The weight of the "lake effect" snow – combined with leaves still being on the trees – has resulted in numerous tree limbs and branches falling into CEI equipment and wires, causing service interruptions. The hardest hit areas are Cuyahoga and Geauga counties.

Crews work around the clock to restore service to customers following major weather events. The priority for restoration starts with emergency services, including hospitals, police, and fire. Repairs are scheduled based on restoring the most people the fastest. In areas with severe damage, it may require repairs in multiple locations to restore power to one location.

Crews from other FirstEnergy utilities have helped restore service throughout the snow event.. These trucks are from West Penn Power.

Ohio Edison crews worked around the clock on July 8, 2014, to restore service to customers following severe storms. Here's a look at what our crews were up against.

Replacing damaged poles in places trucks can't go is a time-consuming and labor-intensive part of restoring service.

Customers are encouraged to be safe around downed power lines:

- Keep children and pets away from any wires.

- Customers should immediately report downed wires to CEI or local police or fire departments.

- Customers should never go near a downed power line, even if they think it's no longer carrying electricity.

- Don't walk or drive near or over a downed line, and watch out for anything touching the line. If a wire falls on a vehicle, passengers should stay inside until help arrives.

After the storm: One of our favourite trees on one of our favoutite walks, either struck by lightening or blown down by the more than a 140km. an hour winds! And there was hail, some of it the size of a cricket ball (about 4 golf balls), that smashed its' way across Brisbane. I didn't have the heart to photograph any of the smashed homes! That was, of course, well covered by the media.

We were one of the lucky ones with just a 24hr. power outage.

Lynchburg teenager survives storm scare

By: Chris Whitley | WSLS 10

LYNCHBURG, VA --

It was one of the hardest hit neighborhoods I saw last week. The storm that blew through 11 days ago, left downed power lines and trees blocking the only way out for dozens of homes off Interlink Road in Lynchburg.

While most of the neighborhood worried when they would get back to normal life, Brenna Wooldridge is just happy to be alive. She was in her room when the storm hit. With the power out, Brenna was searching for candles. "They were right here. I actually had trouble finding one because I think the cat knocked it over. I went to get one, but I had a chair right here. I was sitting down when I heard a shake, so I ducked my head. I looked up and turned around. There was ceiling stuff everywhere. The ceiling fan was here and there was fiberglass everywhere. I was freaking out," said Brenna.

Freaking out, because the tree that fell on the house, crashed into her room. It split the bed right where Brenna's head would have been. "I was gonna go to bed early but I didn't because my brother convinced me to stay up," said Brenna.

After the initial fear, Brenna and her family went down to the basement to wait out the storm. A week and a half later, the damage done that night is keeping them from staying here. "It's been pretty bad. When the tree fell, we had to stay in our house and it was hot. Then we went to a hotel and it's really small it's not fun. It could be worse, of course it could be worse. Everyone is safe, so that's important," Brenna added.

The most important thing from a scary night she will never forget.

Crews from FirstEnergy Corp.’s utilities are now using smart phones and laptop computers to more efficiently assess damage to the electrical system and help expedite power restoration efforts in the wake of major storm events.

To help expedite this process, FirstEnergy has developed two new apps that employees can use on mobile devices to automatically enter damage information into the company’s outage management system. In the past, this process relied on paper maps, hand written notes and phone calls between field responders and dispatch offices.
