Round 4 of the #stillflickring recreation-project. This is the old version.
.
It is still about depending on yourself.
1/10
So I never normally write captions or feel particularly gifted at story telling, but this time I felt like it needed it, so here goes. 10 years ago I found a website called Flickr and fell head over heels in love with photography. It made me want to pick up a camera and be creative, but I didn’t know what to shoot. I went through varying degrees of bullying through high school that left me feeling so insecure in myself and my appearance that I refused to have my photo taken. I felt like the only way to begin to overcome it, was to try and start taking self portraits like all of these talented people I looked up to and aspired to be like that I saw on Flickr. I wanted to be able to look at myself again. It was my therapy when I needed it most. Along the way I ended up somehow finding a group of people who were so friendly and supportive when it was so needed, and ultimately I ended up meeting a pretty incredible guy and moving 5000 miles to be with him. Thanks Flickr.
The beautiful Liisa decided to get some people back together and create a project where we challenge each other to recreate a series of our old images over the next few months, and I’m so grateful for her and her want for more community again.
This is my recreation of an old self portrait you can see here.

Here comes another recreation for #StillFlickring <3
Check out the old image HERE to understand this :)
Again and again within this project i am so surprised how much me and my life actually changed since the old photos. 8 years later.... Still Laura but also a whole other person. In 2010 i still thought i will be an architect. And now i am living my dream and every day working really hard but working on something i love with all my heart and mind.
And let go... because yes life gets busy, but we all need to set aside some time for ourselves 🙏

Sixth instalment of the #StillFlickring project! Every 2 weeks, each of us in the group (Liisa, Havard, Savannah, Laura, Jana, Brittany, Christian, Sophie and Ethan) will challenge another to re-create an older self portrait dated back 2013 or earlier. It’s a way for us to see how far we’ve come as artists and how we’d interpret the concept today 💙💗
This round the ever so talented Laura picked my shot! I was 19 when I took the original 😲 It was an experimental shot then and an experimental shot now haha! Hope you like it. I have another shot without the flower that I nearly posted but I followed advice and posted this one. I’ll show you guys on my story soon. Anyway, I’d love to hear interpretations of you have any ☺️

Original Photo - Overcome by enchanted oddities
And we’ve officially reached the half way mark of the #StillFlickring project!
This round the lovely Jana picked my shot! Back in the day, I was putting my own little twist on the Alice in Wonderland story. With each piece I wrote a few sentences to help explain the concept. The main theme was time... how it was a constant race against the clock and that time haunted her each and every time she took a step in this odd world. As always, I hope you like my new interpretation!
Another round of #stillflickring. Please follow the hashtag to see what the others created this time.
The original image is this.

Biggest thanks to Nadine Kolodziey for helping me with this photo and for spending the afternoon in Sutro Bath with me.

“Original photo - Nature's Way
Another piece for the #StillFlickring project!
This time, Havard challenged me to recreate “Nature’s Way”. Not going to lie, my heart sank when I found out that photo was my challenge. It remains as one of... if not my absolute favourite photograph I’ve taken to date. I surprised myself at the time with how it turned out and still look back on it and love it even more each time. With that said, I knew I couldn’t top it and definitely didn’t want to try but rather re-enter the magical, mystical, foggy green world once again to create somewhat of a sequel...I hope you like it 🌿

If we don't change, we don't grow. If we don't grow, we are not really living 🌿 🍃
Original photo - Stage 1: Infatuation
Here is my next photo for the #StillFlickring project!
This time the ever so talented Ethan challenged me. I have to say, he challenged me all right! I had to re-shoot my concept after not being happy with what I got the first time round. Seemed fitting as the time in which the original photo was taken, I was struggling to come up with a good idea/something I was happy with. I decided to take elements of the original and change it up a bit. Let me know your thoughts! 🌿
Next round of #StillFlickring! Actually I didn't take this image this week as it was simply no time for side-projects but i remembered this image from some months ago that just fits so perfect.
This is the image I meant to recreate.

