I started off trying to create a "high key" photo (like this one, for example), but in the process learned that Photoshop Elements doesn't have the features needed in the tutorial linked to below to do this—it doesn't do channels proper. I'd found an online tutorial on how to convert a color photograph (which is what this started off as) into a "high key" image. Since I couldn't follow the tutorial precisely, I took the general concepts and applied them as best I could with the tools I had. In the original photo, my brown eyes—which I sometimes jokingly call "shit coloured" :P LOL—were so dark that when I was done with the processing, they came out far more intense than I anticipated. The result you see above (meaning the result of the eyes) was not intentional, but I kinda like it (it's almost as if I've given myself blue eyes, but in black-and-white), so here it is. Whether it is good or bad, I've no bloody idea. I'm not sure that this would actually qualify as a "legitimate" high key image, though—but I could be wrong.
Steps taken to get this image:
1) Set the exposure level adjustment in my camera to 1-1/3 stops over-exposure. (The light source adjustment I keep set at Tungsten, because otherwise the halogen and flourescent lights in my office give every photo a garish orange cast, which you can see in the first photo posted in my 365days set.)
2) Turned on the camera's bracketing feature, with the bracketing shots set for 1-1/3 stops over- and under-exposed from the initial setting (based on the tutorial I was basing this on, you could probably go as much as 2 stops over and under). Despite the deliberate over-exposure, every shot had rather long shutter speeds which resulted in a lot of blurred images, even with my camera on its tripod. It meant taking a lot of bracketed photos and doing my damnedest to stand as still as possible. Invariably, the best photos were those that were at the 1-1/3 under-exposed setting, as those had the faster shutter-speeds. (I've been using the bracketing feature, with different settings, an awful lot lately to get as many photos as possible at different exposure settings with as few snaps of the shutter. Then I simply pick the photo that looks the best.)
3) Took a colour photograph with two light sources: a low wattage halogen light above and to the camera's right (which is why there's some overexposure between the eye and the ear) and a flourescent lamp to the camera's left—not the best sources of light for a photograph, but I work with what I've got on hand. Both lights were quite close to me. This was done to try to create a high key image right out of the camera.
4) In Photoshop Elements, choose Filter > Adjustments > Photo Filter... .
5) Choose the Red filter and change the Density to 100%.
6) Choose Enhance > Adjust Color > Remove Color. All the steps up to this point—except for the lighting—were done to mimic how an image of this sort is done, according to the tutorial linked to above, using black-and-white film (a red filter, with up to two stops of over-exposure).
7) Choose Enhance > Adjust Lighting > Shadows/Highlights..., then adjust the percentage for Lighten Shadows to your liking. For this photo, I believe I set it at 75%.
8) Choose Enhance > Adjust Lighting > Brightness/Contrast..., then increase the brightness to a level of your choosing. I don't recall the setting I used. I made no adjustments to the contrast for this image, but if I were to do so for any image I'd lower it.
9) Choose Enhance > Adjust Lighting > Levels... . Here you are given two slider bars to adjust. This is where I did most of my experimenting. Very little adjustment, if any at all, should probably be made with the white adjusters on the right. These will darken the image, which is the opposite of what you want with a high key image. The upper slider, which is called "Input Levels", has three level adjustments. The middle adjuster, which is for midtones, I took almost all the way to the left. This is the level that created the intensity in my eyes—it removed all the darkness from the original image. Moving the black adjustment (the black slider on the left) for either the Input or Output Levels will lighten the image. Adjust either to your liking. I found that here the Output Level adjustment created more of the effect I was after.
(I'm glad I took notes of the basic steps I followed. I think I might try some more high key shots, with different variations on the theme.)
Have fun!

Begin by developing sketches that focus on composition rather than tiny details. Details can always be added in later - I like to leave some decision-making for the actual drawing itself. Reference photos are appropriate, since this is a self portrait - but avoid being totally influenced by the photography...it's important that you, as the artist, make artistic decisions as you develop your artwork.
