My girlfriend and I headed down to Texas over Thanksgiving to spend time with her family (she's based in NYC). We took the opportunity to make a quick trip down to San Antonio and Austin.

I'd been meaning to go back to Austin for a while, having briefly visited in 2009 when running one of the Stackoverflow DevDays conferences for Joel Spolsky and having seen many of Trey Ratcliff's shots from the area, decided to go and investigate the Pennybacker Bridge out towards Austin's Hill Country. We were rewarded with a wonderful view of the setting sun and the trails of the passing traffic on the bridge below.

I'll definitely be spending more time in Austin on future trips, it's one of those rare (at least for me)* places that makes you think 'I could actually live here for a while'...

* that's not actually a negative thing! I love the majority of locations I visit but really don't like to sit still - the thought of settling in most places just isn't appealing.

I've been following the twitter image encoding contest on StackOverflow. The goal was to find the best algorithm to fit an image into 140 characters on Twitter.

stackoverflow.com/questions/891643/twitter-image-encoding...

The contest was inspired by Quasimondo's MonaTweeta II image:

www.flickr.com/photos/quasimondo/3518306770/

Although my compression algorithm didn't pan out, I was able to adapt the program to generate these images based on sampling a spiral of points from a source image.

The graph represents a network of 256 Twitter users whose recent tweets contained "d3js", taken from a data set limited to a maximum of 1,500 users. The network was obtained on Sunday, 02 June 2013 at 15:43 UTC. There is an edge for each follows relationship. There is an edge for each "replies-to" relationship in a tweet. There is an edge for each "mentions" relationship in a tweet. There is a self-loop edge for each tweet that is not a "replies-to" or "mentions". The tweets were made over the 6-day, 22-hour, 12-minute period from Sunday, 26 May 2013 at 13:47 UTC to Sunday, 02 June 2013 at 12:00 UTC.

The graph is directed.

The graph's vertices were grouped by cluster using the Clauset-Newman-Moore cluster algorithm.

The graph was laid out using the Harel-Koren Fast Multiscale layout algorithm.

The edge colors are based on relationship values. The edge widths are based on edge weight values. The edge opacities are based on edge weight values. The vertex sizes are based on followers values. The vertex opacities are based on followers values.

This is a per-server drill-down view of the Stack Overflow database server. Here we can see CPU, Memory and network trends to spot any issues.

processing+hpDraftmaster1+ballpointpen 20x20cm

fragment of source code in contest by stack overflow.com

poor light or camera man ;p

Close up shot of the inside of our clothes washer showing two of several points where the enamel is damaged and the drum is rusting. This apparently is the source of rust colored stains on towels accidentally left in the washer for a day. The real question is what, if anything, can be done to repair the enamel short of replaceing a washer that is otherwise quite functional?

This photo is illustrating this question at the Home Improvement stackoverflow site.

Stack Overflow: the Blind Leading the Blind

"... a working template that they could use to base Stack Overflow on: Usenet. Usenet has been around for almost 30 years now, and newsgroups like comp.lang.c++ are still active and full of experts discussing a wide variety of topics. But no, Jeff and Joel would rather make an Ajaxy shithole with no reason to draw true experts in. ..."

It's not great to see an example of the Nerd bully at work. Anonymous, negative and probably wrong.

This is a bogus article. Why? Well firstly you can't gauge the writer? Who has written this? They have an opinion but everyone has opinions. So what is the meat of the writers idea:

"Usenet is an active hive of technical

users who know all the right answers"

Usenet is an example of a broken model. Sure you can ask a question and get an answer. You might get 50. So how do you work out who's is right and the best? Force of personality? Discussion? By the time you have followed this discussion the noise/sig has diluted the answer possibly for the person who asked the question. What about others who ask the same question 5 years down the line? Where is the knowledge trapped? How are the experts identified? What you get is a unfocused threaded discussion arguing the merits of proposed solutions punctuated by the random Star Trek pun or maybe a lame Simpsons joke.

The ideas behind Stack Overflow are worth looking at. Forget who is doing it. Don't like Joel or Atwood, Fine. But finding answers to specific questions, finding good answers, evaluating responders and filtering the best results and preserving them is a worthy idea. The filtering of information and building the reputations of users who contribute is proving to be a real problem. Something to look at a bit closer.

The questions and answers might be crap at the moment. But maintaining that an archaic system is the best way to do things is making a statement about the writer.

*"... How about figuring it out by reading the answers and analyzing them? Using my brain to critically assess what people tell me has always worked for me ..."*

Sure you can. But is there a better way? Can your way scale? Will your brainpower & intelligence be recorded and replayed for others?

some time later ...

"... How about figuring it out by reading the answers and analyzing them? Using my brain to critically assess what people tell me has always worked for me ..."

Sure you can. But is there a better way? Can your way scale? Will your brainpower & intelligence be recorded and replayed for others?

Look at it another way. Would you take this approach to evaluating other types of information, links for example? Would you make a list of all the good websites and organising them for others to read? Or would you organise links utilising computers, software & inferred information form humans to do the same thing.

Yahoo vs Google?

a bit later...

"... Anyway, enough with that kind of meanness. I know from doing thousands of code reviews in my career that there is no developer who codes things perfectly even 80% of the time. Lighten up and stop judging people. ..."

Good point. The telling point wrt StackOverflow I've been learning listening to the development converstations ~ blog.stackoverflow.com/2008/08/podcast-17/ , then watching how the problems are solve and watching the results. Talk alone is rather hollow.

Another thrift store find from the other day. These two kitchen towels, or table runners, or very large napkins!, measure 36 by 15 1/8 inches. The short ends are machine stitched with a small hem. The long edges are selvages, meaning that the fabric was woven on a loom only that wide. I believe that these are Irish linen, at least 50 years old. Traditionally, housewives bought a length of such fabric and hemmed towels, as needed. My cost? 50 cents.

Thanks for the credit to "source" with a click-through on the blog "stackoverflow" about photo techniques.

Attended Stack Overflow Dev Days yesterday and in amongst the schwag I grabbed a Stack Overflow sticker for my Macbook.

I'm using Console2 in the foreground there. It has nice features like hiding the scrollbar/menubar chrome, and transparency.

And of course that's Tweetdeck in the background. So I can keep watching realtime feeds while my scripts run.

Went for a walk around the neighborhood tonight while listening to Joel and Jeff's podcast (go download it now if your IQ has at least 3 digits). Didn't come across anything too interesting, so I snapped this shot of an Austin bus on Manchaca road close to where I live.

I'm webmaster for the Cambridge Concert Orchestra and there were loads of updates overdue, including the current list of music we should all have in our pads. I got in a tis about how to write Dvořák in HTML but 'tis all done now. Phew.
