The Theological Hall with stucco decoration and paintings from 1720s

Strahov Monastery is a Premonstratensian abbey founded in 1143 by Bishop Jindřich Zdík, Bishop John of Prague, and Duke Vladislav II.

In 1670 Jeroným Hirnheim, a philosopher and theologian became the abbot of Strahov. His greatest work, which has survived to the present days, was the building of the new library, in the so-called Theological Hall (Teologický sál) completed in 1679. During the 17th and the early 18th century other abbots continued in the reconstruction of the monastery. They also cared for the church, which was repaired and decorated several times during the given period. The monastery experienced other great building activity namely after the assault of French and Bavarian troops in 1742, when Prague was bombarded and seriously damaged. Then the abbot organised building works again in the course of which the church was rebuilt along with the monastery area.

After 1950, the library was incorporated into the Memorial of National Literature. After 1989 the library was along with the monastery returned to the Premonstratensians. Within the library reading room also works today. The Strahov Library contains over 200,000 volumes, including over 3,000 manuscripts and 1,500 first prints stored in a special depository.

The monastery survived in this way until 1950, when it was taken over by the communist regime, the religious being interned and placed in civil employment, very few of them being able to work in the clerical administration as priests of the diocese. The monastery was subjected to thorough archeological research and transformed into the Memorial of National Literature. In the course of the said archeological research the long since forgotten Romanesque form of the monastery was revealed and reconstructed in a sensitive way.

Strahov Monastery (in the background to right of the tree) was established by the followers of St. Augustine. It was rebuilt in Gothic style after fire destroyed it in 1258. It is known for its 800 year old library housing one of the oldest monastic collections in the Czech Republic. Despite ransacking by invading armies, it holds 16,000 books.

The Strahov Library, according to some, is the most beautiful library in the world. I would't dispute this. One must buy tickets to view these two halls, another to take pictures here, and another ticket to view the halls close-up and wander around the stacks with a minder. You can just faintly see the blur of two people to the right of the globe who chose the third option. To take this picture, i put my camera on a tiny travel tripod, close to the floor and pointing upward to get as much of the room in as possible.

From www.aviewoncities.com/prague/strahovmonastery.htm:

The Philosophical Hall was built a century later, between 1782 and 1784. The ceiling's frescoes, depicting the history of mankind, were created in 1794 by the Austrian painter Franz Anton Maulbertsch. The two-story high hall contains books obtained from an old monastery in Moravia.

Due the the many additions to the Library a second hall was built in the late 1700's.

The Theological Hall of the Strahov Monastery in Prague. The monastic library contains upwards of 110,000 volumes, of which 1200 are incunabula. Of these there are about sixty unique volumes. Of the many rare manuscripts the most precious is the Evangelistarium of the 6th century, written in uncial letters and still well-preserved. Also within are some of the oldest Bibles and religious texts in the world. The Monastery was founded in 1143. This is a vertical panorama of three photos taken with a 10mm lens stitched together.
