Here is a photo of the Davey press. It was given to my husband Ian, by one of his old railway work colleagues. This photo was taken inside Eveleigh Locomotive workshop in Redfern NSW Australia this was taken back in 1976, before Ian and his old work colleague started.

An early stock certificate for the Manheim, Petersburg, and Lancaster Turnpike or Plank Road Company, which established a private turnpike road in northwestern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in the 1850s.

The road was part of what is now designated as Pennsylvania Route 72. As Wikipedia's Route 72 article explains, "The portion of the route between Lancaster and Manheim was chartered on May 9, 1850 as the Manheim, Petersburg, and Lancaster Turnpike, a private turnpike running from Prussia Street in Manheim south to Petersburg (now East Petersburg) and Lancaster."

Not sure it's a success story, but it's done and I now have something that a) pretty much fits and b) actually zips closed that I can wear to a on-the-fancier-side baby shower next weekend.

fabric: stretch cotton (stretch woven. not a knit.) bought last summer with Carrie! (She bought the same fabric in blue and made a much cuter dress with it! But I already have one of those dresses...which I'm not sure fits right now [NOTHING in my closet fits - I have more than 20 skirts I can't zip right now {yes some of those are winter skirts} and I am not joking] but also needs slightly less wide straps)

decorative buttons bought this year w/ mary & doug. yay i actually used something i bought for sewing in the same year! it's a miracle!

I made a muslin of this last weekend and took it out to my mom's house to get some commentary. we decided the back was too big and made some adjustments there ... however, when I made the actual dress, I can't tell if it's the adjustments we made to the back or me just doing a shabby job with either a) the zipper installation or b) the back darts (yes it has 'em) but it fits a bit weird in back. but you know what? I CAN'T SEE IT so I'll just pretend it's not happenin'.

-I have to make one size for the bust and the next bigger size for the hips so some of the triangle-y shape of this on me (compared to on the pattern drawings) is due to my ACTUAL shape.

-added a second button to help keep that pleat closed or at least closed enough that it's not unpleating and creating a second stomach between my boobs and my actual stomach (note it's just a steampress created pleat. hence its ability to come unpressed.)

-sewed back center seam at 1" rather than 5/8" to help tighten up the back which was too loose

-it might look so in this photo, but the front is not too loose at all. don't even have a full inch to pinch on the hips (about how much ease you want in a somewhat straight dress).

-did a "blind hem" on the machine rather than sewing by hand / but it ain't lookin' too blind is it? i've steampressed it a few times since and that line doesn't seem to be going away. i don't really mind though - it looks about the same as if I sewed it down with a seam on top without the visible stitching.

-the sleeves were v. annoying to sew but having them be a circle w/ the fold the hem makes them kind of a nice cap shape.

-this pattern was labeled "fast and easy". i would agree it was pretty fast. not sure on easy. if i had never sewn anything before, i would have found the whole "sewing the facings down with the sleeves crumpled up inside them trying not to catch anything you shouldn't in those seams" a fairly difficult proposition and not one that made a lot of sense even as you were manipulating the fabric. also I am apparently too dumb to figure out the weird instructions for the pockets (I was considering adding them to help visually distract from the rest of me) so that wound up a no go.

This image was taken with a Canon EOS Rebel 2000 film camera, and the negative was scanned with Epson Perfection V600 photo scanner.

Ever since I gave up my beggar monks clothes and began wearing shoes at my new job, it has been a drastic sartorial change, I thought I would wear my malang clothes on Sunday, but I am cooped up at home.. with my grand kids.
