At the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, the seals of American Trail are ready to splash down and make their big debut ! To help the seals acclimate to their new surroundings, animal care staff added 24,000 pounds of salt to the 125,000 gallon pool last week. Yesterday, three gray seals—Gunther, Kara and Kjya—and two harbor seals—Luke and Squeegee—entered the water together for the first time and explored their new digs. Visitors can view the seals up close and watch training and feeding demonstrations at 11:15 a.m. and 2 p.m. every day. The Zoo’s elderly gray seal, Selkie, is expected to join the other seals in the coming weeks. To follow the latest updates, follow the Zoo on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #PinnipedParty.

There is a seven acre parcel of land at the South-West corner of Cherry Street and Lakeshor Boulevard, at the mouth of the Don River, in Toronto. This parcel was centred around two large complexes of grain elevators. But in the 1970s the leaseholder abandoned the property.
Unknown to its neighbour a community of squatters started to live there. At a certain point adventurous squatters scaled one elevator and painted a 20-30 meter mural of a rooster on the side one elevator.
When Toronto was an applicant for the 2008 Olympics the site was to be part of the Athlete's village. The grain elevators were to be demolished.
It is cool to watch building implode on TV. In this particular case the owners didn't warn the neighbours. The explosions were scheduled for 8am on Sunday mornings.
Advocates for the homeless hosted a dinner, and invited us neighbours to meet our homeless neighbours.
Touring the site was extremely interesting. But i didn't have a camera. Several dozen homeless people were living there -- mainly young -- mainly supporting themselves by squeegeeing commuters car windows on the nearby expressway on-ramps.
Eventually ahundred or more homeless people set up a tent city on the site -- lived there for several years. The site then provided considerable privacy because after decades the site had become overgrown with scrubs and small trees.
One day a combined force of Police, private security guards and construction workers secured the squatters, and bulldozed the vegetation. A surprising amount has grown back in the last half dozen or so years.
Ironically, the developers of the site who kicked out the homeless? Home Depot.

It's probably hard to tell here, but there are a lot of inconsistencies with the printing. These are 4 attempts. Some are blurry, some don't have enough ink. I'm challenged by the fact that my squeegee is 3" smaller than the width of my screen so I have to make multiple passes. Any advice from seasoned printers?

This boat ended up heading right for a larger vessel that was heading into the inlet as it was heading out. Although I'm sure they cleared by quite some distance, visually from shore it sure didn't look that way!
Today has been an interesting day. It started with my little migraine alert cat, Squeegee, squeaking mercilessly to get my attention about a half an hour before I wanted to get up! I didn't realize what was happening because the pain hadn't settled in yet, and I just told Squeeks to shut up! (Poor baby!) Right before my clock went off, I got out of bed with the headache setting in, and I took my meds and did some pressure point stuff that Doc Hogan told me about that really does help. Squeeks looked on, staring at me the whole time, as if to say, "well, I TRIED to warn you, ya' numbnut!" I went back to bed for about 15 minutes and felt better when I got out the second time.
Last night I thought I was coming down with something. My sinuses were going nuts, but actually, it was probably only a pre-migraine response, because I was fine this morning once it cleared after the ibuprofen kicked in. I should have known. I was ditsy for two days!
At work, I had a sale right off the bat, which was good, as it was a floor model and I needed the space. I had to help lug the thing out to the girl's car, but luckily it wasn't a heavy one. Then the delivery guys showed up with some beds I'd been wanting, and actually took some out to get the new ones in! Yay!
I've been trying to determine which of the beds I wanted to buy, as I really need a new one. Suddenly, there were three new ones I hadn't tried, but only one felt good enough to really consider. I think I still like the Sealy Optimum Elation. It's got a great feel, and won't be too much of a stretch for me to pay for soon. So, (I think) I've finally made a decision. (Yay again!) I'll try a couple more times to make sure, but it's a great bed- cool to the touch, and has less push back than most memory foams do, which feels better to me now. I finally feel like I'm getting somewhere!
Maybe with a little better rest, I might feel like getting out for some good shoots once the hurricanes and T-storms stop threatening! Till then, I'm just going to keep editing what I already have. It's starting to get boring, but I've been pleased with some of the pics once I worked on them. Next time, landscape- not portrait. Duh.
Squeegee and Tigger have been the best of friends since Tigger came to live with us. Here Squeegee, on the left, is instigating with Tigger, but it doesn't have the same effect that it does when he goes at Barrymore! More-More sees himself as the dominant one, and views Squeegee beneath him, and Tigger as a threat! Still, they all get along pretty well as long as I show them each enough attention.
I took this shot today during a gloomy day, wanting to get out and try my new Canon 40D, but the weather didn't permit. The kitties had to be my models today!
A spin off from the what's in your bag, all the items that have accumulated in my boot.
Starting top left:
•Next Deck and Grip
•Towel and Squeegee (for drying up skateparks)
•Camera Bags and Filmer-Handle (Get the big bag out if I think I will need more lenses but the little one for just one, normally 50mm)
•Current and Previous Deck (keep the previous just incase I break my board)
•Tin with Spares and Old Wheels
•Spare Brake-Pads (when I got them changed last found out the front left brake was sticking so kept the good old ones just in case)
•Old Shoes (when my Vans died tried out a few different shoes kept a couple in-case I change my mind)
•Helmet (for if I go to a park where they are required or vert)

