As with other Soviet-era rangefinders, the shutter speed selector rotates when the shutter is released, and should not be changed until after the shutter has been cocked. If you change the shutter speed without cocking the shutter first, the setting pin can be broken when you advance the film and cock the shutter.
The Start is a very well made and interesting system SLR camera, and entirely mechanical. It was aimed at the professional market. At its era there is no other system camera in the Soviet Union.
It was often referred to as the "Russian Exakta". At that time Start was the only competition to the Exakta available within the Soviet Union and the Soviet-dominated part of Europe. It was at least in principle, the only other system camera, providing not only interchangeable lenses, but also finders and viewing screens.
Helios-44 58 mm f/2 is similar to the Zeiss Biotar. But unfortunately this is the Start system's only manufactured lens. There is an adapter for M39 screw mount Zenith lenses, but this was not an attractive option, as such lenses did not have automatic aperture system.

i started out the day a little different but found these shoes and belt at work :)
dress, belt, boots: all vintage (though the boots are probably 90's so maybe not quite 'vintage')
Found myself in Devon one morning last month and hauled out of bed early enough to take advantage of a reasonable sunrise. Good job, really, the day went considerably downhill from there.

Start of the SCCA Enduro race at VIR on Saturday as seen from my Datsun 280z. My co-driver got to see the accident onto the left, note the black skid marks under the #16 to the left. We didn't get to finish the race as a stub axle broke.

Did you ever read one of those small tabloids that they leave on the tables in coffee shops for you to read while having your morning java. Well it just so happened I did and I came across this little Tid-Bit and of course, it got me to thinking once again.
A small boy looked up at his mommy and asked, Mama, do you know why God made us? Knowing that her son had his own explanation, she asked him, Do you know why? The little boy smiled and said, Oh that's easy! Because the people in the Bible were so bad, He wanted to start over.
When you think about it, it's easy to see how this little boy could come up with such a conclusion. When he listens to the Bible stories in Sunday school, he probably hears about Adam and Eve, who messed things up for all of us. He probably hears too, about Jonah, who wouldn't obey God and was swallowed up by a big fish. And then there is Judas, who betrayed Jesus for money and I'm sure there are many other stories as well.
The Bible is painfully realistic and definitely it is not a white-washed version of the history of God's people. In it's honest presentation of its characters, the Bible proves that we all need to be forgiven of our sins. The bad people of the Bible remind us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).
But there is good news in all of this, God did provide a way to start over. He sent Jesus, who died so that we could become new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17).
If anything is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. -- 2 Corinthians 5:17.
The Savior is waiting to save you,
And cleanse every sin-stain away;
By faith you can know full forgiveness
And be a new creation today! --Bosch
