Streamlined Automobiles and Motorcycles, 1930–1942

JUN 16 – SEP 16, 2018

Portland Art Museum

The Portland Art Museum is pleased to announce The Shape of Speed: Streamlined Automobiles and Motorcycles, 1930–1942, a special exhibition debuting at the Museum in Summer 2018. Featuring 19 rare streamlined automobiles and motorcycles, The Shape of Speed opens June 16 and will be on view through September 16, 2018.

The concept of streamlining has fascinated people for generations. Beginning in the 1930s and extending until the outbreak of the World War II, automotive designers embraced the challenge of styling and building truly streamlined cars that were fast and fuel-efficient. They were encouraged by the confluence of aircraft design with the sleek shapes of fast railroad locomotives; new advanced highways such as the Autobahns; and events like the 1939 New York City World’s Fair, which showcased futuristic design.

The Shape of Speed presents a select group of rare automobiles and motorcycles that demonstrate how auto designers translated the concept of aerodynamic efficiency into exciting machines that in many cases, looked as though they were moving while at rest.

The Museum will display 17 cars and two motorcycles—the best of that era’s streamlined offerings—from Europe and the United States. Engineering drawings and period photographs will show some of the aircraft, railroad, ship and yacht designs that influenced the automakers.

Featured designers and engineers include European streamlining pioneer Paul Jaray, along with Richard Buckminster Fuller, Norman Bel Geddes, Raymond Loewy, Harley J. Earl, Hermann Ahrens, Georges Paulin, Joseph Figoni, Dr. Wunibald Kamm, Otto Kuhler, Jean Bugatti, Hans Ledwinka, Gordon Buehrig, and others.

Jalan Asia Africa | Savoy Homann Bidakara Hotel 04/036/2011 08h42

Not our hotel but an art deco landmark of the city of Bandung.

Savoy Homann Bidakara Hotel

The Savoy Homann Bidakara Hotel is a historic luxury four stars hotel located on Asia Afrika Street, Bandung, Indonesia. It was built in 1939 replacing the 19th century Homann Hotel. Designed by the Dutch architect Albert Aalbers, the hotel features art deco exterior and interior, and historic furniture. It is an architectural heritage and a fine example of art deco colonial architecture of the East Indies.

After the opening of the Great Post Road in 1810, many colonial cash-crop plantations were established in the Preanger area. During the 19th to early 20th century Bandung has become a popular business, shopping and leisure destination for wealthy plantation owners, in particular in the weekends. As a result the hotel business was blooming in the city. The predecessor of the present hotel, the Homann Hotel was built in 1871–72, owned and managed by the Homann family. It was famous for its delicious Mrs. Homann's Rijsttafel. This first small building was designed in Gothic-Romantic style. In 1939, the hotel was rebuilt in a curved streamlined art deco style, designed by the architect Albert Aalbers. To emphasize its grandeur and luxury the name "Savoy" was added in the 1940s, which remained unchanged until the 1980s. Some of its celebrity guests during the Dutch East Indies era were Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford.

During the World War II Japanese occupation (1942–45), the hotel functioned as luxurious barracks for Japanese soldiers. In 1955, when the first Asian–African Conference was held in Bandung, Savoy Homann hosted VVIP guests and became a part of the Historical Walk. Some of the guests were Soekarno, Ho Chi Minh, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, U Nu, Zhou Enlai, Gamal Abdul Nasser, and Tito.

In the 1990s the hotel was renovated and a new wing was added. Today the hotel was bought under the management of Bidakara Group, thus the name changed to Savoy Homann Bidakara Hotel.