Home Depot.

Backyard of 33 Baldwin St, Toronto, aka Ragnarokr, circa 1972-3. Your humble narrator sucking on what looks like a squeegee that I pray was clean.
Scanned from an old print.
Don’t know who the gentleman on the left is, perhaps Chris Risk? Frank Tettemer? My dad in hard hat, and my uncle Phil on the right, Chris Risk on the left.
and of course, like all places, this area sure has changed:

BALDWIN STREET VILLAGE
In contrast to areas like Yorkville or Little Italy, Baldwin Street Village breathes an air of bohemian sophistication. This culturally diverse area has seen Irish, Jewish, Portuguese, Italian and Chinese communities make their homes here. The end result of the area’s rich history is an eclectic mixture of people, cuisines and shops. You’ll find French, Italian, Japanese, Thai, Indian, Chinese, Malaysian, and Vegetarian food. Lunchtime sees a rush of suits from nearby offices, while the afternoon lull gives off a siesta vibe that can be felt along the whole street. When the sun begins to sink, twinkling lights float romantically in the canopies above enhancing the intimacy of the setting. The sound of cutlery clinking on the plates begins again, and the street remains a private, delightful entity all its own.
Itinerary
• Traditional Japanese cuisine at Kon-nichi-wa (31 Baldwin St.) or Fujiyama (49 Baldwin St.), Indian at Jodhpore Club (33 Baldwin St.), or Italian at Café Tuscany (45 Baldwin St.). Or grab a Chinese pastry at the Yung Sing Pastry Shop (22 Baldwin St.), and sit on the bench and ponder what else you’re going to eat.
• Chada Import Gallery (25 Baldwin St.) is crammed with exotica from around the world including jewellery, furniture, clothes and knick-knacks. Music of all kinds including albums (remember those?) are at Around Again (18 Baldwin St.).
• A margarita at Margarita’s (14 Baldwin St.) is a great way to unwind. Finish off your day with an intimate dinner. Classical French can be found at Bodega (30 Baldwin St.) and Café la Gaffe (24 Baldwin St.), or if you have Malaysia on your mind, the Mata Hari Grill (39 Baldwin St.) will take you there.
Yung Sing Pastry was there in the 70s, but not much else.

