So we're out hiking with the dogs and we come around a bend in the mountain and there is something orange on the hillside in the distance, through the trees. It's near sunset and it looks almost like fire. Steph says, "are those poppies?" and I say, "no way. That's too orange. It looks like safety vest orange... like CalTrans orange."

We keep walking and after a while I raise my 70-300 to my eye, take a picture, and zoom in on the camera's LCD. By then it was pretty clear we were looking at poppies... a firey mountain of California Golden poppies...acres upon acres of them. I took this shot when we finally got even with them, as the sun was just about spent.

It's said that California is called the Golden State not because of the gold rush, but because these poppies, the state flower, used to cover most of the entire state in golden creamy goodness every spring. Ships at sea used to admire them growing on the flanks of the San Gabriel mountains, 25 miles inland. There are fewer of them now and a lot more sprawl, but maybe that makes seeing fields of them even more of a treat.

The Massachusetts State House, also known as the Massachusetts Statehouse or the New State House, is the state capitol and seat of government for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, located in the Beacon Hill[3][4] neighborhood of Boston. The building houses the Massachusetts General Court (state legislature) and the offices of the Governor of Massachusetts. The building, designed by architect Charles Bulfinch, was completed in January 1798 at a cost of $133,333 (more than five times the budget), and has repeatedly been enlarged since. It is one of the oldest state capitols in current use. It is considered a masterpiece of Federal architecture and among Bulfinch's finest works, and was designated a National Historic Landmark for its architectural significance.

Pescadero State Beach means "the place to fish" in Spanish. So much of California is Spanished influenced.

It's amazing what at 500mm with a 1.4x converter on it can do to a background ... that is if you can hold that bazooka still! This is from Thanksgiving on the river at South Llano River State Park.

The US State of Washington is under a state of emergency following days of severe wind and rain leading to extensive flooding in parts of the state. The extreme weather was caused by an atmospheric river, a huge plume of moisture extending over the Pacific and into Washington. Different satellites in orbit carry different instruments that can provide us with a wealth of complementary information to understand and to respond to flooding disasters.

The first image captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission shows the extent of the floods in the Nooksack River, which spilled over its banks this week and washed out several roads in the process. The flooding forced the evacuation of hundreds of residents and lead to the closure of schools.

More than 158 000 people were affected by power outages and disruptions to other services. The conditions triggered mudslides in the region, prompting the closure of the Interstate 5, but it has since reopened.

Optical satellite instruments such as the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites cannot see through clouds, which is why radar missions like Sentinel-1 are particularly useful. Radar images acquired before and after flooding events offer immediate information on the extent of inundation, thanks to Sentinel-1’s ability to ‘see’ through clouds and rain.

This radar image uses information from two separate acquisitions captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission on 4 November and 16 November 2021 and shows the extent of the flooding of the Nooksack River in dark blue.

The Copernicus Sentinels are a fleet of dedicated EU-owned satellites, designed to deliver the wealth of data and imagery that are central to the European Union's Copernicus environmental programme.

believe it or not, this sheet was completely wet. i was hoping for it to look more transparent and stick to the skin, but i suppose it needed to be more wet and stretched etc..

despite what i said about thoroughly planning my photos, this wasn't as planned out as i would have hoped. i am still quite pleased by the result i got from a fairly spontaneous shoot, though :)