Please follow #StillFlickring to what the others created 😊

“What defines us is how well we rise after falling” 💫
Well here we are, the final instalment of the #StillFlickring project! Thank you to Liisa for allowing me to take part in this project. It was a true walk down memory lane and I absolutely loved revisiting some of my older pieces. Thank you all so much for your support along the way - it truly is so wonderful reading all of your comments + messages! I think recreations will be something I may continue doing every now and then.
Finally, make sure to check out everyone else involved in the project - (Liisa, Havard, Savannah, Laura, Jana, Brittany, Christian, Sophie and Ethan) 💙💗

#stillflickring is the start of a new project I am happy to be part of. Together with friends I met many years ago on Flickr (where photography and so many friendships and inspiration started) we all recreate images we took 5 or more years ago. Each round another person picks which of my old images I have to recreate. This week Liisa Hole picked mine and I picked one for Jana Stormanns.
THIS is the old image.
Still-FLICKR-ing is an homage to the place where we met. A place that changed my life for the better and I am so thankful for it.
.
As for this image. Yes, it's pretty different from the old one. Mainly it's the golden glitter that connects them and the theme of light and its illusions. Tomorrow I will post another photo that I shot in this process which is so very different again.... But I guess that's the fun of creating. Reinventing yourself and the old ideas.
.
Follow #stillflickring to see what the others created and what all of us will create during the next months! :)
Another round of #StillFlickring.

This is another image which makes me wonder how many people look at an image long enough to notice that something is off with the body.
.
It's so hard to imagine what others see. Or think. Or feel.
Funny how we are so stuck in our own minds and thoughts....
“The Antiquarium”
-
Visiting Italy felt like a trip to the past. The Umbrian valley was a place for keeping antiques and remnants of the past. Time stood still among the cobblestone streets and the meaning of the word “old” only referred to things over 1000 years old, while “new” things were less than 500 years old. Ancient texts and images were integrated into ordinary life and considered normal. While I walked the streets, I was filled with pure fascination and looked at everything with a foreigner’s gaze. I had never seen things this “old.”

Once, when I was visiting the commune of Citta di Castello I wandered into a domed hall, only to look up and be faced with images of grotesque decorations, beautifully rendered and preserved over centuries. I fell in love with the imagery and this led to the creation of this image.

I had so much fun with being a bit more creative on this photo and getting to play in photoshop more than usual. It feels like a more mature image to the original, which is fitting since I have grown so much since 2012 when I took the other one. GO check it out!

So as I hinted two days ago, I am super honoured to be taking part in a new group project created by Liisa. For those who aren’t aware, my photography journey began here on flickr back in 2009. It’s where I discovered self portraiture and fine art photography. There was such a strong community back then, a community of teenagers who all shared a passion for photography. We want to reignite that passion and dive into something challenging and new. Every 2 weeks, each of us (Liisa, Havard, Savannah, Laura, Jana, Brittany, Christian, Sophie and Ethan) will challenge another to re-create an older self portrait dated back 2013 or earlier. It’s a way for us to see how far we’ve come as artists and how we’d interpret the concept today 😊
So, I had my good friend Brittany who I have known since those early Flickr days and have been luckily enough to meet since then pick my first photo. I was so, so happy to see “mourning her Romeo” pop up because it’s one photo of mine that I still think about and look at regularly. The original concept was to create a world in which Juliet chose not to take her own life after Romeo.
The original piece is so important to me because it marked a moment in time where I had a bit of an epiphany (which I go on to explain in a super long description on Flickr hah). It was the moment when I decided I was going to create. I was going to be an artist that created worlds and concepts... an artist that told a story. I was so proud of how it turned out and still to this day, love the photograph. So, I didn’t stray too far away from what was originally created but just added in some differences. I was so close to posting the sunset sky which so many of you recommended - don’t worry I agreed... right up until yesterday when I took time to really look at the clouds and realised that was the way to go as after all, I am referencing a great tragedy.
If you want to join our challenge and have an old self portrait of yours you’d want to recreate with a new perspective, please do! Make sure to use our hashtag #StillFlickring so we can check it out :) xx 💙💗

A new project where a bunch of us who started photography on Flickr many years ago challenge each other to recreate images from 4+ years ago!
This was the image I was challenged to recreate [https://www.flickr.com/photos/jamagirlbritt0410/5911388700/in/dateposted-public/]
We'll be posting all images on Instagram with the hashtag #StillFlickring, and we hope you'll join us by challenging yourself to recreate old work!
It's been a while since I've posted on here so I just wanted to say hey! Maybe we can bring Flickr back a little with this project ;)
These type of shots can be difficult to get. Water needs to be clear and the waves need to be hollow. You have to time it perfectly and dive down early before the wave breaks.
I am strictly using the Sony rx100 IV. I sold my a77 and lenses. It’s been a great transition and I feel I’ve completely simplified my life with this camera. No more lugging around equipment when I’m traveling. The rx100 has surpassed my expectations of what a “point and shoot” camera can achieve and it’s conceived me enough to say adios to carrying all that extra equipment.

