It took a couple of hours to get this shot. Two people were also lighting the model and the sculpture.
One number greater, sequentially, from the last photo posted. Here's Wisconsin Central SW1200 #1236, a bit more clearly a former Southern Pacific unit (in this case #2287). Not only are the SP-style numberboards and lighting packages distinct from #1235, but the lettering is as well. This is the case for many of WC's early switcher schemes, which include a riff on the "pine tree" theme on SW1500s. Photo taken by Mike Hoff at Stevens Point, Wi on September 9, 1988.
I was happy with my shots of M357 and even though I reached Stevens Point the same time they did I wasn't looking for anything until I heard a southbound who was cleared for takeoff once M357 arrived. I figured the outbound was worth a look and I always like to record the ever-evolving scene here at the east end.
The standard GEVO wasn't all that exciting and upon processing the photo I found myself more interested in the cars on M357. In recent years I've been seeing a lot of autoracks just about everyday. I've also noticed plenty of new ones with an "hourglass" logo on the side but never gave it too much thought. The near autorack in this photo looked "bent-up" to me at first. A closer look revealed that it was built that way. It's also one of the hourglass cars. So it was off to the Google machine to read up on what the hourglass design is all about. It's a car built with additional width for better access to the inside for loading/unloading autos. The hourglass moniker stems from the center of the car that narrows down to a standard autorack width allowing it to meet the clearance requirements on curves. Notice how the roof of the hourglass car is the same size as a standard car but the wall posts and panels extend out a few extra inches. At the center of the car they angle in for the "swing" allowance. Another hourglass car is adjacent to the trailing unit of the southbound. July 21, 2024.
I wish I could share with you how these two burners sounded- it simply does not compare to today's locomotives. These babies ROARED, turbo's screaming. My only regret is that I didn't take more pictures / video of them.

An eastbound CN stack train holds tight at Rocky Run siding west of Stevens Point, WI. The spring peepers were in full concert, and complimented the sound of the idling locomotives. In less than two minutes, a westbound out of Point would slide by and the crew could complete the final 2 miles of their journey from the Twin Ports.
#18 with three GP30's--->WC715,WC713,WC712. I'm pretty sure this was the only time I got 3 GP30's together. I wonder if this factory is still there?

Wisconsin Central's early roster was made up mostly of former SOO geeps and BN SD 45's. This scene at Steven's Point, WI in January 1990 is dominated by GP 30's.

This view has WC train L023-24 rolling into Stevens Point Yard with the usual outrageous mix of smaller units- at the time, local power used at Neenah and Appleton was maintained at Stevens Point. This Neenah-Point local was used to shuffle them back and forth as needed. Fond du Lac, while much closer to Neenah, was busy maintaining the bigger WC road power, as well as all the local power from Fond du Lac, Waukesha, Schiller Park, and Green Bay.
For the record, this lashup is WC 2251 (GP30), 2551 (GP35), 2056 and 2051 (both GP35M units, de-turboed GP35's originally from MP), and 1508 (ex-Algoma Central GP9 chop nosed by WC).

Retracing the route countless Wisconsin Central trains have taken to and from Stevens Point, WI; Canadian National train Q119 drifts around the curve near County Road J on the eastern side of town after having passed through the small town of Stockton. The cross country intermodal train is headed up by one of CN’s former Oakway Leasing SD60s the railroad acquired in 2013.

The brewery is the fifth-oldest continuously operating brewery and the third-oldest privately owned brewery in the nation. The brewery survived Prohibition by producing near beer and soft drinks. Today they brew a number of beers plus hard cider and soft drinks. Among craft breweries, the company's sales volume ranks 25th in the nation as of 2015.

More like "Shit Power Saturday", this westbound Wisconsin Central train is stopped at the Stevens Point, Wisconsin depot either getting a re-crew or preparing to depart the yard on August 4th, 1988 with WC 717-6537. This 1988 trip with my dad was the only chance I got growing up to take GB&W, WC, Soo Line and the end of the Milw in Wisconsin type photos. I have not visited this spot since 1988.
WC GP30 #717 was built by EMD as Soo Line #717 in May of 1963.
WC SD45 #6537 was built by EMD as BN #6537 in August of 1971.
