I took this photo last year and didn't get quite the effect I was after. So, this year, despite a long day transporting equipment up the stream, followed by a four hour dive in the cave, I couldn't resist nipping back with the tripod and trying to beat last year's effort (though I only had five minutes to play with and Os had the engine running when I got back!)
This streamway up to Trou Madame is usually dry (you can walk up the river bed), but after heavy rain it turns into this.
Also my first experiment with the Singh Ray Vari-N-Duo filter (this was on about the 6 stop setting). Slightly miffed that I forgot to zero-out the camera from the last time I used it so this ended up being shot at ISO 800, but the file still looks clean enough to me.

This image is of Paint Branch Stream in College Park, Maryland towards Metzerott Road. Construction on The Enclave (background) and new Tempo apartments (downstream) off of Route 1 are major contributors to the poor water quality of the stream. Sediment runoff from construction sites like these in addition to riparian tree loss along the 14-mile stream has resulted in turbid water that blocks sunlight and makes it difficult for underwater organisms to survive. Sediment also stresses stream capacity and velocity. This in turn affects land organisms that rely on fish and macroinvertebrates. Restoration efforts have included building fish passages for easier migration and bank supports/improving root density to prevent erosion. Better sediment trapping at construction sites themselves also helps prevent water degradation.
This photo is connected to Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Under Water. Even though Paint Branch itself is not a large body of water like this goal focuses on, it flows into the Anacostia River and that flows into the Chesapeake Bay. Suspended sediment can travel far and is a prominent problem in the Bay area that threatens various aquatic species from Oysters (C. virginica) to Striped Bass (M. saxatilis). Preventing erosion at lower stream orders helps lower accumulation at higher orders, and makes for a healthier marine environment.
