This morning I joint led my first landscape/nature photography workshop at Wittenham Clumps and although I did my hardest not to be glued to the back of my camera, whilst papping the group every now and again, I sneaked in some handheld shots. This is what they were treated to this morning.
Thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and I hope to do more. The feedback was amazing so obviously did something right! It was a mixture of beginners to amateur and everything in-between! The only thing that tripped me up was someone asking how to remove the auto focus off the shutter button in a Canon menu system!!
Anyway, another luscious shot of Barrow Hill on a glorious misty morning :) A handheld ISO800 shot that I'm amazed came out as good as it did as I was only half concentrating!!!

Die Weibchen graben in lockeren Sandboden Überwinterungsnester und verbringen dort den Winter. Im April erscheinen sie wieder und kümmern sich um ihre Nachkommenschaft.
Ihren Nachwuchs ernährt sie mit vorzugsweise mit Wolfsspinnen. Sie lähmt die Wolfsspinne mit einem Stich, zieht sie in einen gegrabenen Gang, legt ein Ei auf ihr ab und verschließt dann die Brutzelle. Nach dem Schlüpfen, dient die Wolfsspinne als Nahrungsquelle.
Da eine Spinne pro Nachkommen als Nahrung ausreichen muss, ist die Beute der Wespe meist deutlich größer als sie selbst.
Es kommt auch oft vor, dass sie die gelähmten Spinnen für längere Zeit ablegen und erst dann mit dem Nestbau beginnen.
Hier erbeutete die Frühlings-Wegwespe eine Scheintaranteln (Alopecosa), möglicherweise eine Dickfußpantherspinne (Alopecosa cuneata).

Dieser kleine Stich bildet den Col de la Bonette in den französischen Alpen. Die obere Straße kommt von Jausiers. In Richtung Süden geht es nach Nizza, wie man auf dem einzigen Straßenschild lesen kann. Vom Pass zweigt eine Ringstraße ab, die bis auf 2.802 m zur Cime de la Bonette führt. Die Aufnahme ist vom Gipfel des Bonette in ca. 2.860 m Höhe gemacht. Wegen der fehlenden Vegetation ist es ein steinreicher Anblick ;=)

This is a crazy format to try and show on flickr, but I uploaded a fairly large one you can scroll around on. I like the way the leaves are real large at the bottom of the frame and then pixel sized near the top
The days last longer, more light so blue hours turn more difficult I feel. You still see the bright magenta colours of light in the sky blended with the blues of the falling night.
Took this shot in the Arnhem park Sonsbeek de Witte Villa is also lighted with Pink. Also other places in Arnhem because of the Giro Italia are lighted with pink colours. The Giro Italia is starting tomorrow and passing Arnhem two times and also coming through the city of Huissen I live.

Spanish Synagogue - The most recent synagogue in the Prague Jewish Town. Built in 1868 for the local Reform congregation on the site of the 12th-century Altschul, which was the oldest synagogue in the Prague ghetto. It was called the Spanish Synagogue for its impressive Moorish interior design, influenced by the famous Alhambra.

I was wondering what should I post as my last image of 2007 which in a way symbolizes photographically the year 2007 for me. Of course it has to be a picture from the American Southwest. I found 8 images I had taken to make a pano image and tried a new program, Autostich, which is better than the Canon program I had been using and which was able to stich these images together into a 180 degree vista of Bryce.
While primarily an avian photographer, my vision changed when I visited the American Southwest. The pictures of great photographers like Guy Tal and others made the Southwest an obsession for me. There's so much to see and not enough time. So I've made a promise to myself that I'm going to return as many times as I can until I can see and photograph what there is to see. It's a challenge to someone who's landscape experience is Everglades National Park and Florida. Heck when I visited the Southwest this year it was my first time outside the state of Florida since 9/11.
As a Florida boy I felt like I had seen the hand of God when I saw Zion & Bryce. When I walked through Antelope Canyon I felt I was in God's presence --- it was so awe inspiring.
My life and vision as an artist changed forever in April 2007. The year 2007 was a prolific year for me. Having shot more images in 2007 than I did for the entire years of 2003-2006.
So I leave all of my flickr friends with the image of Bryce that I saw standing one late afternoon. I was at 7K feet or so where I shot this. The ledge you see in the middle of the picture is a straight drop. The air is thin there, but it is clean and refreshing. When you stand here, you find peace.
I wish all my friends a Happy New Year and may 2008 be more prolific than 2007.
I've also enjoyed Mike Jones' work a lot. He may be a dumbass, but he's a fine photographer. Congrats to him on his new gig and hopefully we'll hook up in February at the Wave which I was so lucky to land 2 permits for.
Happy New Year to Jill, Jones, Van, Liz, Mr. Clean, Fraggle Red, and the rest of the South Florida posse. So nice to know that there are fellow locals who love South Florida and the Glades as much as I do.

