Well then! When the Park screws up your campsite reservation, you wind up where you really didn't want to be in the first place, and the weather gods are being fickle, it's not an auspicious start to a trip far from home. I shot this image the day after we arrived and just before the rain started in earnest (I added just a little drama to reflect my mood of the day). We had to pack up again in rain under a big tarp the next morning but after that, the weather gods took pity on us, the sun came out, and we slept under a very chilly clear sky on heated mattresses. Did I mention that having access to electricity while camping is awesome?

RJ Corman RJ01 starts its power up at the yard office at Fuquay-Varina. With clouds and rain in the forecast for most of the day, I took this opportunity to grab a well-lit shot of the B39-8 before it took off to Raleigh under cloudier skies a short while later.

Macro Mondays: "Button"

The Start/Stop button in my BMW. It tucked away behind the steering wheel, so this is the best angle I could get.

Wet morning macro shooting.

From October 20 until 26 I managed to sneak out for a couple of days for some good old railfanning action. Weather forecasts were demotivating, but I decided to try to make the most of it. Letting the weather forecast determine my next destination seemed worth a try. Heading to the unknown was good motivation to eventually head off, after dropping the kids at school. An opening between the clouds would be moving east throughout the day and I decided to follow it, looking for opportunities. Number one was only half an hour from home, as BLS Cargo Nord was heading towards Antwerp withtheir daily Zeebrugge-Antwerp shuttle. On Monday 20/8 it was lead by 475 417. Sun and autumn colors didn't disappoint.

Lovely start to the morning up at hope. Peak district.

This most clever Halloween display was seen in my daughter's San Diego neighborhood and uploaded for Smile on Saturday! :-). theme: free theme. Hope this makes you smile as much as it did me when I saw it! HSoS everyone!

Since I can't access my old account, here it is, I made a new one.

Another shot from my trip up to Start Point Lighthouse at the weekend.

Start small - these are the 'Small Isles' after all - and work up. Small perhaps and a bit 'out the way' (the Outer Hebrides) but very beautiful. They are a group of islands to the south of Skye in Scotland and provide a richness of delights to satisfy the largest of appetites!

I used a long exposure here to help bring out the cloud textures and movement in the water

Yesterday afternoon myself and my friend Carl drove up to Start Point Lighthouse near Kingsbridge in Devon. We were hoping for a decent sunset and it was looking pretty good when we got there. The lighthouse points east so normally people come here for sunrise shots. We had a lovely bit of side light from the afternoon sun which gave of a nice contrast with the shadows on the lower part of the coastline. This shot was taken at about 15:30 just after we arrived. I took quite a few photos here so I'll try not to spam you with too many of them!

Meh, yet another Great Egret, Ardea alba, in flight against an overcast sky, no better than several I have already posted. However, it’s very encouraging as a proof of concept, because I got it with my brand new Fujifilm X-T5 on my first outing.

Manual exposure; one frame from a 7fps burst; following the subject at 300mm; continuous back button autofocus set for bird tracking; saved as RAW and HEIF on UHS-II cards; uploaded to the Cloud with my old SD card adapter, processed from HEIF in Photos on iPad; cropped from 40MP to 3, for a 6000mm full-frame equivalent reach.

Several questions remain to be answered, haven’t got a slick workflow. Had to sit on a park bench for a while and search the manual on my phone to figure out how to invoke burst mode. 😜
