Krakow streets

Great moments can happen when two complete strangers interact in the street for the first time

Being stranger in a foreign land is not easy , it takes skills and effort to adapt to new environment and culture , sometimes a head twist to others is necessary even if you are master of wilderness

Vimukti is quite possibly the oldest man I have ever met, and I did nothing to make him look younger or 'better' here. And while he may be very old and very frail, to speak to him was to be in the presence of a very alert, very aware mind; not only that, to speak to him was to be in the presence of loving kindness... He had such a sweet demeanor, and tranquil calmness seems to be written all over his face; this was not an agitated, excitable soul. Vimukti (an assumed name, no doubt) was a tiny bit apprehensive about having his portrait taken -- not to be disagreeable or uppity or anything, but apparently because no one had ever taken his portrait before...or so he said. I think it was high time someone took this gentle man's portrait. [Taken at the Vedanta Olema Retreat Center in Marin County.]

Meet Gina.

She was extremely vibrant and enthusiastic about the project. When I had explained it to her, she mentioned Sue Kreitzman to me and told me she did something similar with photographing interesting people on the street. (I've Googled her since and she is a hugely interesting character in her own right)

Gina works as a troubleshooter, mainly in the financial sector. Her personality matched her style which is unique, bold and friendly. I hadn't noticed all her accessories when I had photographed her, but whilst editing I saw how much effort she puts into it, and good on her I say - she looks fabulous don't you think?

I was walking around Flowertown Park in Summerville today, hoping to find someone to photograph. I didn't hold out much hope, as most of the time when I walk that park, I don't run into anyone I want to take pictures of. But, lady luck was with me today.

As I rounded the corner of the path, I see this handsome fellow taking pictures of himself. I thought that was a good sign! He had a Canon camera mounted on one tripod, and I think it was wirelessly tethered to his phone on another tripod so he could see himself. It was a pretty nice setup.

I got to talkng photography with Mal for a few minutes. He said that he had only been shooting for about two years, and didn't consider himself a photographer. I say I consider anyone shooting with this type of setup a photographer in my book! I would love to see some of the pictures you have taken, Mal. And maybe you might even think about joining the Flickr 100 Strangers group. It's an awesome group, and a great place to grow your knowledge!

Mal had a rugged, powerful look about him. The first thing that hit my little klunker is that I wanted to shoot him low to give him a more powerful look. I also wanted a little more of a dramatic look to set off his features, so I wanted to split the light (sun on one side, shadow on the other). I kind of wish I had gotten him to cross his arms in front of his chest, but otherwise than that I like the way this turned out.

Mal, it was really nice chatting with you today. You seem like such a kind-hearted person. I hope you like this portrait of you, and I hope you keep shooting too! Have a very happy New Year!

Armed with my 50mm I must have spent at least a couple of hours near this alley where I have already shoot Yvonneè, stranger #98.

Three young ladies were walking in the distance and my antennas suggested to take a closer look: by the time I put my hand in the pocket to grab a card, they disappeared inside a shop: never mind.

A fee minutes later, while seeking other potential strangers, the ladies reappeared and were walking in my direction.

The lady who initialy caught my attention, didn't seem really interested to my request but fortunately, her friends convinved her to partecipate: I don't know why, but when this happens I come up with images that please me!

Meet Rosy.

I asked her just to stand in the middle of this alley and she did the rest; just a few images and not much else: not even a facebook connection.

Thank you Rosy, it was an intense experience for me and I hope you like the portrait as much as I do; I have a few more images to share if you get in touch

Imagine a large shop window divided in four old panes and, right behind them, two men eating grapes with a nice, old sewing machine in the middle.

"Hello, I don't want to interrupt your conversation but you are too perfectly framed in the window shop. May I take just a shot from the outside?"

After a great laugh from both, I was invited to eat the grapes with them. Ettore told me he is an upholsterer, and his shop is one of the few of its kind left in Venice. The place was an invite to be curious, and he knew it.

