Thank you for your visit comments and fav's, it's really appreciated. :-)
The California poppy flower became the state flower in 1903. I have so many childhood memories of seeing the flowers all over the hillsides. One year I planted numerous seeds and only one flower emerged. I suppose some things grow better in their natural environment. Here's to more attempts to fill my garden with these brilliant bursts of orange petals.
In springtime beautiful bluebonnets, the state flower of Texas, can often be found along the main and back roads of Texas Hill Country. Although Bluebonnet season usually begins in March and ends in May, some blooms were already being spotted in Hill County at the end of January this year. This photograph was taken along the
Willow City Loop, a 13 mile-long private ranch road north of Fredericksburg.

The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual plant in the family Asteraceae, with a large flower head (capitulum). The stem of the flower can grow up to 3 metres tall, with a flower head that can be 30 cm wide. Other types of sunflowers include the California Royal Sunflower, which has a burgundy (red + purple) flower head.
The flower head is actually an inflorescence made of hundreds or thousands of tiny flowers called florets. The central florets look like the centre of a normal flower, and the outer florets look like yellow petals. All together they make up a "false flower" or pseudanthium. The benefit to the plant is that it is very easily seen by the insects and birds which pollinate it, and it produces thousands of seeds.
The sunflower is the state flower of Kansas. That is why Kansas is sometimes called the Sunflower State. To grow well, sunflowers need full sun.
We had a twelve hour rainfall yesterday and it was followed by another couple of hours of light misty rain that left everything outside utterly drenched - including this yellow Hibiscus, which stood out boldly even under heavy grey skies. Apparently, the flower is native to Hawaii and is the state flower. It's also listed as endangered in the US, which seems a bit strange as my wife picked this one up from Home Depot.

California Indians cherished the poppy as both a source of food and for oil extracted from the plant. Its botanical name, Eschsholtzia californica, was given by Adelbert Von Chamisso, a naturalist and member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences, who dropped anchor in San Francisco in 1816 in a bay surrounded by hills of the golden flowers. Also sometimes known as the flame flower, la amapola, and copa de oro (cup of gold), the poppy grows wild throughout California. It became the state flower in 1903. Every year April 6 is California Poppy Day, and Governor Wilson proclaimed May 13-18, 1996, Poppy Week.
Magnolia is named after the flowering plant of the genus Magnolia. There are over 200 plant species in the subclass 'Magnoliodeae' of the family 'Magnoliaceae'. The genus is named after the French botanist Pierre Magnol(1638-1715). Magnolia is the state flower of both Mississippi and Louisiana and is also the state tree of Mississippi.
The 'Saucer Magnolia' is a large shrub in the magnolia family and makes a great specimen or lawn tree planted in a park. This one was seen and photographed in the Japanese Garden at Central Park, San Mateo, California.
This poppy caught my eye as I explored down a little country road off another country road in southern Monterey County. I loved the quiet, the colors and then the repeated arch patterns in this fence leading to open pastures. It may not be a spectacular photo but it represents a great little getaway following work and between winter storms.
One of the beautiful Dogwood trees at Robinwood Lake, taken in the late afternoon at golden time. The Dogwood Flower is the State Flower of NC and it's a spectacle this time of year. Happy fenced Friday. ^_^

In 1903, the California or golden poppy (Eschscholzia californica) became the official state flower of California. It is native to California & other Western USA States (Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, & New Mexico) as well as parts of Mexico (Sonora & northwest Baja California).
Its cup-shaped flowers are in brilliant shades of orange and yellow. Among cultivars, the spectrum of petal hues is wide & includes white, pink, red, and magenta.