Tram Blackpool English Electic Railcoach 680

Wikipedia description

The English Electric Railcoach cars were 45 streamlined enclosed single deck trams built by English Electric between 1933-1935. They were numbered 200-224 and 264-283. None of these remained in their original form, with 10 cars (272-281) rebuilt as towing cars for the Progress Twin Set cars in the 1950s and 1960s, 2 cars rebuilt as illuminated cars in the 1960s (209 as the Western Train Locomotive and 222 as the Hovertram), No. 264 rebuilt in 1964 with flat cab-ends and rounded corners, No. 618 (271) rebuilt in 1968 with tapered cab-ends and the last 11 surviving cars as well as Nos. 264 and 618 (220-221, 224, 264-271 and 282-283) rebuilt as the One-Man Operated (OMO) cars in the 1970s. The other 20 cars were scrapped.

English Electric Railcoach car No. 264 was rebuilt in 1964 with flat cab-ends and rounded corners, resembling the Coronation cars and the Twin Set cars. No. 264 was also given exterior plastic panelling to reduce its weight, but was returned to aluminium panelling due the plastic warping and becoming discoloured. No. 264 became No. 611 in 1968. English Electric Railcoach car No. 618 was rebuilt in 1968 with tapered cab-ends, increasing its capacity from 48 to 56. Prior to being rebuilt as the OMO cars, the last 11 cars remaining in their original form, as well as Nos. 264 and 618 (271) were renumbered in 1968: 220-221 became 608-609, 224 became 610, 264-271 became 611-618 and 282-283 became 619-620.

The former Twin Set towing cars 678–680 (278-280) were converted back to single trams with cabs at both ends. English Electric Railcoach tram No. 679 was given an all-over advert for Mecca Bingo in 1994, which featured two big fibreglass bears fitted to the roof, with one on each end. The advert and fibreglass bears were removed in 1995. The last of these in the active fleet, No. 680, was withdrawn in 2008. 678 was preserved by Fleetwood Heritage Leisure Trust in 2011. 679 was preserved by the Lancastrian Transport Trust until 2013, when it joined the retained heritage fleet in Blackpool and will eventually be restored into original condition and regain its original pre-1968 number of 279. 680 was preserved at the Heaton Park Tramway in Manchester in 2011. During December 2013, 680 was transferred to Beamish Museum for an operational loan deal and entered service there. In April 2015, No. 680 was transferred to its permanent home at Heaton Park Tramway and entered service there. In August 2015, No. 680 was transferred to Blackpool for an initial 2-year loan and was repainted into 1990s green and cream livery with black window surrounds.

As in Britain, the streamlined and Art Deco styles seem particularly associated in America with coastal places and seaside resorts. The tradition is continued and one is sometimes taken in, at first sight, by what appears to be a genuine building of the period that proves, upon closer inspection, to be of recent construction. I'm not sure about this one. Streamlined above but rather angular below. At the sides there is quite a bit of unadorned (apart from a coat of whitewash) concrete where, in a recent structure, one would probably find some sort of cladding. There is a little light distress in some of the less publicly visible parts and the building must surely be some decades old. The business was established in 1939, according to its website, but there are several sites dotted around Ocean City, Maryland, and this one doesn't seem to be illustrated. I'm not big on ice cream myself, especially in the obscene, marshmallow-impregnated, caramel sauce and sprinkle-topped amounts served in America. I mean ...you can feel your life expectancy decreasing as you eat. I didn't sample the wares. I love all these parking lot-surrounded "outlets", that line American highways in the vicinity of every town.

This Art Deco-styled 4-6-4 steam loco is to be numbered 5447 and is sort-of modeled after a real, long-scrapped New York Central engine. The tender really should say the railroad's full name instead of its initials, but I don't want to shell out the money for all those 1 x 1 tiles, so I'm using fewer 2x2 tiles instead to spell out NYC, as it's much cheaper that way!

You may have also noticed I've also placed older 9v-era couplers on the loco and tender, as my dad has the 20-year old Santa Fe Super Chief car that (I'm hoping!) he'll let me eventually display with my loco at Gateway LUG shows. If that doesn't work out, I'll build a bunch of coal hoppers and have it placed about to demolish my Iron Giant, like in the animated film!