So that's it folks. That was 2007. The new year is around the corner and I will start the year in the desert. Nevada and Death Valley will be a challenge. February will hopefully take me back to Page, Arizona. And I'll spend plenty of time in the Glades, Wako, Green Cay, Fort DeSoto, Osceola County, Viera, and the Keys. I'm really looking forward to heading out once again with James Shadle on his boat when spoonie season comes around. If any of you are ever in the St. Pete area and want to take pictures of spoonbills until your arms fall off, you must go out with James. You will not be disappointed.
Finally, as nature photographers, God is the real artist and we are the scribes. As nature photgraphers it is our duty to bring God's beauty to all to appreciate. I hope that in my humble way I've managed to share some of the beauty of Florida and the American Southwest, with all of you from around the world that have not seen these wonderful places.

A stitch of two photos, one of the train, wait till it passes then swing right to the summit marker. I took more but only needed the one extra photo. No need to make it more complex than it needs to be.
A vertical stich of 9 handheld images of the interior of this beautiful Orthodox church in San Francisco. We were fortunate to visit on Sunday morning and I was allowed to take pictures of the interior. Best viewed on a large screen
The Holy Virgin Cathedral, also known as Joy of All Who Sorrow (Russian: Радосте-Скорбященский собор), is a Russian Orthodox cathedral in the Richmond District of San Francisco. It is the largest of the six cathedrals of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia.
The cathedral was designed by Oleg N. Ivanitsky, and features five onion domes covered in 24 carat gold leaf.[6] The "incredible beauty" of the interior, which is "lined by icons, religious paintings, and mosaics, and lit by a voluminous chandelier" can be seen only by those who attend religious services and go on visitation days

