A colour photograph of my Chinese pedals pedalboard, I just love this thing!

Making Music.....

A few weeks ago I spent a few hours playing my guitars in my music room, at one point i decided to shoot some photos of my guitar and while I was at it shot a few of my equipment too.

this was a shot of my pedal set up.

Thank you for visiting for marking my photo as a favorite and for the kind comments,

. . White, and his Black Train Blues.

Listening to some great music . . . and remembering what real music was like without stompboxes, synthesizers, and the like.

Real Blues. What a voice.

Love this band, this sax player uses all kinds of stompboxes (effect pedals) on his sax and the guy on keys uses a vintage Wurlitzer piano and a vintage MOOG synthesizer. The drummer doesn't have toms, just a hi-hatt, ride, snare, bassdrum and a timbale..... and it works !

Now with less stuff!

Some noticeable changes have been made since last time. Gone are the HardWire DL-8 Delay/Looper, the TC Electronics Vintage Dual Distortion, and the Electro-Harmonix Pulsar tremolo. In their places are a newly acquired Electro-Harmonix Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai and the return of the Keeley modded BOSS SD-1.

Here's how handy my wife is sometimes. I was saying that maybe one of those Shed-in-a-Box things would make a good place for me to paint stompboxes, since space is so tight in here.

April found a K-Mart Blue Light Special on one that was $139 lowered to $70 and then cut to $35 for clearance! The catch was that we had to drive to Sebring to pick it up, since it was only available at that store. So we just went and grabbed it.

Strange little mall there in Sebring. The K-Mart was one of the main stores. Which I haven't seen since I was a kid and we had a mall built around a K-Mart in my little home town. Like, the main entrance of the K-Mart opened out into the mall. Only the garden department opened into the parking lot. Old mall, too. Almost no chain stores, although they still had a JC Penny. Mostly little fly-by-night stuff that could afford the rent. Lotta empty storefronts. Malls in general just aren't really a thing anymore. It's a little, 'Dawn of the Dead' in the ones that are just hanging on.

Anyway, new paint booth! I'll find raccoons in there huffin' Krylon. "Dude, this is SO righteous!" I'm tellin' ya, this Shed in a Box was discounted more than the old Fool Audio Research, 'Dick in a Box.' I was sure that was going to be more popular. Heh...

Simple passive circuit in a 1590a box.

Circuit comes from this article by Jack Orman: www.muzique.com/lab/pickups.htm

It's half a 10k audio transformer (a Triad TY-141P), a standard guitar volume/tone circuit with orange drop .1uf cap, then a 10ohm carbon comp cap and a 470pf cap to simulate a long cable run.

Basically, it rolls off some top end, but also makes the impedance of whatever source you plug it into a bit more like a guitar pickup.

So, synths sound better through stompboxes, particularly finickity fuzz boxes. It's also a bit like a DI box...

The switch selects no/half/full transformer coils. A bit like single coil v humbucker pickups.

Before the show at the Turf Club in St. Paul, MN.

(January 2009)

I recently got my hands on the Digitech HardWire DL-8 Delay pedal, so that brought about another revision to the pedalboard. I removed the really old Boss pitch shifter/delay and analog delay pedals. I may put back the Boss analog delay, but I'm not sure I'll ever need three delay pedals on there!

I also moved the VariOboost to the top row, which puts it in the effects loop instead of in front of the amp. This makes it's effect MUCH more pronounced. I have it set to tame the insane amount of midrange that I can't otherwise dial out of my Mesa Stiletto. (I don't need it with my Lone Star, though).

That leaves an empty spot on the bottom row for another addition. I'm thinking about the Catalinbread Serrano Picoso boost. We'll see.

One other note....

Those Digitech HardWire pedals have an interior switch that allows you to turn true bypass on or off. I turned true bypass OFF in the reverb pedal, since it's the last one in the chain, and the signal is making a 20 foot trip to the pedalboard and another 20 foot trip back to the amp. The others are true bypass, so I thought it'd be a good idea for one of them to have a buffer on. The same is true for the bottom row - the MXR phaser is non-true bypass, so I have a buffer there, too.

(This is probably way more than anyone wanted to know.)

Here's what's on it, in order of signal flow (right to left, bottom to top).

