Bartolomé Island is named after Sir Bartholomew James Sulivan, an English naval lieutenant who participated in Darwin's voyage on the Beagle. The island is located to the east of Santiago Island. The eastern part of the island consists of volcanic cones, while the western part is a peninsula with several rock formations, including Pinnacle Rock, a steep volcanic rock.

A long winding street called Steep Hill, built on a very steep hill in Lincoln .. with a lopsided lamp post:)

Easy going down and some conveniently placed benches to rest on the way up:)

Bologna "la Rossa" ("the Red", an epithet evidently due to more than its left-leaning politics) seen from the roof of the medieval tower Torre Prendiparte.

The tower, bastion and symbol of power of the Prendiparte family in the Middle Ages, is still today private property. It is currently rent as an exclusive bed-and-breakfast residence for no more than one couple of guests at a time. Entrance hall, bedroom, kitchen, dining room and other (narrow) spaces are connected by steep stairs in a vertiginous vertical sequence, finally leading to the rooftop panoramic terrace 60 meters above ground.

This is a foggy November scene from Dimmingsdale, a local steep, wooded valley with a series of ponds. It's enchanting at any time of year but the thing I love here is the rosy blush of Autumnal colour pierced by the icy blue of the water with it's reflection from the fog and light above.

I hope this brings nice relaxing moment before the week ahead dear friends, we all need to step outside of the the madness in the world, if only for a few seconds.

Paradise made of volcanic rock

Vineyards, tropical fruits, exotic mountain forests: Madeira is not called the "Island of Eternal Spring" for nothing. The volcanic island off the coast of Portugal has been inhabited for 600 years - first came seafarers, then settlers and tuberculosis sufferers and finally tourists.

Bamburgh Castle on the East coast of Northumberland has been used as a film location since 1920's, featuring in such films as Ivanhoe, El Cid, Mary Queen of Scots, Elizabeth and adaptations of Macbeth.

It is a wonderful castle, open to the public and is known well by Photographers, who often capture it during sunrise hours.

I captured this shot last night, after the many visitors to the area had left the beach.

... for a Peaceful Travel Tuesday!

Even though I thought last year that Madeira is very steep, this year we were convinced by La Palma that it is even steeper, both for hikers and drivers, especially since there are hardly any tunnels on this island and I could not imagine the curviness of most of the roads before ...

It was very exhausting to drive, but behind every bend a new view opened up ... :-))

There is lots of walking up and down very steep steps at Macchu Picchu to see the site - not for the faint-hearted

At Madeira's eastern tip, the dry, windswept basalt Ponta de São Lourenço juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. The island's dramatic, varied terrain results in a rich, complex wine with a history steeped in history.

This is the hill I am climbing to reach Loch Phadruig. Fortunately not all of it was this steep but this bit did have me rather panting. The deep Glen of Glen Callater can be seen to the right, but enough of the blethering, let's move!

Tube view. This view is why surfing is the best.

The trail to the bottom of the Ampitheater of South Falls is steep and slippery. Good to have a fence at times.
