You know just what to say, things that scare me

I should just walk away, but I can't move my feet

The more that I know you, the more that I want to

Something inside me's changed

I was so much younger yesterday,

I didn't know that I was starving till I tasted you

Don't need no butterflies when you give me the whole damn zoo.

By the way, right away, you do things to my body

I didn't know that I was starving till I tasted you

By the way, right away, you do things to my body

I didn't know that I was starving till I tasted you

You know just how to make my heart beat faster

Emotional earthquake, bring on disaster

You hit me head on, got me weak in my knees

Yeah, something inside me's changed

I was so much younger yesterday

So much younger yesterday.

Palestinian families face an impossible choice: risk death for food or slowly starve."

I've been grappling with creativity lately. It used to come so easy. I seldom really thought about the process. It just happened. Often it was fueled simply by reacting to impulsive instinct. In that sense it wasn't so much about getting into a creative frame of mind so much as getting into an activity that was likely to yield creative results. Much like priming a pump. Once started, it required no further input. In the first weeks of the quarantine all of that went out the window. I was preoccupied for one, and creative pursuits seemed a low priority in the larger scheme of things. Also opportunities were limited and at first I was hesitant to even bring the camera out of the house. Everything just felt different. I took to shooting furtively, and even trying to conceal the fact that I was carrying a camera. I've since relaxed quite a bit. There's still tension but not nearly as extreme as it was. Opportunities are still limited, but often the biggest limitation is the mind. My impulsiveness has returned. I'm more apt now to act in the moment. I thought the societal shutdown might actually be a good time to explore situations that I might otherwise have shunned. Such was the case the other day when I encountered this figurine. The classic Virgin Mary funerary statue. I passed a small cemetery on my way home for the millionth time and suddenly veered around and drove back to check it out. I had seen several Virgin Mary figurines from the road and one seemed to beckon me in. However up close it seemed dull and rather featureless. But a couple of rows over I noticed this figurine standing in a puddle or rain water. It was as if her gown was drenched from the puddle but she was undaunted. Sometimes these figurines look utterly plastic and unrealistic while others are imbued with lifelike character and emotion. This one was as expressive as any I've seen. The effect was striking and highlighted by the low sun angle and ominous clouds. I was at first annoyed by the sun glare, but ultimately realized that it was transforming the scene.

An oldie from years ago. The light was low. I kept tossing out small pieces of a granola bar (yeah, I know) and that racoon kept getting closer and closer. A memorable experience.

Can’t you tell?

Aggstein castle in Lower Austria is situated 300 metres above the right bank of the river Danube and was built at the beginning of the 12th century. When Georg Scheck vom Wald became lord of the castle in 1429 he was said to put his prisoners on the rock spur to the right of the chapel. He then bricked the window up and the captives could either jump (300 meters) or starve to death. His cruelty didn't do him any good though as he finally went mad.

It is said that two prisoners survived by jumping into a nearby treetop.

My herald has betrayed me! I'm starving!

I foolishly entered the 2021 Bio-Cup, and somehow managed to pass the preliminaries, which meant I had to build something related to Comics for my Round One Subtheme.

I'm not completely oblivious to comics, I follow a few YouTube channels that focus on them, but I don't read them. I stressed for four days trying to figure out something I could enter, and then it hit me, I may have just enough parts to make an emaciated Galactus. Less than one day later, this is the result, and it's about as good as it's going to get because my purple parts are depleted.

I chucked a few extra photos over on Imgur for the judges and anyone who cares.

Temperatures finally hit mid 30s after some bitter cold weather. On the right is Starved Rock State Park and on the left is Plum Island. On the other side of Plum Island is the lock for barges and boat traffic.

Gus came to us starving and mangy scrawny. We fed him outside the cat fence for a while, but then, of course, we invited him in. His full name is Asparagus, but Gus does just fine when we call him! He is a treasured member of "the People," and we ARE so glad he came to our house this year!

(I hope that a collage is allowable this week for the challenge, as I really wanted to show how pitiful and sad Gus was when he came to the house back in June/2024.)

The Teleidoscope: Starvation

Starved of warmth.

After a quick search through the dictionary I found that there is an alternate definition of the word "Starve". While it largely applies to one suffering from lack of nutrients, it can also mean "to suffer or die from cold". I really wanted to try something different for this theme, to step away from the obvious images of food (or lack thereof). I felt that this definition would go quite perfectly with the amazing amount of snow that has appeared in the last few days.

To say I was cold during this is an understatement, what you don't see is that I'm not wearing a shirt underneath the blanket and after standing knee deep in snow for 30 minutes without a shirt on, I was most certainly about to starve.

Last weekend I went into the canyon under Iceland highest waterfall, Glymur. The waterfall is 200m high and the canyon a little deeper. The inner most 1km is quiet narrow and one needs to wade through water to get there. It is best to hike there after long dry spells. This is the third time I have been there in summer. It is a interesting place and quite an enjoyable adventure walk.

This time was different though. The Northern Fulmar nest in their thousands on the canyon walls. In late August the youngs of leave their nests. They jump out of their nest on their maiden flight to test their flying skills. Those who successful fly land on the nearby sea where they feed. Those who fail end up in the bottom of the canyon, where they have no chance of ever getting to the sea. They are doomed.

Hiking into the canyon we had navigate past tens of these failures in the fight for "survival of the fittest". Some where alive, many where dead having slowly starved to death. Others had died quickly as a fox or a mink meal.

After we stayed in the narrow canyon for about an hour we started hiking back as it was getting dark. Fog had also rolled in so we could only barely see the top of the walls in the thick mist. It had become a spooky place to be in. As we slowly made our way back in the water a dead bird came floating by. A few more where also stuck between rocks. In the dark, fog and with death all around this place quickly changed from spooky to plain scary. An hour later we where at the car, soaking wet from both the river and the rain.
