Finished piecing the top to the Numbers quilt today. Yay! {finished version here}

This is where I need help: I think I need to add a border... maybe the IKEA numbers fabric (which has a white ground). Would that look weird? If not that, then what? A solid? (What color?) A pattern? (What type?) Or should I just skip the border??

This is only my second quilt (my first, a rag quilt, made several years ago), so any ideas would be much appreciated!!

OTHER INFO:

• The binding will be a small stripe that incorporates all of the colors in the quilt.

• Inspired by this, this, and this created by stitchindye. (LOVE her work -- if only I could free motion quilt like her!)

• Centers of wonky/improv style log cabins were fussy cut from an IKEA duvet cover (fabric is TERRIBLE quality and I had to add fusible interfacing to back it). I was going to use one large piece of the IKEA numbers fabric as backing for the quilt, but since the quality is so bad, I won't. Instead the backing will be pieced but I'll still incorporate large pieces of the IKEA numbers fabric (as large as I can go with the fusible interfacing).

This quilt is being made to go into my girls' primary-colored playroom.

Looking at the top now, I don't like the placement of the brown squares -- they are too close together. It took me a LONG time -- more than a hour total? -- to figure out where to place the blocks and it looks like I goofed. If you notice, each number is represented twice, in a big and small version. The big and small versions of the numbers alternate throughout the quilt.

Meaning, in the first row, it's a BIG two, small five, BIG zero, small eight.

Second row: small seven, BIG one, small three, BIG four.

It was tricky getting the placement of the blocks so that two colors didn't touch, so that two of the same numbers weren't touching, so that the same color didn't appear in the same row or column more than once. I was about to pull my hair out, then settled on this iteration. Looks like I should have worked on it more!

Inspired by this pillow www.flickr.com/photos/stitchindye/415024281/ I finally got around to making one for my own couch.

The lapped zipper in the back is a change from my usual side-seam invisible zipper and I really like it this way. That way I could bind the edges of the pillow.

The quilting was done with my embroidery module. It's just a bunch of squares in chartreuse. Maybe you can see them if you zoom in.

For stitchindye's mini quilt monday. I realize there's no perspective here, but these are the best photos I had time to take. It's about 15"x15".

Improvisationally pieced... 14 vintage fabrics and some new. Pieced binding finished by hand.

Fairy quilt for a patient Doll Quilt Swap 3 quilter. Could this be your quilt?

Inspired by the astoundingly talented Malka of a stitch in dye, who has machine-quilted some wonderful numbers quilts using this fabric.

Hand-quilted wholecloth quilt of fabric from Ikea's Siffror child's bedding set.

Bound using this continuous no-lump binding technique with Michael Miller Party Dot in black.

Hanging dowel inserted into the brilliant Terry Chilko's Fast Finish hanging triangles.

A touch over 14" square.

not sure if I made it in time for actual mini quilt monday at a stitch in dye, but it was an excellent way to end a hectic day! Blogged here.

blocks were made by overdying commercial fabrics using plexi resists. I learned about this process from Malka's work stitchindye.blogspot.com/

My camera doesn't like that gold in the binding. it is more subtle in person.

Un bleu profond et sans nuage : voilà le ciel d'hiver de nos régions méditerranéennes... La lumière de fin d"après-midi inonde le quilt et fait ressortir ses teintes chaudes.

Adaptation with Moda "stitchindye" fabrics. 16 x 18 inches. Who says all the blocks have to be the same size? (It sure would look better on a lime wall. lol)

I saw Malka's quilt on her flickr page and I have the same hanging system. It was just the inspiration I needed. We have discussed before how we seem to like a lot of the same things...

Dear Partner,

these are my likes for the 3. round ... =)))

I love all the colors in the center ... rainbow colors are my absolute favourite ... please don't use any black and white, unless you'll create some highlights or something like that ...

I love "wonky" and curve-based designs ... Churn Dashes are a save bet, X+Crosses as well ...

Hope you'll have fun to sew for me ... Thanks a lot for all your efforts, even now ... =D

Lovely regards!

Kirsten

I finally made a dress! That I like! That I will actually wear! (To work no less!)

Dress: Made by me!

Shoes: Merona (from Target)

Specs on the dress

Pattern: Simplicity 2584, Cynthia Rowley, View B

Fabric: Green linen blend

Price: app. $20 for pattern and fabric

Time: app. 3 nights after work, 1 night to cut, 2 nights to sew (could've gone faster but my serger crapped out on me on day 2)

Inspired by: stitchindye's version

Mods: I cut out View B which has sleeves but I didn't like the way they looked for this type of fabric. Instead, I just followed the armhole facing directions for View C. I also couldn't do the narrow hem on this dress because the linen frayed too much. Instead I went with a 1" hem (1/2" folded over twice). Also, I cut out a Size 10 even though I'm a Size 12. I think that was the right choice as I wanted a closer fitting dress. Finally, I did not do the exposed zipper as suggested by the pattern. I instead went with a centered zipper application. When I make this dress again I will definitely go with an invisible zipper.

Pros: Very finished and professional looking dress without too much headache. Linen or a medium weight fabric seems to be a good choice for this dress. The dress is SUPER comfortable and very easy to wear.

Cons: I forgot how easily linen wrinkles...this is how wrinkled the dress looks just minutes after I gave it a quick press. The dress is a little short for my tastes, particularly to wear to work, but I figure since it's just me in my office alone most of the day, there's no harm in showing a little leg. :)

Larger sized versions of stitchindye's round and round coasters from her book Fresh Quilting. Handy for putting between non-stick frypans to stop them getting scratched.