Fiberglass was applied to protect the marine plywood from the elements since Okoume has little resistance to rot. First, I glued on full length strips of wood to the port/starboard and aft edge(s) . These strips were carefully sanded and worked to ensure I had square edges and fair cures especially on the side edges. I didn't put a strip on the front edge as it was cut very cleanly by the router attached to a pivoting arm. Screw holes from the top sheet temporary clamping process were filled and the entire top was sanded. I continue my practice of working plywood structures to create a fair surface. My hope is that after fiberglass or Xynole is applied I only have to fill the fabric's texture and then the job is done as there should be no high or low spots in the underlying structure.
So, I positioned the two 6' wide pieces of 6oz fiberglass on the top with the seam running port to starboard across the 7' width for easier access in fairing. I then trimmed the glass to a rough dimension. The fiberglass was removed and next I squeeged on a thin coat of Raka epoxy. I forced the epoxy into the plywood and let it cure for a brief period. The expectation is that the wood is somewhat sealed and the epoxy is applied too thin for air filled bubbles to form from warming wood. Hopefully this thin epoxy coat will later reduce the plywood from sucking the epoxy out of the fiberglass. I then put the fiberglass back in place and smoothed it out which was easy to do with its 6oz weight.
I squeeged epoxy into the fiberglass weave which saturated the fiberglass so easily and I didn't have to cut darts in the corners to wrap the edges. With the epoxy applied, I standback and admire my work and think I'm getting quite good at this boatbuilding stuff and perhaps need elevation from my self proclaimed status as a "novice" boatbuilder.
I continue to check the epoxy for tackiness so I can apply a coat of unthickened epoxy to flood the fiberglass weave. The epoxy is not getting tacky and I notice that it seems to have an unusually thin viscosity. Oh well, it is rather cool that day and severe thunderstorms are in the area thus I conclude the temperature and perhaps dampness are impeding the epoxy kicking off.
Three hours later I conclude something is not right and I start thinking through what is going on. I glance at the part A and part B Raka epoxy jugs. After applying the thin sealing coat of epoxy, in haste I brought two jugs from the workshop to the garage to be near the top when flooding the fiberglass. One jug is yellow which means hardener and one jug is white or clear which means resin. I turn the "resin" jug around so the label is visible and the mystery is solved.
For the first time, I notice that the Raka 610 Fast hardener is a light yellow color instead of the more pronounced yellow colors of other Raka hardeners. I laminated on the fiberglass by mixing together 610 fast and 350 non-blush hardeners and no resin. I had just committed the biggest mistake in my four years of boat building. Prior to this mistake, I had sucessfully mixed over 30 gallons of epoxy. When I was pumping the fast hardener thinking it was resin, I noticed how easily it pumped thus this should should have set off alarms and investigation. I screwed up big time on this near 7' by 11' structure.
After the perfunctory string of creative profanity, I calmed down and considered two courses of action. 1.) pull off and trash the fiberglass and clean the hardener residue with warm water which I understand will remove hardener and start all over again or 2.) apply resin only to the fiberglass and vigorously work it with a squeege into the hardener saturated fiberglass. I choose the later course and found that the epoxy quickly started getting tacky (after all I was using a fast hardener) and after letting it harden further, the fiberglass appeared somewhat bonded to the plywood. Had the fiberglass been heavier than 6oz I wouldn't have attempted to "mix" in resin via a squeegee. Next, I flooded the fiberglass with a properly mixed coat of un-thickened epoxy to fill the weave. . I must admit that the curiosity of whether the epoxy could be saved was the primary driver of my repair strategy.
A day later the roof has a hard epoxy coating that appears normal though I can't attest to what is going on under this thin top coat. Some of the glass that is wrapped around the edges is still squishy as I suspect I didn't force enough resin into the hardener laden glass during my repair. Today's 62 degree temps are not conducive to determining whether additional curing time will toughen these edges.
Certainly the epoxy in my repair is not mixed to its prescribed 2:1 ratio thus I suspect that the epoxy will not obtain its rated strength. However, a future failure with this epoxy on the roof top will be a non-structural issue assuming I repair before water reaches the plywood. No use asking for advice on the longevity of my repair as I assume that nobody, but nobody in the history of the world has matched my carelessness and replicated my squeegee epoxy mixing strategy. Tonight I expect a call from Darwin.
In the absence of conclusive evidence that the fiberglass will delaminate, I will eventually apply a very thin coating of fairing compound, sand, repeat if necessary and then spray a 2 part epoxy primer and then Awlcraft 2000 paint.
I have abandoned my thought of removing the title "novice" from my boat building resume.
***Edit 04/08/2013- After letting the epoxy cure for four days, I dug through the top coat of cured epoxy and tested a 2"x2" area of the 6oz fiberglass for adhesion to the plywood. It wasn't adhering nor was the rest of the glass. With ease, I ripped the entire 7'x11' fiberglass sheet off. The residue is a sticky goo that has wicked into the plywood. Progress being made with chemicals, scrapers and sanders in my quest to get back to bare plywood. Once there, I will start over again assuming my brain isn't permanently atrophied from the clean up.
Don't screw up epoxy mixing as doing so is like breaking a mirror ....there is no repair.

Home Depot.

The simple equipment and chemicals used to develop black and white negatives. The fixer is in a large bulk container and I draw off 60cc into the beaker before topping up to 300cc from the tap. I use a 1litre glass jug to mix water at 20°C from the mixer tap for chemical mixing and washing water. Also, not shown here, is a small stop watch for timing the process.
Note the digital thermometer and squeegee tongs in the clear beaker. I use that one for pre-soak and final rinse with the wetting agent. I use a small syringe to measure the 1.5cc required.
The labels on the beakers are to prevent mistaking the chemicals. I did that once in 1968 and have used labels ever since.
The Patterson tank is from 1971, the nylon beakers are from the 1940s the perspex one from 1993, and I first used that pop bottle for Microphen in 1975.

