Today let us embrace the importance of statistical literacy and familiarize ourselves with the world of data. Unlock its potential, unravel its insights, and celebrate the power of numbers. Understanding and interpreting data not only enhances our analytical skills but also empowers us to make informed decisions.

Fear of losing your job and terror at the prospect of never finding one can't be separated from a ridiculous statistic that could only seem normal in a world gone mad: over the past thirty years, formal working hours.. have gone up in the United States, Canada, and Japan and diminished only slightly in a few European countries
In the United States, frequent polls indicate that work, far more than divorce or the fear of death, is the principal source of stress, and in Japan, karoshi, overwork, kills 10,000 people a year. ..Fear of unemployment allows a mockery to be made of labor rights. The eight-hour day no longer belongs to the realm of law but to literature, where it shines among other works of surrealist poetry. And such things as employer contributions to pensions, medical benefits, workers' compensation, vacation pay, Christmas bonuses, and dependents' allowances are relics that belong in an archaeological museum
the hunt for cheap labor no longer requires armies as it did during colonial times. That's all taken care of by the misery that most of the planet suffers. What we have is the end of geography: capital crosses borders at the speed of light, thanks to new communication and transportation technologies that make time and distance disappear. And when an economy anywhere on the planet catches a cold, economies around the world sneeze. .
-Eduardo Galeano, The World Gone Mad JNU students are well aware that the workers in Maruti Suzukis Manesar plant have been fighting a protracted battle against the Maruti management for their basic rights: the legal right to organise and form a union, the right to decent working conditions, and compliance to provisions of Contract Labour Act, for instance. In this famed poster-city of successful neo-liberal development, how did the Maruti management as well as the entire Haryana state machinery respond to these perfectly legitimate demands, and to a long-drawn, peaceful, organised and united movement? Throughout the protracted movement, workers have been threatened for demanding their rights and the management has repeatedly refused to respect the agreement it signed with the workers. And recently, after an incident of blatant caste discrimination, the management refused to take any action on the supervisor concerned, and instead suspended the abused worker who had complained! Not just this, they refused to re-instate him despite repeated protests. Then, the management brought in hired goons who brutally beat up the workers and union leaders, and indulged in violence in the factory premises. Following these incidents, the Maruti management illegally announced a lockout of the Manesar plant. Not just this, a virtual witch-hunt of the workers began, and the entire state machinery of the Haryana government leapt to the service of the Maruti management. Hundreds of workers were tracked down, illegally arrested and charged with dubiously manufactured crimes. They continue to remain in jails, facing torture and brutal repression on a daily basis. And now, the Maruti management has announced that the plant will be restarted from 21st August 2012, by terminating 500 permanent employees This is completely illegal, and a blatant violation of workers rights, while of course being an open attack on workers unity. .

exploitative economy, threw their weight with the Maruti management against the protesting workers! .
Manesar, meant to take India's shiny new liberalisation dream forward, had begun to split wide open; its workforce pushed beyond the brink an industrial town hollowed out from within..
Maruti workers experiences are by no means an exception. Throughout the industrial belt surrounding Delhi (in Gurgaon, Noida, Okhla, Bawana,Wazirpur for instance) and of course in other industrial belts across the country, such blatant violations of workers rights happen on a routine basis, aided and abetted by a compliant state apparatus. The advocates of neo-liberalism never tire of talking of the progress and development in places like Gurgaon the much-touted epitomes of success of the neo-liberal project. And yet, time and again, these so-called success stories receive severe jolts, when workers remind us of systemic exploitation, long working hours, oppressive working condition, and the denial of the simple right to form a union. .
The JNU student community has always offered its support to workers struggles for their rights. Extending solidarity and protest against the corporate-government nexus scuttling workers rights, JNUSU is organizing a public meeting tonight (18th August 2012) from 9.30 pm at Kaveri mess, which will be addressed by Rajendra Pathak (the lawyer who represented the Honda workers and the Maruti workers) and noted labour historian Prabhu Mahapatra, from DU. .

Before Canadians surrender anymore of their freedoms to COVID-19 propaganda, can we stop and ask some critical questions? “COVID is unquestionably much worse than a bad flu season,” says Dr. Allison McGeer, an infectious disease specialist at Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital, in an interview with the CBC. McGeer cites government statistics (as of June 17) […]
