We had a custom neon sign made of our dog Hudson with his favorite food in the world…a slice of pizza. The amazing artist who created this gorgeous piece is Wayne Heller, who is the owner and sign maker at @moonsignnyc in Red Hook Brooklyn. MoonSign specializes in designing and fabricating signs, graphics, visual ephemera and lighting projects. Wayne works with both artists and commercial clients to strategize concepts and provide art direction, technical drawings, fabrication, execution and installation. Wayne not only captured beautifully the essence of our dog Hudson in neon (swipe left for 2nd photo of @hudsonpittienyc peeking at his neon likeness) but also suggested to us that the clear blue neon would be perfect to use as it would not overwhelm our studio apartment when lit.

We visited Wayne at MoonSign for the reveal of our “Hudson Pizza Neon” and also had a chance to speak with him about how he became interested in neon and the process of how he brought our Hudson Pizza design to life from sketch to finished piece (swipe left for 3rd photo). Wayne also showed us some of the other unique pieces he has worked on including a vintage “Florist” neon sign which had hung outside a Chelsea Florist shop for years (swipe left for 4-6th photos) which he is bringing back to life in neon.

Easily accessed and located at a stone’s throw away from the

Kashmiri Gate Metro Station, this was one of the gates built by

Shahjahan around his newly founded city of Shahjahanabad. The

gate was in the north of the city facing towards Kashmir and

hence named Kashmiri Gate. It is one of the fourteen original

gates of the city that has survived to this day. It is the only two-bay

gate amongst the surviving gates. Built out of brick masonry and

covered with plaster, the gate has recently undergone conservation

work. The gate and the attached sections of the wall formed a

polygonal square towards the city, while outside it, there once

used to be a deep moat which has disappeared in due course.

When the British first started settling in Delhi in 1803, they

found the walls of Old Delhi in a poor state, especially after

the siege by Maratha Holkar in 1804, and they subsequently

reinforced the city’s walls and gates. The British gradually set

up their residential estates in Kashmiri Gate area, which once

housed some fine Mughal mansions and houses of nobility. The

gate itself rose to prominence in 1857, when a very fierce and

decisive battle between the British forces and Indian soldiers took

place in its vicinity. The Indian soldiers used the area to assemble

for strategizing fighting and resistance. On the morning of 14

September 1857, the bridge and the left leaf of the gate were

destroyed by the British using gunpowder, the beginning of the

final assault on the rebels towards the end of the famous siege of

Delhi. Evidence of the struggle is visible today in damage to the

existing structure. Although the gate suffered some heavy damage,

it survived as a symbol of victory of the British forces over

Indian rebels.

In 1965, a section of the Kashmiri Gate was demolished to

allow faster movement of vehicular traffic, but since then it has

become a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey

of India (ASI), and traffic no longer passes through it.

This year's NORML Conference was dramatic! Lots of political wars throughout nearly every city in the nation converging upon Los Angeles with hundreds of cannacig consumers. Arise! Arise! Deborah, Ruth and Hannah

Ruth Illuminations 15–16

Ruth 3:1–8

Naomi, her mother-in-law, said to her, “Daughter, I must seek a home for you, where you may be happy. 2Now there is our kinsman Boaz, whose girls you were close to. He will be winnowing barley on the threshing floor tonight. 3So bathe, anoint yourself, dress up, and go down to the threshing floor. But do not disclose yourself to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. 4When he lies down, note the place where he lies down, and go over and uncover his feet and lie down. He will tell you what you are to do. 5She replied, “I will do everything you tell me.” 6She went down to the threshing floor and did just as her mother-in-law had instructed her. 7Boaz ate and drank, and in a cheerful mood went to lie down beside the grain pile. Then she went over stealthily and uncovered his feet and lay down. 8In the middle of the night, the man gave a start and pulled back—there was a woman lying at his feet!