Saal des Firmaments ...
Über dem Eingangsportal in der Mitte des Säulengangs befindet sich eine Gedenktafel, die
daran erinnert, dass die Familie Chiericati hier 1782 Papst Pius VI. als Gast beherbergte.
Von der Vorhalle aus gelangt man links zu dem im 16. Jahrhundert errichteten südlichen
Flügel, in dessen Sälen noch die Dekorationen aus den Jahre 1557-58 erhalten sind, die sich eindeutig an den Zyklen inspirieren, mit denen der von Giulio Romano errichtete
Palazzo Tè in Mantua ausgeschmückt ist.
Die weiß-goldenen Stuckarbeiten an den Gewölben aller Säle dieses Flügels sind das Werk von Bartolomeo Ridolfi.
Der erste rechteckige größere Saal wird Saal des Firmaments genannt und ist mit Fresken von Domenico Brusasorzi ausgeschmückt.
Der zentrale Ausschnitt enthält das Bild "Phaethon lenkt den Wagen der Sonne und Diana den des Mondes", das von
einer komplexen polygonalen Gliederung umgeben ist, die durch Eliodoro Forbicinis Grotesken umrahmt wird:
Die größeren mehrfarbigen Felder enthalten Bilder der im 16. Jahrhundert bekannten Konstellationen, die von Stichen Dürers abgeleitet wurden.
Die kleineren monochromatisch gestalteten Ausschnitte enthalten klassische, an antiken Münzen inspirierte Figuren.
Man beachte die freizügigen Darstellungen des 16. Jahrhunderts, die sich an der Antike orientieren ... ich werde noch ein Detail bringen, damit Phaeton und Diana besser erkannt werden können ...
Phaethon (Mythologie)
Phaeton ist auch als Namenspatron in Wissenschaft und Technik bedeutsam.
Phaetons Sturz – römischer Sarkophag (1. Jh. n. Chr.)
Phaethon, auch Phaeton oder Phaëthon (altgriechisch Φαέθων Phaéthōn, deutsch ‚der Strahlende‘, von φαίνειν phaínein, deutsch ‚scheinen‘), ist in der griechischen Mythologie bei Hesiod der Sohn des Kephalos und der Göttin Eos, der Schwester des Sonnengottes Helios. Seit Euripides (5. Jahrhundert v. Chr.) ist Phaethon der Sohn des Helios und der Klymene oder der Rhode, also ein Neffe der Eos.
Phaethon, der Sohn des Helios, wird zum Beispiel in Platons Timaios erwähnt. Die bekanntesten Varianten des Mythos stammen von Hesiod und von Ovid, der in seinen Metamorphosen 1,747–2,400[3] die ausführlichste und bis heute kanonische Lesart der Erzählung entwickelt hat.
Darstellung des Ovid
Als Phaethon heranwächst, spricht ihm Epaphos, der Sohn der Io und des Jupiter, die göttliche Abstammung von Sol ab. Die Mutter Klymene versichert Phaethon, dass er der Sohn des Sonnengottes sei, und rät, den Vater im Sonnenpalast aufzusuchen und ein Zeugnis seiner Vaterschaft einzufordern. Sol, der Sonnengott, der ihn im Palast aufnimmt und als Sohn anerkennt, verpflichtet sich durch einen Eid, dem Sohn ein Geschenk seiner Wahl zu gewähren.
Phaethon erbittet sich nun, für einen Tag den Sonnenwagen lenken zu dürfen. Sol versucht, seinen Sohn von diesem Plan abzubringen – jedoch vergeblich. Phaethon besteigt, als die Nacht zu Ende geht, den kostbaren und reich verzierten Sonnenwagen des Vaters. Das Viergespann rast los und gerät bald außer Kontrolle. Phaethon verlässt die tägliche Fahrstrecke zwischen Himmel und Erde und löst eine Katastrophe universalen Ausmaßes aus.
Ovid berichtet:
„Überall dort, wo die Erde am höchsten ist, wird sie vom Feuer ergriffen, bekommt Spalten und Risse und dörrt aus, weil ihr die Säfte entzogen sind. Das Gras wird grau, samt seinen Blättern brennt der Baum, und das trockene Saatfeld liefert seinem eigenen Untergang Nahrung […] Große Städte gehen mit ihren Mauern unter, und der Brand legt ganze Länder mit ihren Völkern in Asche.“
Ätiologisch erklärt Ovid die dunkle Hautfarbe der „Athiopier“ damit, dass der Sonnenwagen dicht über sie hingerast sei, wodurch ihnen „das Blut nach oben gestiegen“ und sie dadurch schwarz geworden seien. Auch sei so die Wüste in Libyen entstanden, die Sahara.
Erst Jupiter, von der „alma Tellus“ (so viel wie Mutter Erde) um Hilfe gerufen, bereitet der drohenden Weltvernichtung ein Ende und schleudert einen Blitz. Der Wagen wird zertrümmert und der Wagenlenker Phaethon stürzt in die Tiefe, wo er tot im Fluss Eridanus landet.
Seine Schwestern, die Heliaden, weinen um ihn und werden am Ufer in Pappeln verwandelt, von denen die Tränen in Form des als Bernstein bekannten Pflanzenharzes herabtropfen. Auch der ligurische König Cycnus, ein Verwandter Phaethons und sein Geliebter, eilt untröstlich herbei. Er wird von Apoll aus Mitleid in einen Schwan (lateinisch cycnus und cygnus) verwandelt.
Die Inschrift auf dem Grabstein lautet nach Ovid:
„Hier ruht Phaethon, der Lenker des väterlichen Wagens; zwar konnte er ihn nicht meistern, starb aber, nachdem er Großes gewagt hatte.“
Auffällig ist nach Siegmar Döpp, dass Ovid den Katasterismos, die Verwandlung Phaethons in einen Stern, die in anderen antiken Texten wie den Dionysiaka des Nonnos von Panopolis (5. Jahrhundert) erzählt wird, weglässt. Dies hat seines Erachtens seinen Grund in der Komposition des Werkes:
Die Entstehung der Welt aus dem Chaos und ihre Zerstörung in der deukalionischen Flut erzählt Ovid im ersten Buch des Metamorphosen als Verwandlungen. Der Phaethon-Mythos, der am Ende des ersten und im ersten Drittel des zweiten Buches erzählt wird, stellt nach Döpps Meinung darauf bezogen ebenfalls eine Metamorphose dar:
nicht die des Namensgebers, sondern die Rückverwandlung der ganzen Welt im Feuer, die durch göttliches Eingreifen noch einmal verhindert worden sei.