Times Square, New York, NY
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Times_Square
www.earthcam.com/usa/newyork/timessquare/
History
Before and after the American Revolution, the area belonged to John Morin Scott, a general of the New York militia where he served under George Washington. Scott's Manor House was at what is now 43rd Street, surrounded by countryside used for farming and breeding horses. In the first half of the 19th century it became one of the prized possessions of John Jacob Astor, who made a second fortune selling off lots to hotels and other real estate concerns as the city rapidly spread uptown.[2]
In 1904, New York Times publisher Adolph S. Ochs moved the newspaper's operations to a new skyscraper on 42nd Street at Longacre Square. Ochs persuaded Mayor George B. McClellan, Jr. to construct a subway station there, and the area was renamed "Times Square" on April 8, 1904. Just three weeks later, the first electrified advertisement appeared on the side of a bank at the corner of 46th Street and Broadway.[3]
The New York Times, according to Nolan, moved to more spacious offices across Broadway in 1913. The old Times Building was later named the Allied Chemical Building. Now known simply as One Times Square, it is famed for the Times Square Ball drop on its roof every New Year's Eve.
Also in 1913, the Lincoln Highway Association, headed by entrepreneur Carl G. Fisher, chose the intersection of 42nd Street and Broadway, at the southeast corner of Times Square, to be the Eastern Terminus of the Lincoln Highway, the first road across America, which originally spanned 3,389 miles (5,454 km) coast-to-coast through 13 states to its Western Terminus in Lincoln Park in San Francisco, California.[4][5]
As the growth in New York City continued, Times Square quickly became a cultural hub full of theatres, music halls, and upscale hotels.
Times Square quickly became New York's agora, a place to gather to await great tidings and to celebrate them, whether a World Series or a presidential election
—James Traub, The Devil's Playground: A Century of Pleasure and Profit in Times Square
Celebrities such as Irving Berlin, Fred Astaire, and Charlie Chaplin were closely associated with Times Square in the 1910s and 1920s. During this period, the area was nicknamed The Tenderloin[6] because it was supposedly the most desirable location in Manhattan. However, it was during this period that the area was besieged by crime and corruption, in the form of gambling and prostitution; one case that garnered huge attention was the arrest and subsequent execution of police officer Charles Becker.[7]
The general atmosphere changed with the onset of the Great Depression in the 1930s. Times Square acquired a reputation as a dangerous neighbourhood in the following decades. From the 1960s to the early 1990s, the seediness of the area, especially due its go go bars, sex shops, and adult theatres, became an infamous symbol of the city's decline.[8]
In the 1980s, a commercial building boom began in the western parts of the Midtown as part of a long-term development plan developed under Mayor Ed Koch and David Dinkins. In the mid-1990s, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani (1994–2002) led an effort to "clean up" the area, increasing security, driving out pornographic theatres, drug dealers and "squeegee men", and opening more tourist-friendly attractions and upscale establishments. Advocates of the remodelling claim that the neighbourhood is safer and cleaner. Detractors, on the other hand, argue that the changes have diluted or "Disneyfied" the character of Times Square and have unfairly targeted lower income New Yorkers from nearby neighbourhoods such as Hell's Kitchen.[citation needed]
In 1990, the state of New York took possession of six of the nine historic theatres on 42nd Street, and the New 42nd Street nonprofit organization was appointed to oversee their restoration and maintenance. The theatres were renovated for Broadway shows, converted for commercial purposes, or demolished.

This car wash in support of the girls' basketball team at a Kelowna Christian school caught our attention. Jamica were glad to indulge our laziness and join the line of vehicles being washed.
For this portrait of Squeeks, I made it black and white, and then converted only Squeegee to sepia, which kept the orange cat appearance, but took out all of the extra colors that I didn't want. I liked the effect with the high key exposure.
My oldest kitty, Squeegee is in the beginning stages of kidney failure, which, unfortunately, he's been through before when he was much younger. He pulled through then, but at nearly 18, Squeegee is nearing the end of his years. He's on appetite stimulants now to keep his weight up, since the vet said that was one of the reasons cats with kidney disease go down- they get weak and don't have the strength to hang on. So far, so good, because Squeegee is eating like there's no tomorrow!
The dental nightmares are still continuing, my friends. Right now I'm re-packed for pain, and have formed a dry socket where the extraction was. Not a lot of fun. I will be doing mindless things for a while, as I just am having trouble concentrating on stuff right now. Hopefully it will clear up soon and I'll be back on more.