Note: As some of you might be able to guess, this loco was inspired by pictures of Anthony Sava's original streamlined Hudson locomotive from 2007... no instructions were used to build this engine. See it here: www.flickr.com/photos/savatheaggie/1338258406/in/album-72...

The original Minx was announced in October 1931 to a conservative design with a pressed-steel body on separate chassis and 30 bhp 1185 cc engine, It was upgraded with a four-speed transmission in 1934 and a styling upgrade, most noticeably a slightly V-shaped grille. For 1935 the range was similar except that synchromesh was added to all forward gears and this Minx became the first mass-produced car with an all synchromesh gearbox designed by by Captain John Samuel Irving The 1936 model had a new name, the Minx Magnificent, and a restyle with a much more rounded body. The chassis was stiffened and the engine moved forwards to give more passenger room. The rear panel, previously vertical, was now set at a sloping angle, and the manufacturers offered the option of a folding luggage grid attached to the rear panel

The Streamlined Saloon was available via the main dealerships priced at £ 245

4000 S-4-A was rebuilt from 3002 in 1937. With increased operation of streamlined trains The "Q"convert one of rebuilt hudson the 4000 into a streamlined shroud and name the engine after a Greek God Aeolus keeper of the winds. Today 4000 on display @ LaCross Wis.

The streamlined, aerodynamic Chrysler Airflow, introduced for the 1934 model year, took wind-cheating design beyond what others had been experimenting with and introduced a raft of other innovative design features as well. Chrysler's attempt to jump ahead of the competition was such a dismal failure in the market that the company's designs became conservative for two more decades.

While most automakers of the day still used wood-reinforced metal bodies on a separate steel frame, the Airflow was a unit body design with a full steel body. The conventional inline eight was forward over the front axle allowing for more interior room and a near 50/50 weight distribution.

The Airflow was ahead of its time in use of aerodynamics, unibody design and many other innovations but it also suffered from major defects that affected reliability. Sales were dismal, though the Airflow models, including a DeSoto, lasted until 1937.

4. DE HIGH TECH VUINISBAK MAAKTE PER ONGELUK EEN GEVANGENE. DIE ZIT NU KLEM IN HET SYSTEEM.

Hoe kunnen mensen zo DWAAS zijn? Klem raken in hun vuilnisbak?

Moeten we later per zak gaan betalen?

Of platstampen? Zagen?

Graag afspraak over twee? - vier? - weken.

4. THE HIGH TECH GARBAGECONTAINER MADE A PRISONER. ACCIDENTALLY OFCOURSE.

How can people be so FOOLISH? To become prisoner of their garbage container?

It is such a clever new high tech system.

But they manage to bow over the container while it closes..The container closes on their garbage bag and - with bad luck - also on the chip card that hangs on this chain around their neck.

So they can not open their container.

They have no chip card to open the container anymore. This card is inside the container.

With bad luck their head is too big to escape. They need help of course.

A perfect system that functions with fools...

But..why not a container with a simple lid that you can open with one hand?

Is there a logical reason for this complex and expensive HIGH TECH garbage chip card system?

Who knows? During some years it is placed in the streets of several cities now. See in the comments below a link to a better design - with flowers - published in 2011 by a Dutch student (Tim Janssen) of the Technological University, Delft, Holland. A more simple design is also possible.

1933 Marvels of the Auto Speed World

Great things are stirring in the speed world! Streamlined race cars, modified stock car speed creations, incredibly fast custom-built racers for assaults against time, are all parts of the changing picture of the most heart-gripping, thrilling sport in the world today—auto racing!

by ROBERT M. ROOF and LEW HOLT

WITH a new automobile speed record of 273 miles an hour recently established by Malcolm Campbell, the internationally famous British speed king, and with several new speed creations along novel lines being groomed for entry in the forthcoming Memorial Day racing classic at Indianapolis, 1933 seems destined to be written down large in speedway history.