A prequel or sequel (depending on your interpretation) an old self portrait you can see here. It feels kind of fitting that this was just as embarrassing to take.

This round the beautiful Sophie picked my shot. She spoke about how a lot of my work seemed have wider frames and suggested to perhaps go with a closer scene... which is exactly what I ended up doing in the end 🌿
1 more shot to go - how crazy is that?! I hope you’re all enjoying the project as much as I am.

“Sometimes we’re taken into troubled waters not to drown but to be cleansed” 💧
Can’t believe we’re already up to the seventh photo in #StillFlickring. Time is just absolutely flying.
This week Liisa challenged me! When I took the original photo, I wasn’t really in the right headspace to create and whilst I did experiment with layering and editing, I wasn’t thrilled with the final result. It really reflected where my mind was at, which was from what I read last night in the Flickr description, was all over the place due to being faced with things in life that I had no little to no control over. Fast forward to now and I’m in a very similar headspace. It’s been a full on week, my mind is once again a little all over the place and some things are once again out of my control...which is scary and unsettling. So, here’s to hoping the dust settles soon... ☔️
I’m not thrilled with this recreation, but it marks a time in my life and as with any project, there’s ups and downs. It’s all part of the challenge. As always, thanks for always following along, liking + leaving comments/messages. I read every single one and appreciate you all xx
If you follow the same wonderful photographers as I do, you probably already heard about #stillflickring. Alex invited me to join and recreate this old photo of mine. Thanks for the challenge! <3
Since then, a lot has changed. Still searching, but the way looks more beautiful than ever. Not scared, but standing strong against the winds.
Thanks to fabulous human tripod Craig for helping me take this in the last light of the day :)
Many years ago I created a Home series where I carried this old window around with me and took pictures in different places I called home. For this week’s challenge Ethan picked one of those images to recreate. I used the same window and everything (just switched sides).
View the image he picked here: www.flickr.com/photos/jamagirlbritt0410/8556646100
Huge shout out to Brandon for carrying the window down to the falls, being my human tripod, and pushing me to keep taking self portraits in front of others no matter how uncomfortable I was
And so we have image 2 out of 10. Please join us in recreating your old images! It’s a great way to see how much you’ve grown artistically!
See what it's like to be inside the wave as it folds and throws over your head putting you inside and surrounded by liquid.

Original Piece - Weightless Dream
Dreams have an ethereal quality to them, transporting us to different worlds...a new reality. They can be perceived as weightless but in fact carry quite the weight on our minds once we’ve woken up.
✨
Delighted to be back with my next photo for the #StillFlickring project!

This time my brother @cbenetel chose the shot. He’s always never held back his opinions over the years (as I do for his work hah) and has always told me I could have done this concept better lol. I still remember him helping me take the original shot - I was quite pleased with how it turned out actually so I’ve kept it once again, close to the original but transported it into my own style today ✨

↠ self portrait, 2018 vs. 2009 (see the original here!)
who remembers this? ✨
I’m super excited to share this project that I’m apart of. The lovely Liisa has gathered a group of us self portrait photographers that were also active back in the Flickr “old days” to challenge each other every 2 weeks to recreate an old self portrait of ours from 2013 or earlier.
This is really special to me because self portraiture is really what got me started with photography, back in 2005 ♥️
The original is in black and white, and was taken with my old point and shoot during the time I was without my dslr (after it tragically fell in the ocean). I still really love this photo, because it represents the period I was in during that time. I was shooting very experimental work, and feeling inspired by all of the moody conceptual photos present during the good old Flickr days
Today’s self portrait is similar, but different as I wanted it to be more representative of my style now. Vibrant colors, contrast, and of course flowers 🌸😌 the next challenge has me recreating one of my all time favorite self portraits, so I’m really excited to shoot and share that one soon. Keep your eyes peeled 👀. I’ve also decided that with each self portrait during this project, I’m going to try and film a little behind the scenes vlog to go along with them. I’ll be sharing those on my YouTube channel, which you can go subscribe to if you’re interested in that kind of content! I filmed one already for this photo, so I’ll be posting the bts video really soon 🎥.
In the mean time, be sure to follow along and check out everyone else’s work on insta that’s participating in this project, you may see some familiar faces from the Flickr community ✨ we’ll all be using the hashtag #StillFlickring to show that we’re still flickering/flickring after all these years 💕

