I Am a Strange Loop

I am definitely one of those strange loops, and I wouldn't have it any other way. It does tend to mess with one's sense of "is"ness on a daily, even hourly basis, however. 。◕‿◕。

part of ongoing body of prints, mixed media, c-photo output and various vr experiements :

Series of Fine Art Edition Prints by Oli Goldsmith made in 2017.

Port Hope, ON - where Oli lives and works at present - is explored through unique photographic, VR and digitally manipulated perspectives blending and evoking inner and outer realms, time, space and place.

The works are grounded in photography. As a medium I have admittedly some bias against I surprise myself in being tugged by intuition in this direction.

As my practice has developed over time I let go the 'conscious control reigns' further trusting in the process.

Crucial to my workflow is play and discovery. New technology and growing up while computers were likewise helped their use become my companion and muse in this spirit of experimentation.

I see the approach this takes as akin to a sort of oracle. As if throwing down stalks or flipping coins with the i ching, tossing images into digital programs in unintended ways (what not designed for) becomes for me a pseudo-random game and wordless dialogue with self.

From that dance between letting go of control (in a somewhat controlled manner) come the perturbations in process that keep the whole play of art-making alive and emerging.

While true of my work in general this new series of photo-based yet highly manipulated images is an ideal example of this aspect bringing about aesthetic surprises in my art making - resulting in new inspiration and artwork.

The series of work is being shown both in an October exhibition (details to come) and online. It's focus emerges from photos taken in Port Hope - utilizing recent vr and panoramic toolsets, cameras 3d scanners etc. Extending inside (my messy Post Hope studio and abode) and blending the public outer and private inner aspects of my own experience living here become themes inherent in the artwork.

I absolutely loved drawing this male model, specially the hair on his head. Although the above drawing only features his torso and legs (part of his arm on the top left).

He was the perfect model for me. Once he got into a pose, he just stayed still.

Second Take - same vr dog walk sequence of raw panoramic pics (the camera, like most in this fledgling category, auto-stiches two 180 degree images simultaneously shot from dual 180 lenses .... if anyone is wondering is Ricoh Theta S)

As outlined in other studio still shot with motion added - i wanted to see what would result from trying the same technique in after effects ... it is a projection method in which a virtual 'cage' or set of planes in 3d space (sky, floor, right, left, etc)

original image - or image sequence here - is basically chopped up while viewed through virtual camera in 3d - pieces are mapped onto the 3d planes. The same virtual camera can then be used to rotate, change depth of field, move around on timeline as w/ typical motion design / computer animation - then rendered out from that setup and POV.

Conceptually I find it really weird and intriguing this #strangeloop which i won't quite call recursive as is the nature of and difference between the idea of a 'strange loop' versus a feedback / recursive loop ... in seeming contradiction strange loop goes both ways - forward and backward (think #escher drawings and other so-called #impossiblegeometry - i did get the term from 'Godel, Escher, Bach' the excellent book en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6del,_Escher,_Bach by Douglas Hofstadter)

The process of re-visualizing and re-photographing in the computer what I have already used this device conceived of as a model of not just my eye but in this case extrapolating out from typical basic camera to capture and simulate reality and 3d space via radically distorted and stiched 360 image camera.

Then there is me conceptualizing the thing as a model of imagining the process, how I might throw some cool monkey wrenches into it :) even now as I type this I vaguely picture through some mental model each bit of this whole thing while seems off hand to be something like capturing feedback optical effect such as the double mirrors in which yu nop doubt have at omepoint glimpsed multitudes of yourself reflected into infinity - some how reversing that in post production, and finguring out a way to include same mirror effect live of the subject in VR space.

In VR I guess that means you are a ghost - I suspect none too many vr environments feature mirrors at this stage. That is the kind of situation I want to explore - not to achieve what seemed impossible through tricks but to reveal things about the self and how experiences in reality out there - whether virtual or not - treating outer and inner as essentially the same process / phenomena.

Much of my work these days explores in some way or another relates to this theme - reality, illusion, experience, contradition, dichotomy and the unity of opposites / fallacy of causality. In playful ways of course :)

work today. magazines were read, which gave me this idea. my remote died, so i had to ask a fellow nurse to hit my shutter (i was a little tied to the IV) let's just say a few fellow nurses then walked in on the scene. they think i'm so f-ing nuts!!! thanks judy for the trigger help... and for talking photo with me today!!

Just about all of my morning was spent with a young lass who decided to stay unconscious a little bit longer than I wanted her to, and so photographic opportunities were a bit light today.

So this seems as good a time as any to provide the obligatory self portrait that must feature in there somewhere. Even the mighty koosh ball makes a minor guest appearance!

And if I'm shooting a Canon that's shooting a Canon - are they Canoning into each other? Ah, the wordplay possibilities are endless. :)

Los Angeles electronic auteur Flying Lotus (real name: Steve Ellison) is supporting his fourth album, “Until the Quiet Comes” (Warp Records), with a fall headlining tour and an Erykah Badu-assisted single, “See Thru to U.” But perhaps the most stunning aspect of the promotional campaign has been its forward-thinking visuals, most notably in a short film also titled “Until the Quiet Comes” that arrived in early September, about a month before the album’s release date (Oct. 2).

Directed by Khalil Joseph, the film refracts the darkly lit R&B of Flying Lotus’ latest opus through abstract, sometimes grisly, scenes set throughout Los Angeles’ Nickerson Gardens housing project. In one shot, a child lies motionless in an empty swimming pool, red liquid spilling away from his body; in another, a shirtless man dances hypnotically toward a gang of apathetic teenagers in the dead of night.

Instead of tying the video to one album track, Flying Lotus (known as “FlyLo” to friends) edited pieces of three songs together from “Until the Quiet Comes” -“See Thru to U,” “Hunger” and “Getting There”-and delivered the music to Joseph, who has helmed clips for indie-rap troupe Shabazz Palaces, as well as the Vans sneaker company. “A lot of FlyLo’s music can be very dark,” Warp label manager Josh Berman says, “and this record has some really gorgeous, ethereal, upbeat stuff as well.”

The film drew online praise from Spin, the Los Angeles Times and Stereogum, and “Khalil Joseph” briefly became a worldwide trending topic on Twitter on Sept. 6. The strong response prompted Warp to submit the unedited video to MTV, and, even with the violent content, the short film was accepted by MTV2. Meanwhile, it has earned 511,000 YouTube views.

A couple of weeks later, Flying Lotus unveiled a markedly different visual: an animated video for the album cut “Putty Boy Strut” that features robots working in rhythm to brightly colored beats. The clip, directed by animation guru Cyriak Harris and released Sept. 19, served as a fantastical antithesis to the stark realism of Joseph’s short film.

Next up for Flying Lotus is translating his breathtaking visuals into his live show, which begins Sept. 23 with a one-off concert backing Animal Collective at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl and resumes in New York on Oct. 7. Berman says the producer is once again teaming with visual artist Dr. Strangeloop, a longtime collaborator who recently began working on Skrillex’s stage show, to project “collage-found imagery” while Flying Lotus spins his new tunes. Still-unannounced events in New York and Los Angeles will coincide with the album’s release.

I seldom use the words 'next level'. But for the visuals Strangeloop and Timeboy provided for Flying Lotus this definitely goes. Two layers of projections, along with synchronised neon lights make for a surreal 'ambilight' experience. Pity you don't get to see Ellisons grining teeth anymore, now he's behind a screen.
