The cells of the single layered epidermis have thickened outer walls and are overlaid with a well-developed cuticle. Numerous stomata are regularly spaced over the epidermal surface.

A narrow outer cortex of several layers of densely packed photosynthetic parenchyma cells is bound on its inner and outer edges by small radially arranged bundles of thick walled sclerenchyma cells.

The large inner cortex consists of a net like aerenchyma, interspaced with large radially arranged air pockets.

Well developed vascular bundles are found at the intersections the aerenchym strands. Because of this arrangement a central vascular stele is absent.

Within each vascular bundle proto and metaxylem are arranged in a V shape with phloem situated in between and above the metaxylem. A protoxylem lacunae is usually formed. The closed vascular bundles are wrapped in a bundle sheath of thick walled sclerenchyma cells. Vascular cambium is absent preventing the formation of secondary tissues.

About FabLab

FabLab is the FIRST AND ONLY television series focused on attracting girls and teens to the worlds of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in an entertaining and informative way. It can be seen weekends nationwide (check local listings for station, day and time on the local FOX affiliate. “Ask Mayim,” a unique audience interactive element of FabLab and an American Idol-like talent search across the country to find student guest reporters and hosts. The hosts are Kerri Doherty, popular on YouTube for her comedic approach to all things geeky; Cara Santa Maria, a hipster science broadcaster; newcomer Aysia Bell; Madi Vorva, a Teen Choice Pro-Social award winner; and the sole male host, Nick Uhas, a former Big Brother contestant and a YouTube science guru. Celebrity co-hosts and guests will populate the series, each week taped in a new locale to augment that week’s topic. This little program looks for photos on flickr by a given search word. Afterwards, the colors of the photos are analyzed. The color itself gets detected and how often each color is found. This data is the foundation of every stem. Each segment represents one color of the photo, the diameter shows the quantity. The cell resolution in all segments is based on the brightness of the color.

Another result of my apparently endless obsession with glass and light.... Two things that interested me here are (i) the gradient in the light being transmitted through the stem, and (ii) the banding produced by fairly subtle depth variations in the foot of the glass.

Lighting: single diffused halogen from camera left.

Spotted this splendidly fat caterpillar today - and think it might have helped solve a mini mystery. Search revealed it will likely turn into a Toadflax Brocade moth

www.ukmoths.org.uk/species/calophasia-lunula/larva-1/

So this means that the plants it was on are likely purple toadflax (Linaria purpurea) - which I photographed the other week as several of the stems had the mutation "fasciation" - but I couldn't then find out what they were.

Discovery STEM Event at Banneker Middle School. by Jay Baker at Montgomery Co., MD.

Late Friday night, 40 high school girls arrived at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, for a STEM-themed sleepover, ready to learn about careers in Science, technology, engineering and math. The educational event offered young women a chance to meet working female scientists and to discover opportunities for women in STEM-related professions.

The teens kicked off the third annual STEM Girls Night In with an astronaut Q&A, talks from female scientists across disciplines and a collection of hands-on activities. The night culminated in a three-hour Mars rover competition and concluded with a late-night showing of “Hidden Figures.”