Original photo - Together we can rise
Eighth instalment of the #StillFlickring project!
This round the lovely Savannah picked my shot. It’s always interesting to look back on where my life was at during the time of the original shot. It reminded me that no matter how many hardships life throws at us, it’s so important to stay strong, focus on those we love and rise above it all.
Also thanks @joelrobison for your tutorial. Used it then and used it now 😜
I've noticed a significant decrease of people using flickr these days including me. But lately I've been inspired especially with work having to be in front of Photoshop the whole day. it takes a toll on you and burns out a lot of my creative juices and it only makes you want to lie in bed after work. It's been like that for me these days. I still love taking photos but it's not the same. And when I get home the shots just rot there in my hdd because im too fed up of seeing too much of Photoshop.
I needed a boost in inspiration and I remembered just looking through everyone's photos here in flickr and it makes me want to create amazing images like you guys! you could say that the passion in this community is so strong that it can rub off to me.
I then decided to go back here after sooo long. Instagram is great but there's just too many travel photos and drone shots that it automatically makes it amazing. there's not enough thought and provocation that it would leave something in someone. whereas in flickr people upload their best images that is carefully thought out and it's always so dramatic. you don't have to worry about how your feed looks and how beautiful and colorful it should look but you can be whatever style you want.
New art!
I'm starting a new conceptual portrait project called Still Flickring, where the idea is to recreate your old works, as chosen by others!
This week I asked my friend Katrina who chose my photo The Blue Boy (will attach in comments)! I loved the original but felt like I never quite fully realised the concept, so it was fun to use all the skills I have now to create what I always wanted to!
So excited to keep making these!

Number 8 for the Still Flickring project, where artists recreate old works as chosen by others!
This recreation was picked by my friend Katrina. The original photo from 4 years ago is in the comments below!
I got really stuck with this one guys. The original concept was really dark, so my plan was to just use the same costume and go from there. I tried a few things that didn't work, and left it for a while. But this week I revisited an old location with my friend Macey and it all came together! Sometimes you just need a field in golden hour.
I wanted to create an image about disillusionment with the world, something I've been feeling and thinking about lately. How the world can be so big and overwhelming, and how we often get blinded by it. There is too much. I need rest and solace. I need the reminder that one day it will all fade away and we will see clearly at last.
Week 6 of Still Flickring, a conceptual photo project where artists recreate old works as chosen by others!
This week my dear friend Annaliese chose a very special self portrait from the start of my 52 weeks project back in 2014 (original in comments!) It was the first time I remember feeling so proud of my art, and it's an image that makes me incredibly nostalgic!
Four years on, I still think the original is magic and perfect, so this is more of a sequel than a recreation. It's about stages of life, the different 'homes' I've inhabited and holding all these memories of the past as I stand here now. As always I wanted to focus on colour (i love pink!) and lightness, two things that embody my style now.
thanks Mum for helping me cut out the houses!
Week 2 of Still Flickring! A conceptual portrait project where artists recreate old works as chosen by others!
This week my friend Carolyn chose my photo The Yellow Man (original in comments!) so here's a fresh take on it.
Ya'll, this one stressed me right out. I reshot it again today at the last minute with a lot of help from my pals, and finally got something I was happy with! I wanted to create an image about how I don't always feel happy like the colour yellow, but I am surrounded by happy things. There is so much yellow to be thankful for. Especially people. Ironically, I couldn't have created this without my friends, so there ya go!
Week 3 of Still Flickring! A conceptual portrait project where artists recreate old works as chosen by others!
This week my friend Macey chose my image The Green Lady (will post original in comments!) and here is my new version. My style has changed a lot since the first one! I don't tend to create dark images anymore, so I went super light and minimal with this one. I wanted to play with the idea of modern office spaces and my obsession with houseplants!
Week 5 of Still Flickring, a weekly conceptual photo project where artists recreate old works as chosen by others!
This week my friend Macey chose a much darker image from my 52 Weeks Project (original in comments below!) that I created back in 2014. I was in a very different place in my life, and I don't remember exactly what it was about, but I wanted to create a lighter version that reflected the place I'm at now. At peace and surrounded by much less fear.
This was made with Macey's help in the beautiful landscape near her home! It turned out different to what I first set out to create and I almost scraped it, but that's all part of the creative process!

It's normal to take a 5 year hiatus right? Well I was persuaded to start up a 365 project again and I think I'm going to post some of them here. I'm on day 20 already on my insta: @nickandthewhale but here I will just post my favorites. Glad to be back.
