With a prolonged stretch of unseasonably wet grey weather, I can't say I've been inspired to be outside with my camera very much. However, cooler weather seems to be settling in and we even have snow again. All that pristine whiteness makes it such a joy to get out of the house. In this trail mix, two routes were combined into one and the colorful markers caught my eye.
Sure hope that everyone is staying warm and toasty through this early winter storm. We are getting hammered again but it is not near as cold as a few days ago. Lots of snow to shovel!
While out driving on some off-roads the other day I saw what looked like a small bag of garbage beside the road and then noticed that it was moving. It turned out to be about 10 California Quail huddled together against the bitter cold. I'd never even been able to get close to these birds before so it was an exciting moment. Ended up seeing about 30 - 35 of them before it was over with.
This snow is sure cutting into eagle shooting time...
Last month we had some pretty cold & windy days of -40 Celsius!!! On this day I look out my back window & see these tiny little birds all puffed-up like a cotton ball trying to stay warm in my Bridal Wreath Spirea Shrub, that the sun was barely kissing with its heat! They were almost three times their size! Adorable looking!
It's not officially winter yet and it wasn't actually that cold either. Still, it's been snowing all day and you can feel the coming chill in your bones. Perhaps this fellow did too - sitting so close to the fire - the only source of heat in a pioneer cabin on the grounds of a local museum.

Every now and then you have to get away from everyone and everything - even when it means pushing through snow squalls with wihiteout conditions, icy roads, and freezing temperatures to get there. There was no cell phone signal here and no interruptions. The only sounds were wind in the trees and the crunching of snow under snowshoes. Staying warm and feeling your breath with the effort brings it all back to basics.

Whether you celebrate it or not, I hope all my Flickr friends are able to cozy up in warmth, love, and happiness with their significant other on Valentines Day. The image itself was created on my iPhone last week while staying in a yurt. A wood stove and each other were the only source of warmth on a cold winter night.

In Toronto there an underground pathway (called the Path) that allows pedestrians to walk from Lake Ontario to the Eaton Centre 5 km away. The Path goes briefly above ground linking Saks/Hudson Bay to the Eaton Centre
We actually got snow again. This is 2 times in one season! In the 13 years I've lived here..that's never happened. So, I'll sit with my cup of tea...enjoy the beauty and hope that this doesn't all turn to ice :(

While they left the long pants at home, they happened to have a sleeping bag. That and the wind block that the nearby rockface was providing was just the ticket for them to stay warm up near the summit of Haleakala. They had come all the way from Bend, OR and had already visited Hana on the east side of the island, now it was time to watch the sunset from the top of the extinct volcano.

Ten years before I became a Chicago Police Officer myself, I was more interested in photography than in law enforcement. When news-worthy events would present themselves, I'd take my Canon FTBn 35mm camera and a few rolls of film to see what I could shoot.
Certainly the most news-worthy event in December of 1976, was the death and subsequent funeral of Mayor Richard J. Daley. Hizzoner's funeral mass would be in his beloved Bridgeport neighborhood, and it was to be a bitterly cold day.
It was kind of chaotic, frankly, certainly by today's standards. Most of the working press was holed up in various neighborhood taverns, but the photographers were out there taking pictures and freezing their asses off.
The coppers who were assigned to crowd control were freezing as well, and I managed to get this shot of these two officers, just trying to stay warm.
When I started posting pictures on Flickr back in 2009, I spent a lot of time digging through and scanning old negatives, including this particular scan, which I found hiding way back in my photostream.
I scanned the negative a second time, a few years later, but messed up and I ended up with a mirror-image of the picture you see here. In fact, I used the mirror-image version of this picture in the beginning of my Chicago Cop series, for part 3 of the chapter "Setting the State."
With the correct image, you can read the Sergeant's nametag, and I realized I had worked for this guy some 15 years later, when Lieutenant Lemmer briefly served as my Watch Commander in the 3rd District on the South Side.
He was just marking time at that point. I don't know who he pissed off so badly that he ended up in the 3rd District, but was clear that there wouldn't be any more promotions coming his way. So, he spent his time in the Watch Commander's office, reading technical manuals about machine guns. Must have been in the armed services in some capacity, and now that was what he lived for: machine guns, how they worked and how to put them together again after you'd taken them apart...
So, this is my time-capsule for today. Lt. Lemmer retired sometime during the early 1990s, and I don't know what became of him after that. I certainly hope that noting ever went horribly wrong with any of his beloved machine guns.
The other officer in the photo looks very familiar, but I cannot read the name-tag. However, if you're still out there somewhere, let me know who you are and I'll send you a nice print of this image.
