A George Betts pic. The first run of 1M42 'Clansman' from Inverness to Euston with 47446. The job was worked by Perth in this direction being remanned at Perth for the run to Mossend, where an AC electric would take over. Note Perth North yard, the lifted avoiding lines on the left and St. Johnstone's Muirton Park floodlights, which is now Asda.

Ironically the floodlights survived and went to the new McDiarmid Park, probably outliving all the railway infrastructure visible in the picture..

Celebrating too soon - a rumour sweeps the St Johnstone support that Livingston have taken the lead against Partick Thistle - a Livingston win would have meant that Saints had won promotion to the SPL.

Sadly for the lad in the middie of this pic the rumour was false - will he get the opportunity to peak again this weekend when St Johnstone host Morton with a win giving them the title

TV presenter and Poppyscotland ambassador Lorraine Kelly joined Dundee United and St Johnstone Football Clubs to back the 2009 Scottish Poppy Appeal. Players from the clubs will wear poppies on their shirts during their respective matches on Saturday 7 November.

Lorraine Kelly joined Dundee United players Jon Daly and Darren Dods, and St Johnstone players Euan McLean and Steven Milne at an event in Dundee’s City Square to launch the poppy shirts.

Poppyscotland, the organisation behind the Appeal, hopes that the support of Dundee United and St Johnstone Football Clubs will help to raise awareness of the Scottish Poppy Appeal in order to raise vital funds for veterans and their families, who may suffer from a number of difficulties as they struggle to adjust to civilian life.

Lorraine Kelly spoke of her support for the Appeal: “As a Dundee United fan I am delighted that my local team and St Johnstone are joining together to ensure that the SPL teams from Dundee and Perth will be wearing poppies. I hope football fans will also support the Scottish Poppy Appeal to ensure that veterans and their families across Scotland receive the help they deserve.”

Ian McGregor, Chief Executive of Poppyscotland, added: “We are delighted that Dundee United and St Johnstone are supporting the Scottish Poppy Appeal by wearing the famous poppy emblem during play this weekend. With many veterans returning from active service suffering from multiple and complex issues Poppyscotland needs to raise funds to provide vital year-round support.”

Notes to Editors:

Dundee United Director Derek Robertson said, "Dundee United is delighted to support this year's Scottish Poppy Appeal by having our players wear the poppy on our first team kit on Saturday. We hope this raises awareness of the Appeal and encourages others to participate and donate generously."

The 2008 Scottish Poppy Appeal raised a record £2 million in 2008 – a 16% increase on the year before

Poppyscotland supports more veterans and dependants in Scotland than any other veterans’ charity. This is in two ways:

- Directly through financial assistance – last year we helped 1,424 individuals

- Indirectly by giving grants to veterans’ organisations who specialise in veterans’ issues, such as Combat Stress and Erskine. In the last five years we have given over £1 million to Erskine alone.

Poppyscotland supports veterans of all ages and, increasingly, those from recent and current conflicts, namely Iraq and Afghanistan.
