An interesting statement emerging from yesterday’s HM Government pandemic press conference is that funding will continue to be allocated to reversing some of the 1960s Beeching railway closures. Mention of two routes provoked my immediate attention, both being on the Isle of Wight. At the time of Beeching, the once 55 mile route network had been reduced to just Ryde to Ventnor; and Ryde – Newport – Cowes. Beeching proposed withdrawing this remainder, but in the event, the Ryde – Ventnor route was retained as far south as Shanklin. In 1967, this truncated line was electrified, incredibly utilising redundant London Underground Northern Line tube stock, dating from 1923, replaced in 1992 by further redundant tube stock dating from 1938! During 2020, it is proposed to replace these with London Underground “D” stock sub-surface trains, built around 1980, thus maintaining the tradition that only trains tried and tested for over 40 years are eligible for service on the Isle of Wight! Yesterday's announcement seemed to promote the notion of restoring the Shanklin – Ventnor section, plus running Network Rail services between Ryde and Newport, apparently in conjunction with the Isle of Wight Steam Railway heritage service between Smallbrook Junction and Wooton Bridge!
In the hope that public transport will regain its role as mass passenger carriers once the Covid-19 virus is put in its place, and we can all enjoy seaside holidays again, here are some photos of happy times enjoying travel on that glorious island, where ancient trains trundle, buses tackle incredible gradients, and ice cream and cream teas abound. Starting this sequence is a “happy family” shot on the upper deck of open-topper Bristol VRT /ECW Southern Vectis fleet no. 506, on route 44 Sandown Zoo – Shanklin Esplanade, climbing Sandown High Street in August 1991.

Accompanied by an unsigned, handstamped Official UN Press Photograph dated November 21, 1966. The photo documents the Security Council’s 1325th meeting regarding a Jordanian complaint of Israeli aggression following the Samu Incident. The typed information on the back notes the Council heard from Jordan, Uruguay, and Israel, while Ambassador Goldberg (US) spoke under the right of reply. This meeting led directly to Resolution 228, censuring the military action.

Historical Significance: The Samu Incident:
The meeting was convened at the urgent request of Jordan following the Samu Incident (Operation Shredder) on November 13, 1966. This was the largest Israeli military operation since the 1956 Suez Crisis, involving a cross-border assault on the West Bank village of Samu.
The Meeting: As noted on the back of the UN photo, the Council heard statements from Jordan, Uruguay, and Israel.
The US Role: Represented by Arthur Goldberg, the US exercised its "right of reply" and was instrumental in the subsequent Resolution 228, which was adopted just days later on November 25 to censure Israel for the military action.
The Outcome: This period is considered a primary contributing factor to the outbreak of the Six-Day War in 1967.
The Architects of 1960s Diplomacy: U Thant and Arthur Goldberg:
This archive brings together two of the most influential peacemakers of the Cold War era. U Thant (1909–1974), the third Secretary-General of the United Nations, was a soft-spoken but firm diplomat from Burma who famously mediated the Cuban Missile Crisis and worked tirelessly to find a negotiated end to the Vietnam War. Serving alongside him during the critical mid-1960s was Arthur Goldberg (1908–1990), a rare American statesman who resigned a lifetime appointment as a U.S. Supreme Court Justice to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to the UN at the height of global tension. Their partnership was essential in navigating the "crises of 1966," ranging from the leadership stability of the UN Secretariat to the volatile border conflicts between Jordan and Israel. Together, they represented the pinnacle of international cooperation during one of the 20th century's most dangerous decades.

Artist Statement:
This series of images explores the identity of the two women it features. The images are intended to challenge the viewers’ perception of the women by portraying them in an obscure, indirect manner. Although it is deliberately made obvious that both figures are women, their features are not distinct, adding to the mystery of them both and increasing the uncertainty of the viewer.
In each of the images the figures are not photographed directly, but as reflections on distressed surfaces, distorting their images and signifying how the way in which other people perceive these women is so different from their true identity. The constant presence of the red veil is a symbol of their strength and authority.
The decision to take the photographs in this specific location was made after discussion with the two women, who identified this as a place with which they have a considerable history, a place of calm and peace, surrounded by nature and where they feel they can expose their true selves.
In one of the images the photographer can be viewed, concealed between the women and the trees. She is barely noticeable when first viewed, yet is uncovered when the image is explored in greater depth. She seems to be behind the ever-present red veil, as if it is a protective barrier, reflecting the relationship between the two women and myself, the photographer.
Through this series of work I have been able to explore my relationship to these women visually in a way, which I have never been able to articulate through words. I have been able to explain to myself and demonstrate to them the respect that I hold for them and to show how I value their strength and dignity.

