That's the split-image microprism screen. It's basically taken from a screen meant for older film SLRs (believe Minolta) and then cut on a template to fit the Rebel / Rebel XT/ Rebel XTi / 20D / 30D.
You will lose the red marks indicating active focal points when you install this screen (although you can still see which AF point is active in the rear LCD). Autofocus will still work fine.
In the center is where the image is split. Even when slightly out of focus, the image will split down the middle split line and shift slightly. Two halves of the image will line up perfectly when the system is in perfect focus. The ring of microprisms also amplifies the "out of focus" effect - it'll pixelate the image around the split area unless it's focused correctly.
