A fishing vessel at Thorup Strand in Denmark

I dearly love finding dandelions in my garden, whether they are the yellow flowers or the soft puffs of seeds ready to take to the wind. Generally I leave the dandelion there (unless I am removing weeds, and then I say goodbye to my little friends). However, this one time I decided to break the dandelion puff off of the stem to take inside the house for a photo session. The moment I removed the puff, the bottom of the stem curled into these two tightly wound circles. What a treat!

Platycodon grandiflorus is a perennial plant which is commonly grown in mountains and fields. It is 40 to 100 centimeters high and has thick roots, and white juice comes out when the stem is cut. Leaves are 5 to 12 centimeters long, with narrow ends and teeth on the edges.

Flowers bloom purple or white in July and August, with one or several running upward at the end of the circle. The flower crown is divided into five branches in the shape of an open bell.

Dew drops on a dark purple leaf. One of my new favorite drought tolerant plants is the Cotinus Royal Purple shrub/tree. The leaves are deep purple and crimson, almost black in appearance, while the stem portions light up with beautiful vibrant greens, yellows, and oranges. The 'smoke bush' produces beautiful tufts of blossoms that resemble smoke, hence its name.

I have been thinking lately that I need to take some wider angle photos and it is difficult when I enjoy the world close up and macro. My next goal should be wide lens work of people and places.

It is in late autumn when the leaves are on the ground that you notice the character of the leaf. The veins and stem have always been there but are not as noticeable in the summer when the leaf is green and still connected to the tree.

" These are the people who posted black squares for George Floyd but stayed silent while 18,000 Palestinian children were murdered. The ones who filled their bios with Ukraine flags. The ones who marched for Stop Asian Hate. The ones who railed against Trump from the comfort of their ivory towers and Starbucks cups. They could speak with passion about every other injustice, but when my people were starved, bombed, and buried alive, they had nothing to say. The ones I thought I knew, the ones I am ashamed to have ever called friends."

I thought these had disappeared from the La Crosse River Marsh when I no longer saw them in their usual spot. But I happened to find another bunch in a wetter, greener area.

for Macro Mondays. Compared with the large bowl, the long stems on my posh wine glasses seem very slender and fragile, and I always take great care when handling them.

(EXPLORE) I have to say.....seeing these large parrots in the wild is quite a thrill. We only find them as pets here in North America, and now I completely appreciate why these animals should be kept in the wild.

During a stop-over between Monteverde and Liberia, our group heard quite a racket behind the store parking lot. A dozen macaws were high up in the trees obviously enjoying what was growing in them, as many were busy eating the stems and flowers.