BEFORE THE AMP:

Peterson Strobo Stomp tuner (v1)

Keeley Compressor

Fulltone OCD overdrive (v1)

BB Preamp overdrive (with cool copper finish)

MXR EVH Phase 90

IN THE AMP'S EFFECTS LOOP:

Catalinbread VariOboost parametric eq/boost

MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay

Digitech HardWire DL-8 Delay/Looper

Digitech HardWire RV-7 Digital Reverb

AND FINALLY:

Amp footswitch (Stiletto switch works identically for my Lone Star)

Swart Space Tone ST-6V6se, Misc. Vintage and Boutique Stompboxes, Refinished Modified Fender Custom Shop 1960 FMT Stratocaster

some of the great effects boss discontinued or moved to taiwan for production

I finally 'finished' it (as much as it can ever be finished). I need to do some work on the top row (replacing the leftmost two Bosses), but I'm really happy with the bottom row.

A potential layout for the pedalboard. I haven't decided on whether or not to use the volume pedal or just leave it out and use an A/B box to switch between tuning and rockin'.

(Not shown, and below the riser, is a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2 Plus to juice up this monster.)

Now with more stuff!

...and less wiring, although that bit is temporary.

The goal this time around was to move pedals that aren't used (kicked) often into one general area (the top right). I spent an eternity trying to organize this thing to the point where I'm absolutely sick of hearing the sound of Velcro being pulled apart. I'm still not sure if this is a arrangement I'm 100% satisfied with, but we'll see how it does at practice this week.

For more info on this pedal, see Frantone's Peachfuzz info page. It's in perfect working order and will be going up for sale soon.

The primary difference between this version of my board and the last version is the Eventide ModFactor. After not very exhaustive non-scientific lab work, I determined it should go in the effects loop, rather than in front of the amp. Therefore, it needed to go on the top level, displacing the amp footswitch to the bottom level, where the Phase 90 used to be.

I'm about ready to sell every modulation pedal I own (and that is a good number of pedals). The ModFactor renders them obsolete. Sure, it's probably not a perfect clone of all of my old pedals, but it sounds great anyway. Man...I haven't heard flanging like this since the last time I hooked up my A/DA Flanger.

Next up (as soon as I can raise the funds by selling some of the aforementioned pedals), a PitchFactor!

Ampeg B-15, stompboxes, and Optigan! photo by Jason Quigley

La modificación Pure Mod para el Boss Blues Driver BD-2 convierte a este pedal en un exquisito overdrive con un completo rango de sonido y una inigualable transparencia de tonos arenosos y afiliados.

I've been using the configuration seen here for about a month or so and it's working nicely. The one gripe I had was with tuning during songs. The Ernie Ball VP (when in "silent") would route a signal to the tuner, but it wasn't completely silent. There was also the unintentional side effect of silencing anything coming out of the delays, etc. since the volume pedal is at the end of the chain.

To get past this, I picked up a Loop-Master Standard-Mini A/B Box (seen in the upper right). This is a true bypass switch that'll let me swap between tuning or playing. Pretty cool.

Now minus the Bonzai New Rising Sun and plus the GtrWrks 19 sixty 3. Jim was selling his, so I took it off his hands for him. The 19 sixty 3 is a great clean boost. The Bonzai is great, but I wasn't utilizing its features (it's also considerably larger than the 19 sixty 3).

I've now got some space on the board on the right for stashing a capo, EBow, or Buddha Machine.

With a big assist from Jim, we got Lava Cable cut and ready to go. So this is the "final" configuration for my pedalboard. Final, at least, until I get something else to put on here. The Buddha Machine in the top right is velcro'ed on for easy access and isn't part of the signal chain (yet, anyway).

Order of operations:

1. Boss SD-1 Super OverDrive

2. Wampler Cranked AC

3. Banzai New Rising Sun

4. Electro-Harmonix Stereo Pulsar

5. Malekko ECHO 600 Dark

6. HardWire DL-8

7. Ernie Ball VP (which, depending on the setting, goes to the amp or to the Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner)

(A Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2 Plus sits below the riser to power the whole thing.)

This is a truly beautiful looking and sounding thing made without compromise by David Main of D*A*M for Macari's. More info here

I had no idea stompboxes existed this small until I spotted a photo uploaded by Big Al Davies. After researching, decided I needed to have one of these. However, when the Hotone Grass arrived, it was even smaller than I expected. Lets hear it for efficient and elegant design. Very cool... and it has some great tones to boot.

Note: In case you were wondering, yes - my hands are that big.
