The painter Vilhelm Hammershøi lived in the house Strandgade 30 in the district Christianshavn in Copenhagen from 1898 to 1909. Here he painted some of his most famous pictures, often with his wife Ida as a model. Here is the yard behind the house. Vilhelm and Ida lived on the 1st floor behind the three windows surrounded by half-timbering.

Through the gate opening there is a view of a window in one of the buildings that housed the Old Asiatic Company.

Christianshavn a neighbourhood located on several artificial islands in the city of Copenhagen in Norway.

In 1612, Christian IV initiated an ambitious programme to fortify Copenhagen. During the period 1618-1623, he erected earthen embarkments with five bastions in the marshy area between Copenhagen and the island of Amager. At the same time the idea was hatched of creating a new merchant town in the area. In 1639 the little merchant and fortress town of Christianshavn was established. However, competition from Copenhagen soon proved too strong for the little town, and by 1674 it was incorporated into its larger neighbour.

The fortifications were further developed with six more bastions in the 1660s, and seven more bastions between 1682-1692. Additional reinforcements occurred between 1779–1791, and again in 1810-1813. Even though the fortifications around the Inner City were being dismantled in the late 19th century, Christianshavn's fortifications continued in use into the 20th century. Some areas were opened up in the late 1910s-1920s, and the final areas were made public space in 1961.

Christianshavn is now a lively, primarily residential area. It is quartered by the Christianshavn Canal, running north-south along its length, and Torvegade, the main thoroughfare of Christianshavn, running east-west, connecting Amager Side Copenhagen to the city centre across Knippelsbro. Where the canal and the street intersect, at the geographical centre of Christianshavn, lies the square Christianshavns Torv. Along the eastern shoreline of the island runs Christianshavns Vold which now serves as the principal greenspace of the neighbourhood.

The lower side called Christiansbro, is the most affluent part of the neighbourhood, with several modern residential developments built on the grounds of the former Burmeister & Wain / B&W Shipyard. Several headquarters are also found in the area, including most notably the Danish headquarters of Nordea along its entire harbourfront, while its most important historic building is Christian's Church. On the other—Rampar Sidet—side of the canal, the area is dominated by historic residential buildings and institutions.

The upper side, stretching along Strandgade from Torvegade to the Trangaven Canal, is dominated by old renovated warehouses and merchant's houses. A number of large institutions are located in the area, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Cultural institutions include Danish Architecture Centre and the North Atlantic House. On the other side of the canal, Christianshavn's Upper Rampart Side is the densest and most neglected part of the neighbourhood with around half of Christianshavn's 10,000 inhabitants living in that area.

Holmen is a district characterized by a mixture of old military buildings and new residential developments and is the home of many creative business-like advertising agencies and architectural practices as well as creative educational institutions like Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and the Danish Film School.

Freetown Christiania, a partially self-governing neighbourhood which has established semi-legal status as an independent community in an area of abandoned military barracks, appears as a "city within the city". It has a considerable population and is a venue for many cultural events as well as experimental and idiosyncratic "Architecture Without Architects".

Having an hour's rest on the boat trip and a cup of tea to follow, we felt ready to explore a bit more of Copenhagen.

We walked along the canal side parallel to where the boat had taken us and my aim was to get closer to the church you can see in this photo, The Church of our Saviour.

Charming and picturesque – that is the epitome of the hip neighbourhood in Copenhagen known as Christianshavn. Scenic tree-lined canals packed with boats and boat masts, colourful houses, and centuries-old architecture – Christianshavn is a cultural gem oozing with history.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Painted in 1900 in the artist's home at Strandgade 30.

The same corner of Hammershøi's salon features time and again in the artist's oeuvre, each time furnished differently. The apartment was Hammershøi's blank canvas, and he took pleasure in arranging and re-arranging the furniture and the paintings on the walls, each time producing a new composition of remarkable originality.

Describing the essence of Hammershøi's enigmatic interiors, Kirk Varnedoe commented: 'For Hammershøi the interior provides a retreat from modernity and the outside world. It is an inner sanctum of serene classical design, of fine objects filled with memories, and of mahogany furniture imbued with the past.' (Kirk Varnedoe, Northern Light, New Haven & London, 1988, p. 108.

Much of Hammershøi’s work shows interiors from his homes. Over the years he would use his changing homes as studio and subject matter. He did not choose his flats at random. In an interview with the magazine Hjemmet (The Home) in 1909 Hammershøi said: "I personally prefer the Old; old buildings, old furniture, the unique and distinct atmosphere that such things possess."

His homes were chosen because they provided a sensuous space for his paintings. The rooms constitute the main setting, and in this setting the figures interact with their surroundings as if taking part in an intimate chamber play. Hammershøi (1864 - 1916) did not just paint interiors; he also ventured outdoors to depict a number of buildings and places in the city. These were always carefully selected, and frequently viewed through a characteristic misty haze.

Corona - the solar exclipse sun flares kind of corana - installation at Copenhagen Light Festival February 2021.

Installation description from copenhagenlightfestival.org/lightworks-2021/:

CORONA – BLACK HOLE SUN

WHO: Kollision

WHERE: The front of Nordatlantens Brygge, Strandgade 91,1401 København K

WHEN: From 6.30 – 8.00 am and again 5 – 10.30 pm

ABOUT THE LIGHT WORK

Corona – Black Hole Sun is one of the festival’s light works, whose message we so desperately need at this time. The work is a re-creation of the recognizable corona that occurs during a solar eclipse. The rare experience of the life-giving sun standing like a black silhouette, with a sharp and vibrating ring of light rays around it. A gloomy feeling that our entire basis of existence has been put out of play for a short while, but also a rare and amazing experience that heralds the return of light.

The light work was conceived by the design office Kollision in collaboration with LiteNordic Spaces and Martin Professional and was created specifically for Copenhagen’s waterfront, prominently mounted on the old facade of Nordatlantens Brygge, whose brick stages the work’s basic idea in the most beautiful way.

The work appears as a clear and easily decodable circle, on which programmable light is mounted, which radiates on the facade in such a way that the illusion of a solar eclipse is formed. The passer-by sees how the light radiates from the dark center, and illustrates the familiar form of pure energy. Not necessarily an experience we have all had, but which we all recognize as an almost magical phenomenon.

The work intends to recapture the name Corona, and anchor it in the optimism of the sun, rather than the heavy blanket of deprivation that the name has in these times laid all over the world. The work aims to instill hope and provide a luminous experience, in the middle of winter darkness.

A belief that brighter times will return.

Management of the work

The dynamic installation will with small courses create pulse and sun salutations for the spectators. The work’s complex lighting technology layer makes it possible to let the viewer interact with the light via a website on their own mobile phone. By simply sliding his finger across the contour of the circle on the phone, the viewer adds more energy to the sun, which now shines even more powerfully on the surroundings. A living experience in the dark that points towards brighter times. The work is managed by Kollision’s own software, Media Architecture Platform (MAP).

Whilst visiting Birmingham's 'Frankfurt Christmas Market' we popped into Flying Tiger, the Danish variety store. To our surprise, we spotted this colourful little wooden jigsaw for sale at a modest £10. A laser-cut push-fit, complete with whimsies and presented in a wooden box with a slide-fit lid, it was a bargain and a 'must-have'. Further investigation on their website informed us that it was sold as a limited edition (presumably for the Christmas period). Remarkably good quality for the price!