Just how extensive has been the influence of such ultra-speed cars as Campbell’s Blue Bird, Segrave’s Golden Arrow, and Kaye Don’s Silver Bullet, can be learned from a study of the pictures which accompany this article. On the opposite page is the latest creation of Harry Hartz, American speed pilot, which he calls “The Spirit of ’76.”

This name derives out of the fact that Hartz is going after Malcolm Campbell’s speed record with the intention of restoring the record to American hands. Several well known automotive engineers are behind Hartz in his effort. Trials will be conducted at Muroc Dry Lake in California.

Particular features of “The Spirit of ’76” are the streamlined body, the small radiator opening, the use of a vertical fin to stabilize steering control, and the top enclosure of half the cockpit opposite the driver to offer as slight air resistance as possible.

Much smaller in all dimensions than the Blue Bird, Hartz believes that his creation has an excellent chance to better Campbell’s record because the car is built to do just that one thing. It is much better streamlined than the Blue Bird, and has considerably less weight to push.

Because of its wide departure from A.A.A. specifications for speedway racers, it is unlikely that the Hartz machine will take part in the 500-mile Indianapolis race. But unquestionably it foreshadows the trend of race car development.

Three Types of Racing

Auto racing as it now stands falls into three general classes—races of custom-built superspeed cars against time (such as Campbell’s Blue Bird, which develops such terrific speeds that it would be suicidal to race a companion car simultaneously on the same track); races such as the Memorial Day classic, on speedways whose car specifications are rigidly specified by racing associations; and dirt track racing—likewise

controlled, to a certain degree, by associations, but allowing much more latitude to the individual driver.

In this latter field modified stock car racing is at present enjoying much popularity. Usually the races are run on a percentage basis, 40% of the gate receipts being appropriated as prizes. Stock car racing gives the amateur driver a chance to demonstrate his ability, and it is from these races that owners of high-priced racing cars pick the drivers to pilot their machines on the big-time speedways.

Modified Stock Car Races

Are modified stock cars fast? They most decidedly are. At Funk’s Motor Speedway, Winchester, Indiana, the fastest half-mile dirt track in the country, a Model A 1929 Ford turned one lap just under 26 seconds. Plenty of big time race cars can’t turn in as flashy a performance on the same track.

Certain well known machines are specially suited for modified stock car racing: Fords (Models A, T, and V8), four and six-cylinder Chevrolets, Plymouths, DeSotos, and Studebakers. Pontiacs also are adaptable.

Since this type of race gives the amateur his best chance, requiring nothing very expensive in the way of equipment, a few details will be given. On the morning of the race day stock cars must qualify for their positions in the race. Usually the ten fastest cars are allowed in the main event, the slower ones in a consolation race which gives them a chance to win some money to defray traveling expenses.

Two 10-mile sprints and a 20 or 30-mile feature race usually comprise the program, with a stunt such as a blindfold race occasionally added. In the latter the driver has a black hood completely covering his head, and he steers his race car entirely by sense of feel—that is, he is so familiar with the race track layout, and can sense position so accurately from the banked turns, that vision is unnecessary. When two blindfold drivers start tearing around the track at the same time, the roaring crowd realizes that it’s looking on a real thrill treat.

A white flag is used to start the regular race. The green flag means the driver is starting the last lap, and the checkered flag is the one the boys all hope for, signifying a winner.

Conduct of Dirt Track Races

When starting a race the drivers are lined up in the order they qualified for. The fastest qualifying car is the pole car, which leads the pack around the track until they are lined up for a flying start. The first lap is the most dangerous, as each driver strives to get into the turn first. After this lap they scatter out and the nerve tension of the drivers is somewhat relaxed.

In modifying stock cars for racing, all fenders, headlights, windshields, tops, and other parts that would cause resistance are removed. Beyond this, procedure varies with each model car. Valve ports of the engine are usually bored out, special valves and aluminum racing pistons installed, high compression obtained through use of special heads, and downdraft carburetor and oversize manifold added.

