I’ve been using my unemployed time between filling out applications to learn set building; I set up a studio in my garage and built this surface for a specific stop motion project that I’ve been mulling over for quite some time. I decided to use it for a quick Lego shot.

I’m having a blast learning what works and what doesn’t and have learned some excellent tricks by trial and error. I still say the best way to learn anything is to start. I utilized some aluminum screen, cardboard tubes, floor coating samples, drywall putty, spray paint, coconut shell carbon, wire, ducktape, and some old bird feed I found in the pantry… basically anything I can think of and reuse in some way. I think it’s coming together nicely.

I’ve always found great wonder in the movie Spirited Away. Especially the No Face character Kaonashi. Some sort of spirit that amplifies the desires of the heart; and wanting something greater. The tranquility of a quiet and peaceful life full of the small things that give life meaning.

When I was setting up this shot there was a fat little bee that was bright yellow that kept swooping in; apparently I had placed Kaonashi near a hole at the base of the figure that was the bees home. It landed then crawled quickly into the ground. I did a bit of research and these are solitary digger bees that are common in Arizona and fitting for this shot. I only captured a blurry shot of the bee as I was shooting manual focus. I posted it on IG along with a stereoscopic version of this shot that really pops!

Roastin’ mallows in the boondocks

I saw this creeper figure at target and immediately had this picture in mind; roasting marshmallows with the demogorgon. All shot under a tree in my backyard. The flames were created with a couple of pieces of chopped cellophane lit from beneath. I made the roasting sticks and marshmallows with some wire and polymer clay. Anyhow; things hardly every come together when I plan a shot and this was the exception!

Some surfaces would not be explorable without the help of the Exo Suit. WASP-178b is one such inhospitable exoplanet. It’s so hot that the shady side has silicone dioxide clouds that cool enough to rain rock. The atmosphere moving from hot to cool sides transfer at 2,000 miles per hour making the transition areas unexplored.

Captured with the vintage Helios 44_2 lens on my Sony a7r. I made this surface utilizing aluminum screen which I bent and shaped and then applied spray foam onto it. I then sprinkled coconut shell carbon and then spray painted it grey. Turned out awesome! I found out the spray foam also will glow when a light is put underneath; an unexpected bonus!

The intensity of the loud buzzing filled his mind and whole awareness. Got this figure from Minifigure.com. Such a cool detailed rendition of Ebenezer Scrooge. The book even has the front page in tiny but legible print. I purchased my wife a remake of the original Christmas Carol book with a red cover last year and it worked perfectly here as a base.

So my kiddos were out in the backyard and found what they though was a dead lizard in a toy bin that collected a lot of rain water. My boy came in with this T-Rex saying a dead lizard was on it; they had poked it to make sure. I stopped him just as he was throwing it in the trash bin. I looked closer and the lizards eye opened. Apparently he was too cold to move, and had latched himself to the head of T-Rex. I placed him in another bin with a warming lamp. I got a few shots because when does this ever happen? After about 30min my daughter reached in to pet the lizard and it bolted as she let out a multitude of shrieks. I let the lizard go on our wall and he scrambled off... fun stuffs!

I purchased this Leviathan figure from Fortnite made by Jazwares. I am very impressed by the quality of the figure - and it’s super poseable with 40 point of articulation!

We went to the riparian preserve in Gilbert, AZ over the weekend and I snapped this shot with the vintage Helios 44-2. I’ve been using the lensbaby Twist 60 quite often but I just love the look of the Helios. It really cannot be replicated. It’s just got so much character in the blur.
