Three Inios riders here but one has been mimicked out I had all three heads in sight but then arrrh! The fun with cycling is you only get one or two shots on rapid fire to get what is hopefully the shot as you move between the cyclists when they are moving this fast.

Tour of Britain........ Stage 7. A small group of riders who broke away at the start of Stage 7 which contained the eventual stage winner, Ian Stannard the Team Sky rider. E-M1 MKII/40-150mm.

We started at Marple Station - Peak Forest canal

Almost perfect timing for Christmas - as it is Christmas Day somewhere as I post this.

"I saw three ships come sailing in

On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;

I saw three ships come sailing in

On Christmas Day in the morning."

More information at oldknows.com/marple-aqueduct.html

From the information sign....the aqueduct was designed by Benjamin Outram, construction was supervised by local engineer Thomas Brown.

The circular openings reduce the weight whist retaining the strength.

Vegetation is removed from aqueduct every 2 to 3 years using abseiling equipment. Increased light to the understory has led to regrowth of dog's mercury, a sign of ancient woodland.

Built 1795 to 1799, Outram was praised for achieving the "impractical". The higher adjacent railway viaduct took one year to build and was opened in 1865.

There has been a car park there in the past, but rocks block the entrance.

The plinth was donated by the Automobile Association and dates from 1986. It is dedicated to W Shelmerdine (1912-1982)and J E Shelmerdine (1916-1996).

Pfaffenstein sandstone tower, height 29 m, 123 steps, built in 1904.

From memory you could only go out at the top level.

Stage 1, the early years: strange desires to dress en femme, perhaps dabbling from time time

Stage 2, into adulthood: suppression of those desires

Stage 3, adulthood: realization these hidden desires aren't doing me any good by remaining hidden, but what to do?

Stage 4, later adulthood: taking first baby steps (buying first clothes; telling a close confidant; perhaps dipping my foot in the outside world)

Stage 5, early maturity: compiling complete outfits; meeting others of my persuasion; surviving going out in public; beginnings of acceptance

Stage 6, maturity: becoming and accepting myself

Stage7, now: embracing being an "older woman;" seeking people to interact with when out-and-about; IOW, what you see in these recent pics

It can be very interesting :-)

This is a picture from the 7th stage of the Tour of Britain taken as the riders were near the top of the Ditchling Beacon climb before descending to the finish on the coast at Brighton.

Despite all the effort from the cycle racers I thought the effort from this spectator outshone them. Clearly hubby was very worried his dear wife was about to be mown down by a pack of cyclists. She didn’t get in the way of most of my pictures as she was forced to retreat quite often.

The picture was taken handheld with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20mm zoom at 10mm. The image was adjusted in Topaz lens effects to add a zoom blur. The zoom centre was fixed on the cyclists face. The effect was applied on a duplicate layer and a layer mask. A brush was then used to exclude more of the cyclist and the spectator lady from the effect and make them stand out.

I cycled to and from home for the event with camera in a pannier which came to 89 miles making it one of my longer bike rides of the year.

I am looking forward now to London Open House over this weekend. Targets for Saturday are City Hall, Lloyds of London, 55 Baker Street and the Foreign and Commenwealth Office. The highlights for Sunday are 2 premises I had to pre-book, The Channel 4 building and the new student building at the London School of Economics. Unfortunately I will not be able to process any of these for a while as I will be away from next week on a cycle tour (with camera) of the Midi area of the south of France including the ancient and spectacular fortress of Carcassonne. Lot of processing to do in October!

Werneth Lowe Country Park.

The memorial is more than just the stone obelisk. The land around, some 154 acres was also acquired in memory of the fallen and for the resort and recreation of the inhabitants of Hyde.

The Werneth Low memorial was unveiled on 25 June, 1921, in front of a crowd of 15,000 people.

I was pleased I managed to find the name.

From Wilipedia information ... Carl Gottlob Jäckel (1803–1882) pioneered tourism in the Pfaffenstein. His good local knowledge made him a trusted tour guide and the locals referred to him as the "Mountain Spirit of the Pfaffenstein" This crag was named in his honour.

The three arched aqueduct is the tallest in England. It carries the Peak Forest canal over the River Goyt.

Work on the Peak Forest canal - it was designed to carry Limestone - started in 1794 and the canal opened in 1800. The Marple locks were completed in 1804.

The canal fell into disrepair and local volunteers started to restore in in the 1960's, it reopened in 1974.

It is very scenic and forms part of the Cheshire Cruising Ring.

For lots more information see www.marple.website/canals-and-waterways/marple-aqueduct-b... (the Bicentenary was in 2000), including "The Grand Aqueduct, as it became known, measures 309 feet in width and towers 100 feet above the River Goyt at its central point. Marple Viaduct and AqueductThe whole structure contains 8,000 cubic yards of masonry. The shoulders of the arches are pierced with hollow cylinders to lessen the weight bearing down on the piers, which are oval in section and constructed of rough red sandstone. The upper section is mainly of white hewn and dressed stone, whilst a contrasting coloured grit-stone, used for the parapet and ledges, adds an artistic touch. The water channel was originally brick faced with a clay puddle backing but the major repairs in the 60's replaced this with concrete."

The higher structure behind Dennis is the railway viaduct.

Lead riders come round the roundabout at Wherstead and enter Ipswich. I believe the guy in the middle in red with the orange shoe was the stage winner.

Once up the steps and ladders I went for an explore - this is the view from on of the tops of the Pfaffenstein - it was quite tricky to make progress and there was a metal bridge across two of the bumps - that I might not have used had I seen it from below first.

These vats were used for dyeing cotton.

They were opened in 1805 by Samuel Matley, the closed in 1913 and were reopened in 1987 - presumably in the current form.