Commentary

Knowing now that Boaz has recognized Ruth as a relative for whom he might consider himself responsible, Naomi plans how Ruth might place herself squarely in Boaz’s attention. The elder woman sets the stage for desire to merge with conscience, to bring her daughter-in-law and herself security, to right Elimelech’s misdeeds, and to redeem the land and carry on the family line. Ruth will dress herself beautifully, and she will physically lay herself at Boaz’s feet.

The Targum elaborates on Naomi’s instructions to Ruth, hinting at a more seductive scenario of night breezes, fragrance, and the glinting jewels: “Now is there not Boaz, who is our friend, with whose girls you were in the field? He is winnowing at the barley threshing floor in the night wind. So wash yourself with water, anoint yourself with perfumes, put on your jewelry, and go down to the threshing floor.” In contrast, consistent with its focus on the moral and legal value of the tale, Ruth Rabbah keeps Ruth’s preparations firmly within the realm of moral purification for her new life—“wash thyself clean of thine idolatry. And anoint thee refers to good deeds and righteous conduct. And put they raiment upon thee. Was she then naked? It must refer to Sabbath garments.”

In the illuminated initial Hebrew word of Naomi’s advice, we catch glimpses of Ruth’s preparations for her nighttime encounter. The letters present hints of made-up eyes, hair brushed till it gleams tucked under scarves, a fresh gown and shawl, perfume dripping from a bottle, and fragrant myrrh blossoms, under the canopy of the night sky and rustling leaves. Naomi’s name is carved in stone above the English text, alluding to the strength that she mustered not only in strategizing the coming encounter with Boaz, but also her and Ruth’s very means of regaining security. The string of Canaanite-era beads trailing through the verses alludes to the Jewish tradition that Ruth is adopting under the influences first of Naomi, and now Boaz. The midrash on the Song of Songs compares the three divisions of Tanakh, the Torah, Prophets, and Writings to “baubles, bangles, and beads”; the Writings, which include the Book of Ruth, complete Tanakh just as beads are the finishing touch on a woman’s dress.

Modern readers may question the ethics or courage of Naomi’s plan: why should the women have relied on seduction and marriage, relying on a man to solve their problem instead of striking a more independent path? They indeed rely on traditional women’s roles for achieving support. Bible scholar James Kugel contrasts Naomi’s and Ruth’s stratagem with Deborah’s and Jael’s unconventional actions. He notes that Deborah’s and Jael’s stories suggest that women might have had leadership roles, as “strong, take-charge heroes.” In contrast, “Ruth and Naomi are closer to traditional women’s roles; indeed, the way in which they maneuver Boaz comes close to suggesting some of the usual clichés about female guile,” but, since we are brought to complete admiration of their characters, it is clear that the authors felt “evident sympathy and respect for them as women.” In the case of these two women, the law offered them a respectable means of achieving security without transgressing the social mores of their community. The women employed the clichéd female guile not to deceive the evidently unmarried Boaz into an inappropriate liaison but to move events along toward a socially appropriate, legally sanctioned, and dignified end.

Quite apart from its legal aspects, Ruth’s ploy—and Boaz’s eager reaction to it— suggests that the storyteller implies that romantic feelings may have kindled between the two. The bordering text drawn from Song of Songs 1:9–13 plays upon this possibility, as well as moral aspects of the tale conveyed in the midrash. The comparison of the woman to a mare among Pharaoh’s chariots—which archaeology has shown were, in fact, driven exclusively by stallions—suggests the sexual tension that might well have sparked this particular evening’s activities.

The Americans lead by a daring Benedict Arnold made a heroic and unimaginably hard slog up the Kennebeck river to the Richelieu river to take Quebec in late 1775. Everything that could go wrong did including the defection of nearly half of Arnold's Army when the going got hard. Despite it all Arnold lead an attack on Quebec in January 1776, where General Montgomery was killed, Gen Morgan and his men were captured and the Army was forced to retreat. Arnold himself was shot by a ricocheting ball that split in two pieces and badly wounded his leg. Arnold pushed on and lead a retreat back to Ft Ticonderoga. The attack was a failure (although one cannot blame Arnold considering the circumstances and difficulties he faced) but his scorched earth retreat left the British scrambling to catch up throughout the war.

