An embryonic stem cell cluster (red and blue) being coaxed to differentiate into nerves (green). The nerves grow radially and express the characteristics of nerves that control movement in vertebrates. The red and blue areas are indicative of specific cell proteins that are present only in stem cells. The implication is that researchers have gained significant insight into the chemical and genetic underpinnings of nerve development from naive cell types (stem cells).

The Government of BC is making a major investment in the BC Biotechnology sector, along with Federal and industry partners. A $138 million state-of-the-art regenerative medicine campus in Burnaby will initially create 675 new bio-tech jobs, and up to 2,170 new jobs by 2031. The facility will help establish Canada as a world leader in the area of regenerative medicine.

Roberto Bolli, M.D., FAHA, FACC, chief of the University of Louisville Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and director of UofL's Institute of Molecular Cardiology in the Department of Medicine and his team receive a $13.8 million award from the National Institutes of Health to study a promising new type of adult cardiac stem cell that has the potential to treat heart failure. The NIH grant is a continuation of a Program Project Grant (PPG) that Bolli and his team were originally awarded in 2005.
