This house has quite a story behind it. I'll try to paraphrase from about 10 pages of text that I found through the National Register for Historic Places. Be sure to check out the two previous photos to see some older views of the house...
This is in the Deer Park neighborhood, one street over from Highland Middle School. It was built in two sections. The rear section was built in 1834 and is the oldest known frame residence in Louisville. The Italianate / Eastlake style front section was attached in 1873. Until about 1920, it was the "manor house" for the surrounding 30 acres.
There were several outbuildings before the subdivision of the estate. The only remaining structure is an underground ice house discovered by the owners (in the 70's). It is a brick domed room with a circular opening in the top and is about 12 feet in diameter. The owners sealed it back up.
The original owner was William Bullock, a distinguished Kentucky statesman, judge, orator and philanthropist. He established the common school system in Kentucky and was one of founders of the Kentucky School for the Blind and the American Printing House for the Blind.
The Clifton name comes from William and his son Charles. Charles inherited the property and was responsible for the construction of the front section of the house.
The house was then sold to John E. Norris in 1884. Norris was a wealthy stocktrader involved in the Bourbon Stockyards for 40 years. There was a false legend that Norris had hung himself in the cupola, but he died peacefully while sleeping in his hammock on the front porch of the home in 1918. After his death, the house then went to Arthur Yunker and his family for 57 years, so the house has also been known as "The Yunker House".

"Architecturally, the house contains many unique aspects. No other known residence in the city of Louisville is designed in the extravagant Steamboat Gothic Style. No surface of the exterior is untouched by decorative elements: extraordinary bargeboards, carved panels, unusual window and door hoods, finely carved brackets with pindells, gables, arches and, the crowning glory, an octagonal cupola. The interior has equally lavish elements; marble and cast iron mantels and fireplaces in each room, Lincrusta-Walton wainscoting, several bay windows of various shapes, wide window and door frames and baseboards and beautiful chandeliers.
The house is architecturally and historically important to Louisville's history. Both the Steamboat Gothic style of the front section and the frame Federal style of the rear section are unique to the city. Their combination into one residence is masterful."

On the bank of the Lek river, with Vianen, the haven of bankrupts in the background, Harlequin rides a triumphal wagon driven by Athena (“Pallas,” goddess of wisdom). He is followed by a crowd of wretched investors who jump after bills he tosses to them. But where they chased companies and commodities, now they chase low trades and goods. The bills in Harlequin’s hands say, “uyen en kool” (onions and cabbage), “schoen-lappen” (cobbler), “Liet-sang” (ballad-singer, or busker), “Op kar” (?), “Basschander” (?). Other bills falling to the crowd are “Oud yser” (scrap iron), Engelse sprot (English smelt – a small fish), “Hitte gebra[ad?]” (hot roast), “Turf-drager” (turf-carrier), “Kar-man” (coachman), “Kuyllen” (?), “na Via.” (to Vianen). A lucky few have the concessions on gardening (“Tuyn-man”), gutter-cleaning (“Geuten Schoon”), portage (“Kruyer”), chimney-sweeping (“Schoorsteen-veeg”), Mussel-selling (“Mosselen”), magic-lantern projectionist (“Tover-lantere”). Unlucky investors hold bills with lots of zeroes on them or, in one case, “Sold op Inde” (Bill of the Indies Company).
In the foreground trade of some kind goes on. Lower left, an “Akkordeer” (ascertainer?) counts out money on a bale. In the lower middle a couple of traders wheel goods (“altyd winst” – profit always). Lower right, near more bales of goods, a merchant offers money to Mercury, god of commerce.

035 - DE MALLE ACTIONISTEN NAAR VIANEN, OF ‘T PEPERLAND [The Crazed Stocktraders on the way to Vianen or Pepperland]
All aboard the wagon for Vianen and Culemborg (“Kuilenburg”), twin cities of refuge for the bankrupt. 18th-century “Types,” thieves, knaves, and fools try to climb aboard the wagon driven by Bombario, while Harlequin blows bubbles in the back seat. A monkey atop the wagon waves a flag that says “Zie zo, / Zie zo, / Bombario / is Apery / in folio” (See, see, Bombario is monkeyshines in the [stock] portfolio]).
Not everyone can climb aboard. The country bumpkin who would be a squire (“Lubbert Lubbertse” in the verses) can’t afford the ticket - “Zwol 10000 voor ‘t passagiegeld” (Zwolle, 10,000 voor passage – Zwolle shares 10,000 each).
In the left foreground, under an awning labeled “Actioniste hantsterking te koop” (Stock-trader hand-steadier—i.e., booze—for sale), a drunk teetering on a liquor cask can’t believe his eyes, while his wife Columbine makes a face and curses the traders.
Towards the right, a hunchback (“Hamburger Judas?”) runs with a bellows, for pumping up stock. To the right, stock-traders divide up clothes they stole from another, while in the crowd are a devil or two to coax them all along.

While strolling thru downtown São Paulo, we passed the stock market ( Bovespa – A Bolsa do Brazil ) which was open to the public due to a PR campaign to inform the general public about the workings of this institution and expand the stock trade. Of course we didn’t hesitate to go in and see the back ground workings of economic powerhouse Sao Paulo in action. After passing 5 security officers, a metal detector and a frisking we were able to enter the main room where amongst other things a demonstrating of a stock transaction was going involving actual stock traders.
A very friendly Bovespa official showed us around, allowed us to take pictures and told that the local company stock trade is actually not very popular in Brazil.