Guy Carelton, governor of Quebec and General of the British Army acquired enough supplies and men to begin an assault on the Americans at Ft Ticonderoga, the Rebels northernmost defense (also captured earlier in 1775 by Benedict Arnold!). Arnold, as usual, beset with delays and a congress that wouldn't fund the war, and that heaped on Arnold considerable amounts of mistreatment and disrespect, using his former sailing skills as a sea captain, tried to create a navy on Lake Champlain to repulse the inevitable British assault. IN July of that year the Continental Congress issued the declaration of independence and Britain was not going to allow this insult to stand. During spring and summer of 1776 Arnold acquired 15 or so boats (all smaller than he requested and later than needed) and gathered a series of soldiers and drilled them into sailors.

Arnold was thinking back to the tactics of the ancient Athenians who decisively defeated the Persians in the Battle of Salamis using fast row galleons. He knew he could not defeat the British Navy head to head but he carefully selected Vacour Bay and planned to lure the British into a shallow, difficult to navigate area where his row galleons and small ships could negate the superiority of the British ships with speed and maneuverability.

All through spring and summer of 1776 he drilled his crews in sailing and rowing and by September they were as good as any he reported. The expected attack came in October of 1776 when a fleet of British ships sailed from Quebec to siege Ft Ticonderoga.

Arnold sent out Congress and Royal Savage to lure the Britis who took the bait and chased the ships. Royal Savage was grounded near Valcour Island and was burned by the British. It contained all of Arnolds papers.

The British ships could not fight the headwinds to engage until about 12 pm when Carelton entered the battle. A lucky shot cut her anchor line and she drifted out of firing position and was bombarded by the Americans. A ball severely damaged her and killed several officers, she floundered until she was towed to safety. The battle continued all day until Inflexible finally came within range and silenced the American guns. The Americans were nearly out of powder and balls when nightfall ended the battle The mangled fleet trapped but once again Benedict Arnold came through. Handing out slotted lanterns for the sterns and requirint the men to swaddle the oars in their shirts to dampen the sound, when a fog rolled in they quietly slipped out past the British and toward Ft Ticonderoga. Unfortunately the winds the next day favored the British and they chased the remaining boats till they were ditched and burned at Crown point. At that point every man was on his own and had to find their way back to Ft Ticonderoga. To make matters worse the British has turned loose hundreds of Mohawk warriors who were pursuing them as well. The remaining sailors straggled into the Ft several days later.

Carelton sailed to Ft Ticonderoga and found it better manned and prepared than he had anticipated. The fierce battle with Arbold also killed several officers and heavily damaged Carelton. Due to the lateness of the season (winter comes early and fast up there) Carelton decided to retreat to Quebec and start again in the next season. This would cost him his command...to a hated rival John Burgoyne...who boasted he would take the fight to them, unlike Carelton.

More importantly this action delayed the British for another year before they would attempt to attack again. One could argue that the scorched earth policy in Quebec and the Valcour Island battle hampered the British so much it gave the Americans time to prepare and strategize. It seems if the proper resources were allocated to Arnold for the Quebec venture and Valcour island the British might have been completely unable to launch a campaign from Quebec or forced them to expend such resources such that the revolutionary war might have been ended there.

This year's NORML Conference was dramatic! Lots of political wars throughout nearly every city in the nation converging upon Los Angeles with hundreds of cannacig consumers. I got a call from Russ Belville, Joe Grumbine, Stephanie Landa and others that the entire conference was about to be shut down because NO SMOKING of Cannabis of any kind allowed with the exception of.... You guess it the CANNAcig Vaporizer. So I rushed down with the CANNAcigs and saved the day from my activist friends. :) We had a great time strategizing on politics, networking and activism. RFMK, the maker of the CANNAcig and Medical Cannabis Management (MCM - www.MedicalCannabisManagement.com) is growing quickly.