This is a film detail shot of the room full of computers at abandoned Six Flags Hurricane Harbor in New Orleans. When I look at it, I imagine how the mission statement posted on the wall must have taken on a strange meaning with the high water mark sitting just below it. Floating above Lake Six Flags. Some people boated through the ruins. I imagine them reading "To deliver Family Fun and Fond Memories for all of Our Guests" just hovering on the water. A surreal hope, but their mission was successful with me. I will never forget the intensity I felt wandering the ruins.
My credit card statement consists of two sheets of paper, one I keep with the amount spent each month, this sheet is surplus to my requirements so I shred it.
As you see I used it for a few sums :)
Now that it's officially Spring, we can at least start thinking about umbrellas instead of parkas - despite a "special weather statement," which suggests very wintry weather for the next couple of days.

This photo was taken by a Kowa/SIX medium format film camera and a KOWA 1:3.5/55mm lens with a Kowa L1A ø67 filter using Kodak Portra 160 film, the negative scanned by an Epson Perfection V600 and digitally rendered with Photoshop.
If you do not know your way around Barcelona then you can easily get lost in the city. Especially in the Gothic quarter just off of Las Ramblas. My first time in Barcelona was with a friend who spoke very brief Spanish. When I say brief I mean that he spoke Italian but tried to make do. We got lost but using his “knowledge” we found out way back. After this moment I have been here many times and found my way easily. I wanted to visit this bridge to take photos from the first time I saw it. The street underneath is always packed with tourists so I opted for a tight angle, trying to bring more attention to the gothic walkway.
On South Beach in Miami I encountered these two ladies wearing what appeared to be giant curlers on their heads......perhaps they were trying to make some kind of fashion statement. They certainly attracted everyone's attention.

Sandi Whetzel is seduced by the captivating, graceful forms she finds tucked away in nature. Her fascination with the discovered shapes compels her to enhance their graceful contours, infuse them with luscious color and feature them prominently in her paintings. Whetzel’s contemporary acrylic paintings embrace the nuances of shapes and patterns inspired by the plant world. Her current focus has been an intimate view of succulents; embellishing their engaging shapes with vibrant hues and sculptural textures.
Sandi paints in her home studio located at Days Creek, OR. Since 1997 she has instructed community education art classes for Umpqua Community College. She has studied with accomplished artists, Kevin Macpherson, Tom Browning and Harley Brown. She treasures most the continuing association with her mentor artist and friend, Bonnie Hill of Roseburg, OR.
Several of Whetzel’s works have been used to promote the wine industry through wine-themed events in southern Oregon. Her work appears in Northwest Artists: A Collection of Works by Notable Artists of the Northwest. Her paintings are in private collections in Oregon, Washington, California, Colorado and Arizona. She has exhibited in solo and numerous group shows during the last several years, including two shows at the Coos Art Museum, in Coos Bay, OR.
During her childhood, Sandi’s family changed residence frequently to follow employment in the logging industry of southern Oregon and northern California. She attended many small elementary and high schools, none of which offered any art education. As a teenager she enjoyed paint-by-number oil sets and she became interested in drawing briefly around the age of thirteen. After that, Sandi didn’t have much contact with art until later in life.
For years after she married, her only artistic pursuits had been machine sewing garments and home decorator items. When a friend invited her to a fashion T-shirt painting class she thoroughly enjoyed doing that. At the same time, Whetzel seemed to be mesmerized by PBS TV painting shows.
Near Whetzel’s fortieth birthday she purchased new home furniture and wanted some tropical paintings to go with the new furnishings. Sandi had grown up with a motto that had served her well whenever something had been a bit beyond her reach. It was, “…Necessity is the mother of invention.” She always derived a certain satisfaction with inventing her version of the desired object. She thought, “How hard could it be to do the paintings myself? After all, I have been painting T-shirts and watching the instructional videos on TV.” Sandi immediately started painting all on her own, making discoveries through trial and error. During that time frame, she also ran a child day care business at home. While the three toddlers took their midday nap, Sandi took out her paints and painted for an hour or so during the weekdays. Eventually she took art instruction from a very talented and devoted community college art instructor, Bonnie Hill of Roseburg, OR. In 1997 after only a few years of instruction, Bonnie recommended Sandi to replace herself as instructor of the classes. Bonnie became Sandi’s close friend and mentor; a treasured source of inspiration and knowledge. Whetzel has been painting and instructing art ever since.
When speaking of her art, Sandi has remarked, “I hope my art warms the spirit and inspires people to pursue their dreams. Art that does that for us helps to make our working and living environments more of a sanctuary in stressful times.”
One the first things I noticed on the street Barcelona were the flags draped from many balconies. A quick Wikipedia search taught me that these flags are the Estelada, the flag of Catalonian independence.
There are two versions here, the nationalist flag with the blue triangle and white star and the socialist flag with the red star. The hardest thing about getting a balcony panorama are the lovely trees that line the streets.