"Lots of people ask me to take pictures here" and he's happy about it, as he's a passionate photographer himself. We had too much to talk about and share, and in the end the light to take a shot from the outside was gone. There was still some light to take a picture from the inside using the shop window, so I took a few shots.

I'll be back, anyway. I'm quite interested in buying an old camera of Ettore's. And must do a picture from the panes.

I actually forgot that I took this picture.

We were hiking around the lake at my sister's in Logan Lake and a gaggle of kids came running along the path.

Jesse stood out. His dark hair against his blue tshirt was so great! He was happy to let me photograph him but his friends kept on going down the trail, so there wasn't much time for chit chat.

Here's the scoop:

- he was camping with his family

-his name is Jesse

- he is 11 years old

- I think he was from Lethbridge,AB.

I've spent a couple of hours hanging around the main square and collected only a few regrets: mainly a young girl sitting at a table with friends which I couldn't find again once I decided to ask her for a portrait.

On my way back to the train station, away from my comfort zone, I saw this really cool girl with headphones walking just a few steps behind me: not too far from there ther's a location I've used in the past and once I got close to if I handed one of my cards to Giulia asking if I could take a few portraits.

Giulia knows a least two of the strangers in my card and when I showed her my Instagram page she recognized other faces: this made it super easy and Giulia agreed immediately to pose for me: to make all the coincidences even more incredible, Giulia told me that she works as a photographer, mainly portraits and in fact she had just finished to do a photoshoot.

We moved to the small alley and I took quite a few shots while chatting: I went mainly for close-ups and, as most of the times, I did not pay much attention to the camera settings but I'm pleased with the results.

With the light fading away, the reflector gave a nice boost (probably even too much): interesting to see the different results with the golden and the silver sides of the reflector.

Giulia had to catch a train so we shaked our hands and walked away.

On my way home I've checked Giulia's profile and her portraits are really amazing!

The Homage to Alien. Yes this looks remarkably similar to my last build ;)

Thanks to Jared and Tom for the heads up. It was a great series :D

Did you realize no one can see inside your view?

He didn't know I took this one, hopefully it'll be a nice surprise.

I saw a pic on a book cover, had no idea who it was and decided to try to draw it and that's why this is called "Stranger"

So .. because I'm so un-stressed and have lots of free time ... not ... I'm starting a project of 100 Strangers.

... lol. I'm so bored, I'm making already existing projects MORE involving.

This is Lucas, he is a little boy that I didn't even know that lives on my street. I found out today that if you walk up and down the street with 35 ballons, children will come from places you didn't know existed.

Usually, it takes me a while to decide if I like someone. Rachel is one of those rare people that I liked the instant I met her. How could anyone not like her with a beautiful smile like that? The smile matches her exuberant personality and natural beauty.

Sky introduced us. She brought Rachel along as an escort for our photoshoot this afternoon. I hope I can persuade Rachel to model for me sometime soon.

A Stranger - 30 Seconds Project.

Bumped into this stranger in Amsterdam, who happens to be well-known dutch actress ;-)

What is better than one man on a tractor? Two men on tractors. This is Burt Wheeler, who doesn't own the tractor he is sitting on but is friends with Dunc (Stranger # 12) who owns a lot of these antiques. It was hard for them to hear me and vice versa as there was a carnival midway going on behind us. We chatted about the tractor square dance (I know, sounds weird, but it was amazing to watch!). I think I heard them both say that they never miss the Erin Fall Fair.

This stranger saw me on the sidewalk with my camera and asked for a photo. I sent him this frame. Behind him is a detail of Raven N' The City by Haida artist Shoshannah Greene.

While walking the streets of Bologna, I saw Arianna talking with her friend.

Having only a couple of minutes to shoot and being in a busy place did not help very much.

Arianna is the only stranger I managed to shoot in 2019; she works as model and I bet you've already guessed it!