Ignition systems usually require some changes. Every driver knows that the magneto system is faster than the usual battery type. A special racing coil, which has a double winding with 30,000 turns, is usually used in conjunction with the double-breaker Mallory distributor. This combination generates a very hot and fast spark which requires a special metric racing spark plug to withstand it.

Special fuels are, of course, required to get the most out of the cars. High test gasoline would burn up the valves, so a special dope is added to regular gas.

Modified stock car racing has penetrated to all parts of the world. The Grand Prix Race at Stockholm, Sweden, traveling over mountains, frozen lakes, and dangerous passages, is run with stock cars. Even in far away Madagascar, an island off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean, modified stock car races are held.

Editor’s note: Mr. Roof is chief engineer of the R & R Manufacturing Company, Anderson, Indiana, manufacturers of parts for dirt track racers.

Ex LMS Coronation class No. 46229 Duchess of Hamilton sits inside the National railway museum. I would say this would be the one locomotive in the NRM that i would really like to see restored to working order, and in this guise too.

Yas Island Yacht Club’s streamlined curvilinear form was conceived as an iconic landmark on the brand new Yas Marina and F1 Track and makes an emphatic contribution to the leisure and hospitality facilities already within the precinct.

The complex incorporates various 5-star club uses within high quality contemporary interiors including restaurants, bars, lounges, function rooms, outdoor deck areas and associated administration, retail and car parking components.

A composition of dynamic and fluid forms link the buildings to the nautical theme, the heritage of the locale and the new F1 character of Yas Island. Yas Island Yacht Club is designed to excite, inspire and strengthen the concept that is Yas.

Distinguished by its sparkling white exterior shells against the backdrop of the Yas Marina and F1 Track, the sculpted forms of the two main buildings are reflected in a series of surrounding water features set into a lush garden landscape. A matrix of crystal LED façade lights integrated into the exterior shells enable their transformation into giant pixelated viewing screens against the night sky.

The king mackerel is a slender, streamlined fish, slightly flattened from side to side with a tapered head.

The mackerels are true members of the tuna family and are Western Atlantic species

They have preference for water temperature above 20deg.C (68deg. F) and salinity ranging from 32 to 36 ppt.

The King Mackerel is a schooling and migrating fish that spends the winter months in south Florida and moves to more northerly waters in spring / summer

King mackerel are constantly feeding carnivores that can attack with high speed, powerful jaws and razor-like teeth. They feed on all and any available food but favor jacks, sea trout, sardine like fishes, ribbonfish, herring, shrimp and squid

This design is not marked and could have been made in many countries, from 1930 to 1950. It is made of Plaskon plastic (urea formaldehyde), a cousin of baquelite.

From Wikipedia...

The MV Kalakala (pronounced kah-lah-kah-lah)[1] was a ferry that operated on Puget Sound from 1935 until her retirement in 1967.

Kalakala was notable for her unique streamlined superstructure, art deco styling, and luxurious amenities. The vessel was a popular attraction for locals and tourists, and was voted second only to the Space Needle in popularity among visitors to Seattle during the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. The ship is known as the world's first streamlined vessel for its unique art deco styling..

She was constructed in 1926 as Peralta for the Key System's ferry service on San Francisco Bay. On 6 May 1933 Peralta burned as a result of an arson fire at the terminal where she was moored, resulting in the complete destruction of her superstructure. The hull was still intact and on 12 October 1933 the vessel was sold to the Puget Sound Navigation Company (PSNC), also known by its marketing name, the "Black Ball Line". PSNC funded a refit to restore the vessel as a ferry.

In November 1934, William Thorniley, publicist for PSNC and president of the Olympic Peninsula Travel Association, named the new ferry Kalakala, which was said to mean "bird" in the Pacific Northwest Native American trade language Chinook Jargon.[3][4][5][6] Thorniley launched a national promotional campaign beginning with large billboard signs that simply said "KALAKALA!" Later, they said "KALAKALA, Seattle, WA" and featured a picture of the vessel as well.

