These students from Kashmere, North Early College, and Wheatley High Schools worked in cooperative groups to solve a real world problem. Each group of 3 to 4 students posed as an engineering firm that would submit a robotics solution to a geophysics problem. Teams used the LEGO Mindstorm NXT robot to design a vehicle that could climb to the top of a Mountain to retrieve rocks that stored energy. Their vehicle should be able to climb the mountain and continue its motion as the slope of the mountain increased. The team whose robot climbed the highest would win the bid with my company.

Unlocking the potential of Girls in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics for a Sustainable Future for all.

The first 2018 STEM Camp of Excellence is taking place from 9 to 13 April 2018, in Machakos Girls' High School, to inspire and nurture the passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics in young people.

The first STEM Camp for 2018 will take place at Machakos Girls’ High School and will include Mentorship and Career Talks in STEM, a training on coding and Robotics as well as linkages with university and Industry through visits and demonstrations. The talks on subject uptake include physics, Engineering mathematics technology and other applied Sciences. Moreover, the visits to learning and work environments will expose the girls to industries to guide them on how to relate the subjects they learn in school to the real world of work and their daily lives, through demonstrations and practice. For the Camp of 2018, UNESCO has partnered with the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE), Microsoft Africa, Airbus Foundation, Safaricom, Golden Africa Kenya Ltd., and Machakos University. The counties of Machakos, Kitui, Makueni and Kajiado have been selected fro the UNESCO Scientific Camp of Excellence for 2018. A total of 150 secondary school girls and 27 of their teachers will be participating in the Camp.

It is of ground-breaking importance to inspire girls to reach their full potential, to teach and lead by example, to create opportunities and challenge stereotypes. It is possible to achieve the two Sustainable Development Goals, and their meaningful contributions, namely in Quality Education (SDG 4) and Gender Equality (SDG 5). It is also in this way that Africa’s Agenda 2063 will be made a reality, namely on Aspiration 6: An Africa whose development is people-driven, relying on the potential of African people, especially its women and youth, and caring for children.
