John C. Calhoun. The front hall of the Main Lobby is dominated by a life-size statue of John C. Calhoun, considered to be one of South Carolina’s greatest statesmen. He served nationally as Secretary of State, Secretary of War, United States Congressman, and United States Senator. He was Vice-President of the United States under presidents John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. It is likely that John C. Calhoun would have been elected President of the United States had he not made many enemies by supporting nullification, the theory that the individual states can override laws passed by the United States government. His theories on nullification led to the state’s rights movement, which eventually led to secession and civil war. 131

The Kansas State Capitol is the state capital building of the U.S. state of Kansas. Housing the Kansas Legislature, it is located in the state capital of Topeka. The building was constructed in stages, the east wing 1866–1873, the west wing 1879–1881, and the center 1884–1906. The building is currently undergoing extensive renovations, including reclaiming numerous frescoes .
A large mural in the east wing, painted by Kansan John Steuart Curry, centers on an image of abolitionist John Brown. This is believed to be the only instance of a person convicted of treason being featured in a state capitol.

Interesting fact about my state capitol building:
California’s capitol building was modeled after the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C. While many other capitol buildings in the nation are similarly designed, Sacramento’s is unique in that it doesn’t have a statue crowning its dome. Instead, it’s ornamented with a gold-plated copper ball that’s reminiscent of California’s Gold Rush history. The building’s majestic dome rises high into the sky of Sacramento, while inside, a smaller dome allows visitors to get a closer look at the Victorian details.

Custer’s Last Battle
F. Pedretti’s Sons, oil on canvas, 1902, 168" x 204"
Strategically placed opposite The Louisiana Purchase hangs Custer’s Last Battle, which commemorates the death of George Armstrong Custer and the other army casualties at the Battle of Little Bighorn (Battle of the Greasy Grass) in eastern Montana on June 25, 1876. In order to better fit the setting, Pedretti artists reduced the battle scene to a stark confrontation between Custer and an unidentified Lakota warrior.
F. Pedretti’s Sons, oil on canvas, 1902, 168" x 204"
This prominently placed, apocryphal mural honors the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, which made American settlement of the West possible. Depicted are the two heads of state, French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and U.S. President Thomas Jefferson (who never actually met), the Marquis de Barbé-Marbois (lead negotiator for the French), Robert Livingston (lead delegate for the United States), and future president James Monroe, who conducted the negotiations. Behind the men is an image of the Sphinx and Egyptian pyramids—possibly an allusion to Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign, but more likely a reference to Masonic imagery

The current building is the sixth to serve as the capitol building since Illinois was admitted to the United States in 1818. Built in the architectural styles of the French Renaissance and Italianate, it was designed by Cochrane and Garnsey, an architecture and design firm based in Chicago. Ground was broken for the new capitol on March 11, 1868, and the building was completed twenty years later for a total cost of $4.5 million.