The new bridge and wheelhouse were built entirely out of copper, from fear that the steel used in the rest of the vessel would interfere with the ship's compass.[7] Set back from her streamlined superstructure for aesthetics, it was impossible to see the bow of the vessel from the bridge. As visibility also depended on round portholes rather than a fully-glazed wheelhouse, she was known for being difficult to handle when docking.

Kalakala was well known for a heavy shaking vibration that ran throughout the vessel when in operation. This was probably due to poor alignment of the engines in the original construction of the vessel. When the propeller was replaced with a new 5-bladed version in 1956, the vibration was reduced by 40%.[8] Although the company wished the vessel to be known as the Silver Swan, the vessel soon attracted other, less complementary nicknames, including the Silver Slug, Silver Beetle, Galloping Ghost of the Pacific Coast, and, among Seattle's Scandinavian community, Kackerlacka, which means "cockroach"

In February 1946, Kalakala was issued Federal Communications Commission (FCC) license #001 for the first commercial radar syste

The Kalakala moored at Hylebos Waterway in Tacoma, Washington in November 2007.

After her retirement in 1967, the vessel was sold to a seafood processing company and towed to Alaska to work as a factory ship. After working as a crabbing ship for a couple of years, the Kalakala was beached in Kodiak, Alaska in 1970 and used to process shrimp.

Peter Bevis discovered the rusting hulk on a fishing trip in 1984. The Kalakala had been turned into a cannery and the internal structure had been reworked to create a building with cement floors, drywall, and ceiling tiles. After complicated financial negotiations and hard work, they managed to refloat her and tow her back to Seattle in 1998. The vessel has since been a source of controversy as her owners were unable to raise sufficient funds to refurbish the vessel or even to keep her moored in Seattle's Union Bay.

The vessel was sold in 2004 to a private investor, who moved her to an anchorage in Neah Bay provided by the Makah people. Soon after arriving at Neah Bay the Kalakala was evicted by the Makah, who also brought a lawsuit against the owners. The vessel has since been relocated to Tacoma, Washington.

In February 2008, Kalakala owner Steve Rodrigues announced his intention to acquire additional vintage ferry vessels and to restore them and the Kalakala as either ferries powered by wind and solar technologies or as museums. The Kalakala was scheduled for work on its hull and superstructure in dry dock in 2010,[11] but this never happened. After six years in Tacoma, the Kalakala began listing, and officials worried of environmental damage the ferry might pose.[12] The state had also passed a state law focusing on the removal of abandoned and/or neglected vessels in Washington state waterways so pressure is being applied to the owner to do something with the Kalakala.

Artistic projects

Several art projects arose from their fascination with the Kalakala, including a full-length album of solo cello compositions recorded onboard the vessel in November 2003, called "Songs From a Parallel Universe." There is also an as-yet unreleased film, also filmed on the Kalakala, about the "Ghost Dance."

There was also a live concert featuring the Icelandic band múm, Serena Tideman and Eyvind Kang, on board the Kalakala.

A temporary "pirate radio" station broadcasting from the Kalakala is featured in the 2005 documentary film "Pirate Radio."

Pennsylvania Railroad T1 Duplex Drive (4-4-4-4) Streamlined Steam Engine, a work in progress. This is as far as I will be able to go until I can order more parts, and that won't be for a while. Unfortunately, my LEGO budget has been drained, and I need to buy a bevvy of black bricks, plates, tiles, and yellow plates and tiles.

Other than that, however, she's almost finished. All that's left is to finish the tender, including build the skirt, add the four or five yellow pin stripes, coal for the bunker, and other random details on top; and finish the cab interior. I'm sure I'll find something to tweak that I'm calling done right now, but that's neither here nor there. I'd like to finish her in time to enter the Eurobricks train contest - time will tell (if I'm even eligible).

The gap between the tender and the locomotive isn't as small as I'd like, but I was able to shrink it down to 2.5 studs.

She's only a stud or two shorter than the Allegheny, something I wasn't really expecting when I first envisioned building her. But, then again, when I first designed her I wasn't as thorough at planning building locomotives as I have become.

"Are we going in for a pint?" Where better than this 1930s streamlined pub, The Birdcage, in Pottergate, Norwich? Even the current Pevsner can't come up with the name of the architect, but suggests J. Owen Bond. In the background St Gregory, now redundant and used as an arts centre. Like almost every church hereabouts it is built of flint. The open space was once its churchyard.

Streamlined - Christmas Special.

About digital publishing.

I digitally published it.

The method is described in iBooks Author.

March 17, 2017.

I released the past work as it is.

1. Unforgettable 'English version.

2. Unforgettable 'Japanese version.

3. A streamlined trajectory. Japanese version only.

iBooks Author.

I have been thinking about this means all the time.

I finally decided to do it.

For the time being, I am publishing it in the most standard form.

I have not studied how to use software at all.

But today I was able to publish with intuition.

This is a wonderful software.

It is free now.

But in the future, I will change to a charge.

Future schedule is scheduled for photo album with words.

Apple's iBooks.

Are you installing it?

:)

You should search by the words below.

MITSUSHIRO NAKAGAWA.

I hope that my work will arrive at your hand.

Thank you.

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One, to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other, to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days, staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

CeraMystic 2005 welcomed German ceramist, Manfred Braun. A member of Bundesverband Kunsthandwerk, he has participated in a variety of international exhibits, in Frankfort, New York, Tokyo and Cologne where he was the recipient of special mentions and awards. Luminary objects and vessels, in stoneware or porcelain, pure, elegant, contemporary designs executed with remarkable craftsmanship.

In the picturesque hamlet of Mystic, 45 minutes south-east of Montreal, a wide array of utilitarian and decorative ceramics will be displayed in a peaceful garden setting. Now in its eighth edition (in 2011), this outdoor exhibition will be featuring the work of some 30 guest artists, from one-of-a-kind garden sculptures, to beautifully-crafted, traditional pottery and contemporary, streamlined porcelain…

These are a few Streamlined and Semi-streamlined steam locomotives in HO scale. All are brass, except the two British LNER locomotives. Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific RR - The Milwaukee Road - F-7 4-6-4 by Kumata for Nickel Plate Products.

I think I've decided on a design for my 6-wide streamlined Hudson's boiler. I've also decided to do the train with a yellow body, a light bluish grey boiler, and yellow boiler trim (you're welcome, Tim ;).

Of course this is only a mock up, the real thing will be much longer and look a heck of a lot better.

Oh, and did I mention I'm going against everything I hold sacred and building this thing totally studless? (minus the technic half-studs that will be exposed from the 4x4 round bricks)

Commissioned version of my streamlined hudson.

Streamlined submariner - Orca in Kenai Fjord, Seward

Streamlined the top portion. I think it looks better in this scale, even if it isn't as accurate.

The Duchess of Hamilton, with the original streamlining restored, at the 2012 Railfest as two Virgin Balloons pass overhead.

That's a GG1 electric loco sitting there with a 4-6-4 streamlined Dreyfuss-inspired Hudson steamer in the same paint scheme as my passenger train. (No, I'm not modeling the hideous abomination known as the Penn Central, and before anyone says anything, I know no NYC Hudson steam engines survived that long anyway.)

ANYWAY: I'm just waiting on three more small orders to arrive before I call this one done!

A shiny well preserved streamlined locomotive from the Sonora Baja California Railroad. It ran from Tijuana, Baja California Norte to Hermosillo, Sonora and included two sections on the US side of the border in California. The first US section , through Carrizo Gorge has suffered from floods and fires and is probably currently out of service (a short segment near Campo is used by a private museum for excursions on some weekends). The section from Mexicali to Hermosillo is still used for freight.

This segment west of Mexicali was part of the original rail route from Yuma, Arizona to San Diego, California. Tracks still lead to San Ysidro on the US side of the border. There is also a cross border track connection at Mexicali / Calexico.
